The Cheddite and Nobel-Sport primers are prone to piercing which is very bad for firing pin life so they should be avoided. 209 primers are not interchangeable in performance unlike your statement states. I have proven this by paying for ballistic testing.
This is a little off subject but I i saw one of the comments state that Fiocchi primers were a different size. I have a Beretta .410 687 EELL Diamond Pigeon that I purchased new. I cannot shoot Fiocchi ammo in it. You cannot close the breech after loading the shells. I sent the gun back to Beretta and they returned it to me with “no explanation”. Hows that for customer service. Anyway, the gun still will not close using Fiocchi 2 12 or 3”. I was getting some instruction from a World Champion trap shooter and one of his sponsors is Fiocchi. I told him about the issue and you could tell he didn’t really believe me. Towards the end of the session he said, “I have some Fiocchi shells back at the clubhouse, I am going to grab a couple boxes and see if they work”. He brought back a couple boxes, tried a few from each box and the gun would not close using any of them after which he said, “ I’ll be darned, I have never seen that before”. He said he would contact Fiocchi and see what they had to say and would get back with me. I never heard back. I guess $120/hr plus good tip doesn't warrant a response 🤣 Actually, he may have never heard back from them, who knows?
Thanks for pointing out that not all 209's are the same. I, too, have noticed this. It probably has something to do with metric to imperial conversion but European made 209 primers run just a whisker larger than American made 209's. Not a problem when using just one brand, but with things like they are right now, its something to be aware of. There is a "fix" for this, though. A "primer pocket uniformer" will return slightly large primer pockets to useable firmness.
I just changed my 600 jr mark 5 over. I had a 12ga I put the 410 3 inch kit on it. I must have something not ajusted wrong. I having trouble with resizing and not always knocking a primer out. On some of the hulls get stuck . I have tried Winchester, Federal, Remington Fiocchi all 3 inch.
I just ran across 2 1/2 bricks of old Federal #410 primers. These I guess where made for 410 with a lighter charge and lower pressures. Have you ever used them or heard of them? I want to use them for 12 gauge because of the shortage today.
I’m trying to make .410 slug loads, using the Svarog “pellet” slug mold. I get nice castings, but worry that they are .412 at the skirt and .249 oz.. I took apart some factory-made slug loads. Their slug was. .389” diameter, and .215 oz. The Brenneke slug was .406-.408 diameter and .237 oz. I was surprised to find the Herter’s slug load wad column is MOSTLY FILLER ...1.25 “ of the column. Those fly at about 1900-2000 fps for me, and are ACCURATE. I am trying to get my home-loads up to 2000 fps. I got 1144 fps with 12.1 grains.I now use 26 grains of LilGun, and got 1611 fps out of a revolver. I’m told I should get another 250 fps out of a long gun. I used “Cream of Wheat” as my filler. Any tips or warnings would be most welcome.
