The results of this test were a total dumpster fire, you should try not to duplicate these loads.

I just stumbled upon this. Good info. I myself a "roll yer own" guy. I was looking at getting this caliber upper. Ya got me convinced! 223 necks are very fragile for reloading. This is a great alternative cartridge! Plus I already have 357 mag.

350 Legend is a persnickety cartridge. We had dreams of grandeur when it was first introduced, but those have been wiped out. PLEASE, Doc, be very careful with whatever you decide on. Maybe I can jump in and help. My AR 350 is Aero Precision receivers and hand guard with a Shaw Precision Accuracy Barrel. I’m hunting with that and the 270 Winchester.

Definitely going to tread lightly with the duplex loads, although it shouldn't be much different than a single projectile of the same weight. Your set up is much nicer than mine. Good luck this season brother 🇺🇸👍👊

Just for nothin', how about trying some Unique for the plinking loads. First, Use with caution and work up any load here safely. I have used that powder with cast bullets in everything from 223 to 300BO and even 6.5 Creedmoor and 460 S&W in a T/C Encore. Personally I would start with Lee 158gr cast bullet resized to .356" and 8.0gr of Unique and work up (a start load for 357 Maximum). 2400 would also make a great plinking load, with the same bullet it has a slower burn rate so it might be easier to cycle the action, I would start at 16gr and use standard primers, magnums not needed.

Unique is one of my favorites, but I've retired from the 350L until I get a bolt action. I have a partial can of 2400 sitting around, another great cast bullet powder. Thanks for the recommendation🇺🇲👍

The 350Legend for me is not a plinking round, but a hunting round, I tried PC bullets in the 444, never got any kind of repeatable accuracy, with know accurate Cast bullets. Also the same with the 30-30. I love my “M” dies, they give you the best in a concentric seating taper, it really helped with Cast bullets with gas checks in straight seating. The 124FMJ do interest me, will see how they cycle and function and how accurate they are!

I've actually dabbled with the same concept using RMR round nosed 147 grain bullets and lil'gun. They were reasonably accurate out of my 350L ruger american ranch, sporting a 2-3 MOA group at 100y (wasn't really serious of putting this on paper, easily headshots a steel sillouette) and even pushed out to man sized target hits at 200y. Not bad for a 9mm bullet zipping at 2000+ fps! They did not feed great, needing a certain finesse along the bolt to get it to feed properly. Just for kicks, I ran some on a buddies AR (BCA upper) and it actually cycled. I am now involved in the wonderful world of subsonic load development. Since Im running them in a bolt action, I don't have to worry about it cycling. Loaded up some 165 grain Xtreme plated bullets (very long, 350L like projectile) with titegroup and they made a satisfying poof. Now the bigger question is how well will it even stabilize in a 1:16 16" barrel. Hopefully enough to lob it down to minute of man sized steel at 100y.
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 9 месяцев назад
That's pretty cool. These were a total failure and never fed properly in my AR, but maybe the 147 might with a little more meat to hold onto or seated out further? Would much rather have a bolt gun in 350L. Thanks 🇺🇲👍

I was thinking of doing the same thing with the 9mm 147gr but after I talked to my gunsmith he said that a pistol bullet wasn’t made to be shot out of a rifle barrel at those speeds. Makes sense to me. I’ll be using it more for hunting then a plinking rifle. If you want to plink go back to the 22lr or 357 mag lever action. Just my opinion
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 2 года назад
You're not wrong, but every different jacketed bullet is made differently and some jackets are thicker than others. I'm hoping I randomly have a thicker one. Anyways, just testing a few loads to see what happens. I'm not pushing them as hard as the cartridge allows. Just seeing if it can function and what sort of stability it has. Esaub Outdoors just posted a video trying 124gr FMJs with 2400 and they seemed to be grouping. I still have to take mine to the range. Thanks and happy holidays!

I have been working with a plinking/cycle testing round.(I have built about 25-30 AR .350 Legends). I bought about 300 Hornady 9mm 147gr FMJ bullets and have been noticing some walking of the bullet when cycle testing loaded and dummy rounds. I was loading with a COAL of 2.175 and taper crimping up to 5 thou and still getting movement. I am going to try a deeper seating depth and see if that helps. Any thoughts?
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 2 года назад
I would suggest trying a shorter seating depth. I haven't tried a 147 but they could probably go a bit shorter, maybe all the way down to where the ogive starts. Hard to tell how much room you have to play with without a picture. Be careful with too much crimp since it headspaces off the case mouth like a 9mm or similar cartridge. Hopefully that helps. Good luck 👍

what about copper plated 124gr 9mm xtreme bullets?
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 2 года назад
They would work at lower velocities that wouldn't cycle an AR. No problem if you're using a bolt gun or just single shots. Plated bullets can separate mid flight if spun too fast. I know Berry's lists 1250fps max for their plated bullets, but xtreme might have a thicker or thinner plating. Maybe try 5-10 rounds if you have a bolt gun, but it might not be worth the effort in an AR if you want something that can run the action. Have a great weekend 👍👊🇺🇸

@@DummyRound Just to add a bit of AR build interest I like to build AR's in odd cartridges so I have AR's in 17 Remington - 6mmx45 - AR 10 uppers in 6mm -284 win and 6.5 - 248 Norma and last AR 10 upper is done in 375 - 325 WSM so I have a AR 10 to match the 375 H&H mag . There is a RU-vid video of a AR 10 in 458 WSM . AR 10 WSM magnum bolts are bought from KAK industry's web site and the 2 inch longer & 3 inch longer rifle gas tubes come from KAK and white oak armament. I have the other common AR uppers in 223 - 224 Valkyrie - 7.62x39 . Everything for the AR 10 upper for 308 is on the way . For large bore AR 10 on KAK industry's sells the AR 10 barrels for 358 win now that would be a great Eastern deer gun where shooting is close and anchoring a deer in it's tacks is a must. It took me 3 years to find where the AR 10 WSM bolts are sold so anytime I can add info for AR builders I am always adding information where to find parts.

@@Lure-Benson Great info so thanks for sharing. I haven't done any AR10 builds yet, just going down the line on all of the AR15 cartridges that interest me so far. Always appreciate the information! Also what kind of brass catcher do you use with your side charger? Looking into getting a catcher so I don't have to chase my brass so much, I plan for this to be a regular plinking cartridge for me since it will run well in my supressor and I tend to love plinking with the odd ball calibers (.25 ACP is my favorite plinker)
@DummyRound
@DummyRound 2 года назад
@@SuperCinemaCraft that's awesome, just make sure to clean all the factory oils off the dies before you start using them. I started with a set of Starline but wanted to try out the Winchester head stamps since I got them properly sized finally. The Starline is great stuff, just make sure to trim them to proper specs. I'd love to get a can some day, but that probably won't happen any time soon. My BCA upper is a standard rear charging set up, and I'm using the cheap $15ish Caldwell brass catcher. It just Velcros around your handguard and has a zipper on the bottom for easy collection. It gets a bit flimsy if you unload an entire standard capacity 30rd magazine, but when I'm doing load work up or testing, it does great for 5-10 at a time.

You can polish the seating stem for the bullet you'll use easily . Put some metal polish or lapping compound on the bullet nose and spin it in the seating stem . It will form the seating stem to the bullet profile . It doesn't take much , you can do it by hand or place the bullet in a drill and spin it . @DummyRound

Definitely not the same loads, aka powders and charge. But, similar projectiles could probably used across those depending on how they are sized. 9mm and 350 Legend are .355"-.356" diameter, while 38/357 are .357"-.358" diameter. If using cast bullets you can just size them appropriately, but jacketed will be a bit more specific. Thanks and good luck!

Depending on what brass you use, some have thicker walls than others. You can also size them down to 356. Some have gone as far as having a smith open up the chamber to accept the wider variety of 357/358 bullets.

@DummyRound

I've heard jacketed pistol projectiles have thinner/softer jackets than rifle rated projectiles, and each brand is different. Perhaps that is leading to poor accuracy? Only way to know is to test it. I saw a trick for eliminating that crease in the cast bullets when seating them. Take the stem that you use for sizing the cast ones and remove it from the shell holder. Remove the seating stem from your seating die and replace it with the push thru stem you use to size it. The flat on the stem will push on the flat of the bullet, no damage to the top of your cast bullet :-)) PS: Noth much on the duplex loads, they make me a little nervous !
