THANK YOU, DR. SNIPES! I think you may have guided me to finding my healing. After decades of therapy, where CBT helped me make rational decisions, I've still experienced physical symptoms that I've described to people "It's like my body is in permanent lock down, it's ALWAYS wired, even when I'm outwardly relaxed and happy. Could the childhood trauma of 60 years ago still be in my body?" And then I saw your title, and that is the first time that I've ever even had someone validate the possibility of chronic embodied trauma. I look forward to watching your videos, and look forward to getting clues that might help find an appropriate professional I can directly work with.
Thank you for sharing your own personal experience with trauma and how you’ve managed it. Many lecturers can come across as a tad condescending and paternalistic but you’ve detailed some very helpful and empowering strategies here. People might also find it useful to look at the enteric nervous system and how this relates to trauma-related anxiety. It’s essentially a second brain in the gut. See also gut-brain axis. Totally agree with your advice: i) to do yoga. Been doing Iyengar for years and it works. Journaling might also be useful for some people as it’s an easy way to review your progress and identify who your triggers are. ii) definitely yes to finding opportunities to laugh/sing if at all possible. That might well sound impossible for some who find themselves “locked-in” to ruminations about their traumatic event/incident. Everyone is different but it’s vital to give yourself a break even if it’s only momentarily.
Interesting. I have found practicing Qi Gong to be helpful. I may start exploring yoga. I also sing, and play music - during a time of deep grief, I found playing music deeply therapeutic. I am addicted to humour, a good laugh at some impromptu joke does wonders. ,
12:00- Also, breathing techniques such as Wim Hof style breathwork has been one of the most healing modalities for happiness, health, and strength for me.
I didn't get on with the Wim Hof breath - not because it wasn't effective, but because the sensation of activating the stress response was not something I could push myself to do every day - despite the benefits I felt after. Years of being in a severely hypervigilant state led me towards more gentle methods. The cold showers, however... I started them again a couple of weeks ago, starting with hot water and then turning it to cold. Now I look forward to having a full shower starting with cold. It's the weirdest thing. Initially I had to mentally prepare for it, then realised the sensation was exactly the same as the excitement of being dared to run under a waterfall when travelling, and so I began to dare myself and laugh in anticipation of my response. But I agree, Wim Hof's techniques are very transformative!
I cannot thank you enough, you have no doubt saved lives doing this work! What you're doing is the healing of humanity. Everyone who watches your videos gains understanding and skills that they share with others, and it ripples out through society. Just, Thank you.
@@chaznonya4 FWIW something that worked for me during the worst life storms was saying to myself ‘in this moment I am safe’ or end with OK. Another is ‘evevn if it’s not OK it will be OK.’ Sml but with some focused breathing and closed eyes it helped. Also if needed find a bathroom and sit for few min alone to do them. With time you can do it in crowded areas. When we get through tougher times or memories it leaves us stronger and with more self respect and awareness. Life is hard and you’re not alone by far.✌️
I have cptsd I’ve been going to therapy for a while now. I started watching your channel abt two weeks ago and you have been extremely helpful. More helpful than my therapist. Please continue making content on mental health. It’s just as important as physical health. You’re amazing and we appreciate your help 🫶
Wow....I love your strength to share your past trauma. I noted in other of your older videos that your body is still dealing with trapped old emotions. You do really good work helping others with your knowledge and own troubleshooting experience. Thank you!!
I hope you know how much you help people with your expertise and how well you convey the information. It’s life changing. Learning to be in charge of my thoughts n reactions is empowering. Thank you. 🌻
Awesome video. I shake sometimes lately and wonder why. I'm under a lot of stress lately. Both my husband and i lost our jobs from the pandemic. My brother and father in law died from covid. I try to be positive. Thank you. God bless you.
It is a traumatic event for you hun. I am the same for the past year. Went to emergency rooms countless times. I just started a treatment for this panic/anxiety and hopefully I am recovering because it’s been hell.
This was so good! I learned a lot of these techniques and incorporated them very effectively for decades but oh my my my how I need them now. Thanks a MILLION for the reminder! You have helped me on my healing journey.
Very Useful Information. Just send this to My Sister. She will faint if She get in Pain. Or if she smells something that's not good. Thanks again. She's been having this for years.
Thank you for your 3 part series on the vagus nerve and its role in anxiety and stress. I had been using many of the techniques you suggest and they have been very helpful. Thankfully, I am no longer in the situations that caused my anxiety issues and my lifestyle is generally very peaceful and I am healthy. But I still have occasional flashbacks or experience generalized anxiety - like fear of experiencing pain/anxiety as opposed to actually experiencing it. So, that is where your information has helped me. Now I understand precisely why these techniques are important and helpful with past stressors and reprogramming my responses. I am very grateful🙏🏼

Everything you have said I have been doing for myself for years! Hi exciting! I’m much closer than I thought!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗💜💜💜🙏💜🙏💜🙏
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your channel has helped me become more self aware and feeling like there is hope with your tips and words of encouragement.
Great Videos Doc Snipes. Asa 72 YO, Male, now retired, I have been anxious person for as long as I can remember. Starting with nail biting at age 7 or so, which evolved into anticipatory anxiety (like looking at my watch as e approached the end of the school day - in the 3rd Grade), and then evolved into full blown Panic/Anxiety Attacks circa 1986 (after the birth of our second child). A few years before (while my wife was pregnant with our first child in 1982) I started to experience "heart Palpitations" / Stomach issues of Burping . etc.. After a series of tests were done including a GI series of the gut, nothing negative was found. When I asked my doctor - "What's the Story, Doc? He responded "Aren't you the fellow buying a house? . I said, No Doc, my wife is Pregnant!. he said.....That's Your problem !! Meaning, It's Your Nerves affecting your Stomach / Heart. He didn't talk about the Vagus Nerve. But the recent surfacing of the vast importance of the Vagus Nerve is fascinating and allows me to understand what is happening. I have had "traumas" in my childhood, too numerous to mention / dicuss here, but watcjhing this and other Psych vidoes helps me to more fully understand the impact of those traumas on my Well Being via the Vagus Nerve!
Thank you, I just found few of your you tube clip, regardless of watching and taking many courses, I could not understand before in a way that you taught it, you have a very special niche around these subjects, keep up with your amazing educational programs
Too much responsibility stresses me out! I can see that now. I maybe could get back into where I was as a child (I have some very good memories) and not have to save the world, just enjoy myself and learn what I like to learn with someone helping me. I can let them worry about everything else, or let it take care of itself, knowing (somehow) it will take care of itself..
It's awesome that we are on the same wavelength.....some of the answers you've explained has been the same words outta my mouth..lol...for me it's a natural feeling that iam surprised not everyone has.... Your my new fav...😇....very interesting knowledge of understanding you behold grasshopper.....look forward to more of your presentations....👍
It is really nice to be able to have these videos tonight rather than going over election results.. I think the main thing for me is to be able to validate how important it is for me to be able to relax..
Stay blessed. I appreciate you watching the video. What did you find most useful from it? Other videos you might be interested in can be found at ru-vid.comsearch?query=trauma
Thank you very much for these wonderful videos. I very much appreciate them. God bless you for being so generous and sharing your knowledge for free to all people. 🙏
Great video! I wonder how many people smoke to control stress. It creates a break and slows down the breathing. It's much healthier to identify alternative ways to do the breath work. Great video.
I managed to heal myself from horrific child abuse without the use of torturing animals. What is wrong with people, I find it utterly sickening that people who are allegedly healers relish torturing small furry animals. Just go to Brad Yates for emotional freedom technique EFT. He is a brilliant and generous and emotional freedom technique practitioner was over 600 videos to heal anything from emotional pain/anxiety, grief, shame and everything else without inflicting unnecessary, unscientific torture on innocent sentient beings. If we torture our own pets with gratuitous violence, we are imprisoned.. Why are there different rules for scientists in labs with white coats, behind closed doors inflicting horrific suffering. Sick 🤢
It's like a group trance, to collectively ignore this. I appreciate the information we have learned - but I don't believe it's worth the price. If every one of us had to spend time in the rooms where these things are happening, I suspect most people would feel the same, that it's not worth it.
@@SpectrumOfChange Absolutely and if we had to kill our own steak we and our pets would be eating lentils. Christmas is a huge animal sacrifice it is horrific! The human race is hardly evolving at all in fact mostly devolving! So sad for the animals.
When is the last time you truly allowed someone to embrace you totally and in return done the same...the truth my shock most of you because there is something very specific that has to happen and happens in return that allows truma to be released very few ever truly let go out of fear or embarrassment ... Real connection is rare and powerful.
Doc Snipes, I have been monitoring heart rate dip during sleep, that is some how connected to vagus nerve and circadian rhythm. It occurs for about 20 minutes for me between 5am and 6:30am. I also monitor HRV with elite app to see parasympathetic and sympathetic balance. Can you make an educational video addressing these areas? There is no one in my area, that is into any of these things, that I can go to. Thanks
I have no idea what happend tonight, but it felt like some trapped tension got released from my body and I've never been more present. I can feel at peace.. hard to explain.
I m gaining so much invaluable help from your videos.,having been through acute burnout that urged me to take the very huge decision of quitting my job, though I continued in the afternoons ,as I cdnt cope with mornings ,to work privately. I'm still struggling and wondering if I'm ever going to recover from my layers of trauma before I die .
I wake up with stress at the moment due to my situation -- so I am going to start earlier on the vagal tone work to start better and hope to have a better day and before bed too
Totally with you on the masks - different reason. I'm PTSD (c-ptsd,rather). Frontline healthcare "hero" (now zero) who was treating covaids just fine and effectively before it had a name, then the mask mandate happened and THAT was when my entire staff and I fell ill with severe illness, and that was just the beginning of a HORRID horrible journey (that bore fruit, indeed, due to my faith and pain to purpose and finding purpose in pain)...so when I see people walking around with the masks in fear, it reminds me of being neglected by the healthcare system. When I was in critical shape, and wasn't admitted because I refused the vent.....trauma sandwich. Thank you, good video
I have the same thing with masks and people’s intensity/fear and randomly attacking verbally and even physically for not wearing one. I’m thankful to honor my process and never wear one and still have to work through seeing people wearing them. Thx for sharing
It’s less about masks etc. They are symbols and tools for good and bad. Humanity’s biggest lesson is illusion of division fed for centuries and to respect freedom to choose (sovereignty) and think even/esp if we disagree. Compassion/cooperation vs judgement/competition. We share ~98-99% DNA and must learn to get along to survive. ✌️
Thank you so much. One question, I can barely even lightly touch my tragus, it's extremely painful. It's been that way for over a year now. No doctor seems to know why. Could be coming from jaw joint? Does anyone else out there have this problem? Wishing everyone a calm and happy vagus nerve!
SO, normally my husband would never go to anyone that didn't have a true drs. License or title and would insist that the professionals rendering services must accept Insurance. However after 2 years of suffering with intense neck pain and dizziness, and trying "everything" which included a series of shots, chiropractic visits and even 2 small surgeries, he sought the help of a kinesologist. She worked with muscles , which support bones and he felt relief after the first visit! He followed up with 2 more visits and is virtually pain free currently. Don't be afraid to stop outside of your comfort area as he did through ultimate desperation. Good luck! 👍
Can stress put a damper on my creativity? How do I work through having no creativity anymore? Is this about the inner child? I have yet to access the "Inner Child" stuff you linked me to so I will do that first. As long as I have no one pushing me, I can make my own decision and grow in my confidence and self and not just in knowledge.
Very helpful video, Dr Snipes! I'm currently in DBT but haven't as of yet anyway, learned or have been told of these techniques to calm the vagus nerve. I will definitely be implementing several of these. Oh, I grind my teeth too and awaiting my night guard ☺️
Try playing a French horn if you want get some deep breathing. One thing anyone can do isa buy a brass mouthpiece [trumpet, French horn, trombone, etc.] and put to lips and buzz lips to mouthpiece. It really stimulates a relaxation response, especially if you're highly anxious. The larger the mouthpiece,[trombone e.g.] the greater the relaxation response since it takes more deep breathing.
Thanks for watching and for recommending another tool for deep breathing. Other videos you might be interested in can be found at ru-vid.comsearch?query=trauma
@@DocSnipes was only asking because you sat in this video certain neurological conditions might effect benefit of these exercises. Were you thinking of something specific or generalizing?
Thank you for these very nice tips. Is the reason the intention of releasing trauma has to do with activating the vegal nerve/tone, because that is how someone can feel safe enough to release it? Thank you. I hope that made sense!
As someone with anxiety and panic attacks….I would always I would start to yawn repeatedly when one was coming on…like my body was trying to say something
Went to a an outpatient therapy years ago and took this test that told me my trauma level and all the negative things I could have likely done. It was interesting but not sure how they factored all that
I am sorry to hear that, but glad they were assessing for it I'm not sure what test they gave, but research has shown a correlation between certain issues and particular types of trauma. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eCo0sDFaauU.html Here is another if you are interested ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ndWSIkFLq-g.html
What if your HRV(cortisol) is always high, never recovers significantly, even worse at night unless I fast 24 hours or more. I do not feel stressed at all, eat healthy, exercise, watch these numbers closely, watch alcohol, etc, but no change. Started CBT and do have CPTS, but seems to be no rhyme, reason, supplement, breathing exercise, that does anything at all...except fasting/IF, but even then still have high levels at the beginning of the night. I get a bit of recovery about 3 am, if I do an evening fast. No doctor, naturopath, therapist etc has any insight. I'm about to say "screw it".
I’m curious as to how the tools for trigeminal nerve would work with someone who has trigeminal neuralgia. Is the vagus nerve connection and autonomic effects less with TN?
i have a lot of trauma stored in my body. PTSD so bad i wake up every 1-2 hours at night gasping. I also have a hiatal hernia so my stomach is pressing up against my vagus nerve. wouldn't this be an issue? I feel like my vagus nerve is overstimulated because of this. :(
Yes, that can add to the trauma and can interfere in the recovery process. Still, you can release trauma from your body. What tools from the video are you planning to use for that?
I'm a bit confused about the biology. Does the vagus nerve receive sensory stimulation directly from the external environment or does it respond to sensory information received from via the sense organs eg eyes, ears, smell etc. Is the vagus nerve a sensory organ or associated with introceptive function?
Hey there Doc Snipes, love your scientific approach to practical problems. Thanks for your work and sharing it here :) What do you think one of those EMS/TENS can do for you regarding releasing trauma?
Very interesting. Any comments ear piercings along the vegas nerve areas? I've heard people talking about the ear piercings affecting "chakras". But medically speaking any opinion on this?
Supplements and herbs might help in coping with trauma symptoms but, just like any other medication, they can cause sides effects (adverse reactions). That’s why I strongly advise you to talk to your doctor before taking any supplement, herb or medication.
My logical brain has always been able to override any physical stress responses, but after my trauma my primal brain and body won’t listen to logic. Super annoying and frustrating. 😐
While more rest can contribute to healing from trauma, it is not the sole solution. Trauma impacts both the body and the brain, causing a range of symptoms such as restlessness, exhaustion, and changes in eating habits. Improving sleep quality can help reduce these symptoms and contribute to the healing process. However, trauma recovery involves more than just physical rest. It requires a holistic approach that addresses both physical and psychological aspects. This can include activities that channel energy, such as doing something with your hands, to cope with restlessness. Feeling safer can reduce hypervigilance, restlessness, and exhaustion, which in turn can improve sleep quality. Nutrition also plays a crucial role in trauma recovery. Some individuals may eat to self-soothe, while others may lose their appetite due to stress. Working with a nutritionist or doctor to ensure adequate nutrient intake can support relaxation and overall well-being. Furthermore, recognizing and addressing the emotional and cognitive effects of trauma is essential. This can involve identifying triggers, using grounding techniques, and seeking support from a therapist or support group. In conclusion, while more rest can aid in trauma recovery, it is just one aspect of a comprehensive approach that includes physical, emotional, and cognitive strategies. It's important to seek professional help to navigate the complex process of healing from trauma.

Hi Doc Snipes, I am wondering is you might be able to help me in finding someone here in Tucson Az that is of the same thinking as you in this matter. I have been suffering since 2008 and have been to Psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, physical therapists and general practitioners. I have tried yoga, breathing, mindfulness exercises that have not helped to stop the stuck in the fight mode, the cPTSD or the hyper-sensitivity I suffer from. I am not physically able to exercise, walk or any other activities without triggering increased symptoms. I feel like I have an electrical current going through me all the time. I am on disability because I can’t function. This affects my mind also. Please help me!
You might want to try earthing/grounding for the electric current sensation. This includes walking or standing barefoot on the ground, using grounding devices, and also turn off Wifi at night (stay away from EMF) plus other things you can do... Just a suggestion..
Start taking RE MAG Magnesium by dr Carolyn Dean when you are in fight and flight it uses up a shed load of nutrition but especially Magnesium you should notice some definite help. Are you doing the vagal tone work?
Yes I am still doing the vagal massage and I am taking magnesium. No change in symptoms unfortunately. Have also tried PT and acupuncture with no changes.
