Step 1 in this series is to grind glass into the consistancy of flour. Glass is a key component in a primer. It takes about 20 minutes to grind up a small flat piece of glass. Before I made this video I had no idea what to do. It's neat as a new experience... for the first 5 minutes. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Hang in there and learn.

Mark is the man. I prefer Pyrex-boro-silicate glass (same as beaker glass). A technique I have learned that saves time, break the glass up first into small pieces, wrap them in several layers of paper, then put inside a tight weave cloth and pound the glass using a hammer on a hard surface, vise plate or anvil. This will pulverize it pretty quickly into a fine powder.

I've tried several layers of plastic and the shards work their way right through it and it becomes kind of a clean up /separation problem. Paper you could probably float or burn it. I so happen to have a broken beaker (boro) and have been waiting for the right oportunity to harvest the best glass for primers. I need to re-make this video (half-done) . Marshall has since told me that marble (mortar) is a poor choice. It's too soft and porous for a chemists needs. I also tried to grind too much glass at once and made this job more difficult than it needed to be.

I do this in an analytical lab. Don't fill up the mortar. It has to grind between the mortar and the pestle. If too full, 1/2 of the stroke is moving excess glass out of the way.

T y so much for tip on my technique... My first attempt with that thing. Chopsticks and sticky rice is so much easier. Marshall also said mine was made of marble.... Ceramic would have been a better choice but at bath and beyond ... This is all they had....so.... Brute force wins the day

@@helpmenowmark We use agate mortars and pestles in the lab but your size would be $350. Think of having to grind up a whole 2 quart Pyrex measuring cup in order to take a representative sample weighing only 50 milligrams. Heartbreaking.

@@MichaelJohnson-fe8tm uh..... It took about 4 or 5 hours.... Not grinding.... Camera work.... Ran out of disk space twice....battery once.... And the 4 th attempt ... I looked up and the camera slipped.... I was recording my shoe tops for a half hour

I cut a fair bit of obsidian to knapp into knives as a side job. I use a tile cutter. after use, there is a lot of glass dust that settles to the bottom of the basin. It is very fine, but I imagine it would work fine for this

OMG. I just convinced myself that I was going to go to the GoodWill and see if they had any coffee bean grinders to perform "the ultimate sacrafice". I'm working on another movie. Somewhere in this junk pile of mine - I had a bunch of lug-nuts which i think would be perfect. But ... what sized balls and for how long the tumble?

what mesh did you use to filter with. i used one of those fine mesh coffee steel filters. i don't know if they are the right mesh.

Grind it until there is No grittiness whatsoever. Flour will go through a mesh of (30,40,50). This is finer than that. I really don't know the mesh at this time. rumble.com/veq9ct-what-mesh-should-the-glass-for-primers-go-through.html Join us at: mewe.com/join/primerreloading

Thank you for the reply as I haven't taken the time to look for one (at 'say' GoodWill). For this video I had to grind it on several times because my camera battery ran out, I ran out of disk space twice, and the camera focus was way off! Aaargh. About 5 hours of my life - gone! I should have a lifetime supply though! Do you reload primers? We have improved formulas if you are interested. Be well.

Yes - Our Achilles heel is the primers. Don't throw away your spent primers. Put them away for that rainy day. I need to get busy and make more videos. I know. I know.

The quality of the sulfur can make it fail. Also.. where did the glass come from? Test with a sample the size of a red roll blister cap and it should make ur ears ring when struck with a hammer on an appropriate surface.

Roger, I'd use sand before that. It was a lot of work and I'd gladly buy a new coffee bean grinder before I attempted it again. Lots and lots of work. There's some new primer formulas better than H48. Documentation can be found at aardvarkreloading.com/primers.html (if you are interested - please feel free to pass the word).
