When he got his first pair of hockey skates, he wouldn't take it off. Regardless of the weather, or how cold it got, he would be outside practicing. And people said, remember the name Jonathan Toews. Because one day, he'll be in the NHL.
Overrated? He won the cup at 21, 24 and 26 years of age. He's been the captain and the number 1 center of his team for those 3 cups. He has 1 Conn Smythe. He's been in the top 4 for the Selke trophy 6 times. He was named Best Forward of the tournament in Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Give the guy the respect he deserves.
FiteMeIRLlilGaiBoi420 so if you switched Malkin for Toews in that situation are you saying that he wouldn't have those accolades? bullshit. malkins way better than toews
Great point Butters Scotch. Kunitz is a great example, no less contributes more to his team than Captain Overrated! I think more and more people are starting to wake up to the fact that Toews is just an average player at best.
Overrated? Hes won 3 Cups, he was the best forward in the 2010 Olympics, won Canada a world junior on his stick alone. Lights out whenever you need him to be. One of the best 2 way forwards of all time
Love this guy as a captain. Has skill set for hart like seasons but opts out of it for more defensive responsibility. He's the back bone of his team and forces others to elevate their game.
The best leader in the NHL! Thank you Toews so much for making the Hawks such a great and memorable team to watch over the past 10 years! You will always be Remebered! 3:47
I Respect Jonathan Toews for serving the hockey community. Not only that but his touchy comments on the late J.P Parise who coached Jonathan with Zach Parise J.Ps son. Which was very sweet and nice of him. He has my respect. I'm a Wild fan
why so many dislike?! Did people that got there didn't thought it was about toews lol? or you come to watch this vid only to dislike it!? some people don,t know what to do with their free time....
I'm a Blues fan. Toews is a much better player than Malkin (the person people keep mentioning in the comments). Malkin may be a better goal scorer, but toews is one of the best two way forwards and has the leadership skills that very few possess. He may not have the most points under his name, but he's the player every team needs. He brings so much more to the game than just having the ability to find the back of the net. His drive. His intelligence. His role as the leader of a dynasty. I hate the Hawks, but I absolutely respect this guy.
glennhagstedt no he’s really not. No one has even heard of him in the last few years. Malkin is not that good. Even Taylor hall has an MVP trophy so let’s just settle down
Johnathan Toewes has more of those " leadership intangibles" then any player in the league, and is one of the ten best captains in NHL history. His vision, hands and attitude helped lead the hawks to a modern day dynasty, and even though his stats might not show it, any player in the league will yell you straight up he belongs on this list.
sid-samonella, theres more to hockey then scoring goals. Put into consideration what he does on the def side of the puck, his assists and starting runs, and leading a team to three cups..and for those who comment on getting knocked out two first rounds, that must mean Ovi sucks since the caps rarely make it out of the first round the last several odd seasons..once again theres the 3 cups and olympic medals
This almost looks like a memorial-video for the newly-died, which made me think... Toews: "I'M NOT DEAD!" Community: "What?" Sportsnet: "Nothing, just watch the video and give it a like."
I know this is a pretty irrelevant video but I have no idea what happened to Toews. Since June of 2015, it seems like his drive and desire to win has faded away. The video shows a guy who would stop at nothing to win and literally take the team upon his back in order to get to overtime or win the game. Now, it seems like he could give two shits about the team. He’s one of the highest paid players in the NHL and it seems like $10.5 million a year has made him feel complacent. Totally complacent. Call me a bandwagon fan if you want but I was 11 when they won the Cup in 2010. I remember that day crystal clear because I was at a White Sox game and watched them win it on the Jumbotron in center field and I can remember the feeling of a city being united in a way it hasn’t been in 49 years. For those next 6 years it was a privilege to watch them take the league by storm all led by the man in this video. Now, Toews is the Captain of a team who doesn’t have an identity, doesn’t have a shot at making the playoffs, and doesn’t have the will to win. All he seems to care about is what climate change policy Trump decides on, golf, and touching his girlfriend’s boobies every night he gets an assist. He is already one of the greatest players to play, but why stop there? He could be legendary but chooses to plateau. I guarantee Crosby will win another 2 cups while Toews is on the putting green in June. It’s pretty tragic.
Honestly ever since he got with that girlfriend you mentioned his play has kind of declined. He also only made one post about climate change so just relax a little. Crosby isn’t winning two more cups and Toews probably ain’t either. Toews could however easily make the triple gold club two more times and be the only one to ever do it if he wanted but you are right, he seems to have stopped caring about being legendary
When people say this guy is overrated and doesn't deserve to be in the top 100.. Absolute idiots, he's not only one of the best two way guys but also close to a point a game player in the playoffs, yeah obviously things didn't work out this year vs Nashville but it's a team game, one man can't do it all.
The ONLY player from the Blackhawks dynasty era who maintained his integrity and pride. After Kane went to the Redwings, all the other big stars from the team that won multiple Cups sold out. Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Crawford, Hossa, all of them are dead to this city now. They cheered for a Wings player, and they lost their home in Chicago. Toews wouldn't do it. Captain Serious is still our guy.
We will. And we will come back stronger to redeem ourselves from that embarrassment. Remember our rookies Hartman, schmaltz, hinostroza, kero to who all contributed to a 50 win season will be in year two. Also 60 goal scorer Alex debrincat in the only will move to ahl and will get a crack in the nhl sometime next season.
Toews wouldn't be such a bad guy to have on your team at $5 mil a season as a 2nd line center, but at his current contract its just brutal and makes him impossible to move without retaining salary.
Toews is overrated, but so are many Penguins players now lol. Crosby being the 5th best player in hockey history??? He missed majority of his peak seasons, and never dominated the league in the realm of Lemieux or Orr when healthy lol. He has a "chance" at top 10, but that's about it. Hasek should be that number 5 spot, considering his insane longevity (three decades of professional hockey), and absolute dominate peak that is ahead of Jagr. Malkin is not Yzerman/Sakic/Trottier/Messier/Clarke/Mikita/Esposito level lol. You're out of your mind if you actually think that. Yes, maybe he had that "talent", just like Forsberg, but he is waaaay too inconsistent and injury prone to be in the same sentence as those players. Letang is not a hall of famer, so stop comparing him to Leech, Niedermeyer, or any other low rank hall of fame defenseman. And people who are comparing Murray to Hasek/Roy/Brodeur because he won "two cups" in his first two years, needs brain surgery.
John Smith Crosby at 5 makes sense, his point per game average is the 3rd best ever and doing in it a era where you need a lot more skill , Malkin is better than those guys ,maybe not yzerman and sakic but definitely better than mikita, espo, messier. letang is comparable to those guys playing style wise I agree not hall of famer. people have to be on meth if they think Murray is in the realm of those guys, not saying it will never happen, never know but I highly doubt it Pens fan
Hieskanen LOL what did you want me to do, obviously looking in hindsight this was stupid to say but did you expect me to predict the future? Read the time stamps before you say something like that you bozo
Good player, Great leader and a winner with a great team over the last 8 years...nothing more. People, Media, and especially Blackhawks fans overrate him to death...trying to compare him to all time greats who are far above him individually. Toews never even a point per game player, never won a hart, art ross, lindsay or rocket trophy, never been a point per game player or better. Anyone would want him on their team if he weren't making 10-11 million, he had alot more offensive talent when he was younger but has worked on his two way game as a centre, good guy and player but not = to Crosby or a Yzerman.
This great leader stuff people bring up about him is really superficial. He's a generic star player with a great GM, that's it. If he was a Slovenian drafted by the Coyotes he would finish his career leading no one to anything.
Ppl love him as a captain. Playing the 2way and being more responsible. Ppl view him as opting out of performing in a Hart like matter to attain more responsibility for the team. Of course the rings elevate his status.
sportsfan 95 they both have different strenghts. i'd say toews is better at faceoffs and defensive side, while malkin is better in point production/offense
He's way too overrated with things like "Great leader" or "Great defensive forward" He's never scored more than 70 points and that was very early in his career. He's a good player but has been blessed with great players around him, definitely not one of the best 100 players.
He had 2 points in the playoffs this year and an amazing 58 points in regular season. He's been getting worse every year. And he hasn't scored more than 70 points, his career high is 76. Also he's no where close to being point per game in the playoffs, 128 games 110 points.
Statistically, he doesn't look that legendary. But when you consider his defensive output, he's great and in terms of leadership, there hasn't been anyone like him.
Dmoney Ugene I completely understand that. However there have been a lot of players that have come before him with those qualities. Especially those that have already retired and have a well established career. Pavel Bure for example, was probably one of the first players that used his skating ability and speed to completely change the game.
lol...no, he isn't average. he's a top two-way center with 3 cup rings and 2 gold medals. he was a top point getter on all those winning teams. he played in all situations and took the most important draws and was on at the end to protect all the leads.....and you're a dummy.
So many centers better then Toews. Crosby, McDavid, Malkin, Kopitar, Stamkos, Tavares, heck, maybe even Seguin or Thornton. Matthews in another year will be better then Toews. Most overrated player in all of sport.
