I enjoyed the video. Taking us along through the entire process is actually really helpful for those of us just getting into reloading. It’s all about the process and careful diligence to creat each cartridge so the repetition is good.
I’m new to hand loading. Just bought some hornady by accident but decided to keep it and try to learn these skills. It seems almost peaceful to do this process. Now I just have to get all the equipment..
I have done extensive testing with 115 grain XTP's, and 1200 f/s to 1250 f/s is excellent for penetration with good expansion, even through 4 layers of denim. At around 1250 f/s your XTP's expand huge, but penetration start to suffer. Bottom line, keep the velocity between 1200 and 1250 and youve got an excellent SD round, comparing well with much newer technology. I love the 115 XTP's.
Hey, do you have any idea how the 115g does at 1150 f/s? I'm super new to reloading and decided it's best I stick to lower or stock from factory mixes for a good while. Reloaded 200 and chronographed about 40 rounds and atleast got consistent velocity results out of my Walther 4.5" PDP but I'm super curious how it would react in gel for expansion as well as depth. You seem like you did lots of nice testing with results you're confident with. Was curious if maybe you expiremented with a lower velocity on the rounds yourself with results..... If not I'll still take any ideas on how you think it would react 😊
Iam greatful for your post I was going to go COL1.068-but like your 1.075 and the speed that you got Iam useing tight group powder .Rem HTP out of the box 1.080. the short of it it is a good SD round.
If you get a Lee die and Powder measure, you can flare and drop powder at the same time. It is a huge time saver. Btw - I have that hand primer and hate it as well.
Sean Dobson yes it is! Otherwise you won’t get the bullet in, and if you do, it’ll mess up the bullet on the way down. Most die sets for 9mm should come with an expander.
Also worth doing an accuracy test, even though you may not care much for target shooting, its worth doing. You might find dropping down to 5.2gn or going up to 5.4gn will make a difference. Instead of shooting into a log when testing your reloads with the Chrono, stick a target on the log and check for accuracy!
chris grace there’s no feeding system. So you would have to place each primer in the cup individually. Since it’s generally a good idea to avoid touching the primers all together, I’ve never really messed with that method.
@@TheOutdoorGeneralist ok just wondering I'm just now getting into reloading have everything except primers I've seen others use both methods I'll try both just to see which i like best thanks
chris grace A glove would work! I can imagine that process would get a little laborious if you were loading more than a few rounds, but it would work work for sure. Good luck with your reloading adventures!
@@TheOutdoorGeneralist just looking forward to getting started with it but those dam primers!! On a couple of waiting lists hopefully soon will have some
You should measure cases to determine if they need trimming. You could use your press on the downward stroke of flaring to prime. Finally, get rid of that electronic scale and get a good balance beam scale.
cal30m1 Thanks for the feedback! Pistol case measuring: I do once in a while. Never found a 9mm case that needed trimmed, though. Priming: if my press had a feeding system, I might consider it. But I don’t want to handle each primer and set it in the cup. I’ll keep using my hand priming tool. Scale: I do have an RCBS balance beam, but I rarely use it. I have replaced the electronic scale with a much better one though. And when checking it against the balance, it’s always spot on. Much quicker too.
Honestly, with my practice 9mm brass, no. It doesn’t really stretch at all. When the primer pockets get too loose I throw them out. Is this best practice? Probably not. But I load somewhere around 6000 rounds of 9mm a year using mostly range pickup brass and have never had a problem. With rifle brass I either measure or trim every case.
Next time you do a reloading videos don’t speed em up. I personally like just watching the process in real time. Maybe just put time stamps to the next step in the corner?
Please get yourself a Dillon press, a Square Deal would be nice for instance. thank me later...and please throw that powder scale out of the window. But, nice video bro! Happy shootin’
Powder scale has been replaced. That Hornady one was a piece of crap, you'r absolutely right. Can't afford a Dillon, but recently added a Loadmaster to the bench. Video on that to come soon.
If you shoot enough to use a reloading press you can’t afford not to have a Dillon. I run an old 550B and at a leisurely pace I can make 300 rounds of 9mm in an hour including setup and tear down.
