I'm 58 currently, and first heard of Rush by randomly seeing their 'Fly By Night' album displayed prominently at my local record store in 1975. I was 14, and just getting into hi-fi, shortwave, CB, Ham Radio, guitar, etc. I was a kid into exploring hobbies and music, you might say. Anywho, I looked at the album and thought, "how interesting". One listen, and I was blown away and hooked instantly! First saw them live on the '2112' tour at The Capitol Theater, in Passaic, NJ (video is here on RU-vid), and have seen them at least 65 times on every subsequent tour since! My favorite band since 'discovering' them as a teen. Long live Rush, and thank you Neil for your inspiration and talent, over the decades, through thick and thin. R.I.P. master.
millfred123 I noticed that. They also played Limelight at one of the stadiums (maybe in Baltimore?). I just know it was played as bumper AND in a stadium.
that's because there were so many Rush fans who you never expected were fans. unlike metalheads and rappers and all those other ones you could tell a lot of times cuz they pretty much shoulder demographic Rush fans were very quiet reserved many introverted. yeah that was one of the things about Neil the intelligence of the lyrics and the concepts that he came up with we're just phenomenal and it drew many people to the band.. they may not be your outright concert-going extroverted loud partiers.. but there was that other sector of Rush we called the geeks.. I was proud to be a Rushian for 35 yrs

Start with their first and Fly By Night but check out 2112 a must, and especially A Fairwell to Kings. 2112 is just devastating. And then Strangers in the Night from UFO. Early Scorpions with Uli. You'll get there...!
@Luuk Hulsman Wow! How cool is all that?! Well all i can say is Fantastic! Pete's advice here on one thing I think is crucial for all of us.. We all should dig the deeper tracks by all these bands we love and kinda stay away from the radio hits and the overplayed worn out ones we already love and have heard thousands of times. At my age in the late fifties I am still discovering underappreciated gems like 7 Stars from Uriah Heep that just knock me out!
The other story is how secret and private his cancer was. His inner circle closed ranks. Classy, respectful, awsome. He died days before the announcement w/ dignity. RIP Neil.
unlike Gary and Alex Neil led a very private life for the longest time. Ged puts it all out there for the fans and anybody baseball games baseball the big book of bass.. Alex goofs off and is found around a lot of time popping up on the interwebs and different places..l..but Neil was very more reserved and quiet it took the death of his wife and daughter to make the motorcycle trip which resulted in the Fantastic book Ghost Rider but prior to that when Rush wasn't touring. he was a lot more reserved.other than maybe coming out for an interview in a studio or public place a lot of people didn't really know a whole lot about his private life which is how he wanted it...and you have to respect Geddy and Alex after 45 years of a strong friendship and bond I'm sure they knew he probably told them but did not divulge it even to the rush fans or anybody keeping it sworn to secrecy.
@Laverne Johnson 🤔Gary Lee Weinrib is Ged's real name 😉 when he was young his polish🇵🇱 grandmother 👵🏻who did not speak very good English.. used to call him sounding very quickly as she called his name.. Gary it came out sounding like Geddy..so the whole time it always stuck his friends made fun of it back in high school in fun and they call them Geddy Geddy😨🙄😂😂 because that's what it sounded like Grandma was saying. Gary was perfectly fine with it and pretty much everybody called him Geddy from that point on in his youth. and the rest is history Laverne.
I'm going back to Geddy interviews from 2, 3 years ago and he says what was happening ... RIP Neil Peart. I mean, Geddy explains that Neil's health had been deteriorating, he'd been in pain, and he wanted to retire, to 'go out on top.'
@@kevinthomas6328 yes you must remember Neil treated playing the drums like an athlete approaching a sport. this was prior to the cancer diagnosis that you would have read but Neal basically trained for a tour and to playlifting weights and doing a lot of other stuff and it was gradually taking its toll because he was such an intense drummer..
I was struck by that too. They let him go out the way he wanted...anonymously. I am happy for him about that but as a lifelong fan I wish I had more time to process. Utmost respect to his inner circle for keeping it quiet. I think we all wish we had friends that cool!

People who don't know rush won't understand he is one of the greatest musicians of all time NEIL PEART. A humble guy .He took people down a different route musically .They went through every genre of music and pretty much out lived most bands over 40 years. My first hearing of rush was Hemispheres at the age of 9 10 must admit the titles and arrangements were a bit strange but The Trees and La villa strangiato blew me away how did this guy come up with this concept I'll never know. Truly incredible. Thanks NEIL PEART you will never be forgotten. All the love and support to his wife and family and Alex and Geddy all rush fans are a big family.

I started with Rush in 1984 with Grace and I was blown away not only with the music but the lyrics. Neil was so amazing with the lyrics and what he was saying in each song. I still think Bravado from Roll The Bones is the greatest song ever recorded. Neil was not only a drummer but the heart of Rush. If wouldnt have come into the band in 1974 after John left we may not be talking about this band to this day. Music will just not be the same without Neil. He was a master and a legend. That was a lovely tribute, Pete. I too was caught up in the emotion on Friday night, as we all were. I still feel quite sad, but at the same time very proud to be Rush fan. I am extremely grateful for having seen Rush three times here in Glasgow. Snakes and Arrows 2007, Time Machine 2011 and Clockwork Angels 2013. They were a phenomenal band and will always be one of my very favourites. Got all the albums and will indeed be playing them all over the next week. Neil Peart, from all the interviews and from everything people say, it is clear that he was a genuine, intelligent, fascinating and truly inspirational man. As a drummer, what more can be said that hasn’t been said already? He was totally unique. If you try to drum like him, you get called a show off, only Neil Peart could get away with being that brilliant because his style was so perfect for Rush. You are quite right to be emotional, it’s natural and makes us human. People like that are rare, and they have filled our lives and built pop culture. Our lives are better thanks to Neil Peart. It’s a sadder world without him, but his music with Rush will always be there.
Neil was and remains my hero, like he is for so many of us. I cried on Friday and spent the weekend revisiting memories related to Rush and NP, through personal experiences, their music and DVDs, and recalling passages from NP's books, and will continue to do so until the day I die. I'm 55 and listen to Rush since 1980. Rush's music has gotten me through sad times and have been a devoted admirer of the trio. Only twice have I cried when a music hero died: Stevie ray Vaughn and now Neil Peart. There is nothing wrong with showing emotion about someone who had a important affect in your life.
When I heard on Friday of his passing; I immediately cried. As a long time fan, who has seen them 15 times, I felt like even though I never met Neil in person, I felt like I lost a family member. I got into Rush because of my father, who was in attendance for Rush’s first show in Cleveland. I grew up with this band, and at 41 now, they are still my favorite band of all time. RIP Neil, you will be missed but NEVER forgotten!

I just read that both of Neil's parents are still alive. They had to bury their son....makes it so much sadder. He also left behind a 10 year old daughter. He had so much more life to live. R.I.P.

I remember (back in my stoner days) playing the old Rush Lps with the lyric sheet in my hands and marveling at Neil's insights and imagination while I was formulating my own opinions about the world, were a major influence on who I am today. The only other one recently that hit me this hard is Bowie, who somehow kept his illness under wraps. You are exactly right, I need to go back and revisit a few of the Rush albums that I took for granted when they were released. Peace
That would be Vapor Trails (original, 1.0) for me. I had a hard time finding 1 song that I liked when that came out. Never really listened to it again. I wonder if the remastered, 2.0 version of it would change my mind, but I can't afford the CD or downloads right now Plus I need to just concentrate on Neil' work on that. Same for much of S&A.

Well said Pete. Rush's music has been with me for a solid 32 years or so. I've eagerly anticipated every release since Presto and before that I was busy collecting the back catalog as a young teen. As a drummer myself, Neil meant SO much to me. Not only were the drums obviously a prominent force in the band itself, but the lyrics he wrote were thoughtful, emotional, and inspiring. I feel sorry for anybody who lacks the understanding and humanity and who of which would criticize anyone who should personally feel the loss of this amazingly creative soul. Rest in peace Professor.

It was 1976 I was 13 my neighbor said “man you gotta listen to this band” He dropped the needle on “Working Man/Finding My Way” with the drum solo from “All The World’s a Stage”. I was hooked! Neil Peart was a huge influence in my life I will miss him.
R.I.P. Mr Neil Peart, the Professor has left us with a legacy that will live on forever. An all around class act that made many of us Canadians proud! I was influenced as a teenager banging away behind me kit trying to learn his drumming. Like you, I shed some tears at the news of his passing. Although I never knew him personally, I admired him for the person he was, a paragon of what a Musician should be. Why does it happen, because it happens, roll the bones! Long live the Professor.

This reminds me of my first Rush show in 1976 at the Glasgow Apollo end of their "Farewell To Kings" tour. I'll never forget Alex Llfeson's white Gibson 1275 double neck, or Neils amazing drum solo!
I was driving with my daughter,Bowie on the radio, i turned to her and said Bowie on my list of top three vocalists as i began to get choked up and teary eyed. Was lucky enough to see him live 5 times. Explained to her how music is the key to our soul and maker of memories. Minutes later we heard the news of Neil's passing. Saw Rush on there last two tours. I'm 53 years old and tearing up writing this. RIP NEIL.🤘🙏

I saw Rush at Stafford Bingley Hall in the UK in 1979. I was 16 my 2nd concert after Thin Lizzy. I think it was the Hemispheres tour in the UK. I went on my own, I didn't even know where Stafford was..haa, but it was a fantastic concert. My next Rush gig was in 1980 Manchester Apollo. I sent off in the post for a ticket, I got one for the front row. Can you imagine that today? I also took my first SLR camera a Mamiya 35mm and got some great photos. Another awesome concert, loud but crisp and clear sound. Neil Peart was the first drummer I thought..wowww now that man can play. What I didnt realise is what a lovely man he was. I've watched him on RU-vid and I could listen to him all day, even if he isn't talking about music, a lovely man.

robmlisanti Haha! I saw that concert in Dec ‘96 at the Ice Palace in Tampa... We had bad seats and someone walks up to us and hands us 11th row tickets and asks if we want them. We thought 11th row were crap but took them anyway. Well, as we keep passing security through multiple checkpoints and getting closer and closer to the stage, it dawned on us, wow, these are GREAT seats! Right in front of Alex and a clear view of Neil. Had first seen them for their Signals tour and was so pumped to be able to see them again for Vapor Trails. BTW, I’m working on All the Worlds a Stage myself- Peace man
I was very fortunate to catch Rush on Roll The Bones on a very chilly February night at The Cap Center. Very unique high energy of a show. The lasting memory of that 15 minute Neil solo on a spinning platform with the fiery image of red and orange lights luminating his live craft work. Un fucking believable show. Why are we here? Because we are here to have been blessed to have witnessed the incredible talent of Neil .
A true inspiration gone. So sad. Inspiration to me as a fellow drummer, biker but also as a human. What a legacy he left us. Ignore the pathetic haters. I was emotional too. Rush is one of the best Rock bands of all time 3 guys made and orchestra of music. Neil will be dearly missed he was truly remarkable for his drumming and lyrics. I am so grateful for the music and the concerts I went to.
A part of my childhood died , a huge punch in the gut. Thanks for the tribute. He was a great man and drummer as long as he was rated near the top I’m good , ...after he lost his first wife and daughter he rode his motorcycle all the way from top of North America arctic circle to the bottom of South America 55,000 miles by himself and then wrote a book about it , ...I was always was amazed with that feat....he said his baby soul need constant motion to soothe his broken heart and it was the timeless beauty of landscapes that were millions year old that gave him perspective on how tiny our souls and lives were ....nature healed him....the professor as he was called was truly a wise old soul.....R.I.P. The first Rush album I heard was "A Farewell to Kings". The songs blew me away. I was in awe. The lyrics fascinated me. I needed to know more about this band and what they were doing. I sought out more from them immediately. I was 13 and this was something I had never heard or felt. It was like being an explorer and discovering a new world. As I would eventually appreciate, Rush was able to seamlessly meld rock music with peerless musicianship with performance art with fantastical story telling with insights to humanity. This is the power of the band Rush. This is why I have wept and, will still weep from time to time, at the loss of Neil Peart. Rank him where you will on a list of drummers. Neil Peart's influence on humanity extends far, far beyond his impressive skills as a percussionist. Neil Peart helped to open and expand my mind. And more than that, his death has helped me to feel more connected than ever to the wonderful community that, I am now learning, feels much the same way I do, in their own unique and personal way.
Bought Fly by Night in 1975 the day it came out. I was sixteen then and still listen to Rush and admire all three Members. One of the Top Bands ever and always will be. I first saw them in concert in 1976 in Fayetteville N.C. Rest in Peace Neil. You will never be forgotten.
Drove around all weekend listening to Rush, and shed more than one tear. As a former Marine, I also tend to get misty on Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and almost every time I hear the National Anthem.
What a loss. I'm still in shock. He was so private. Who knew? This trio will NEVER ever create music again. Retirements can be temporary. There was always hope. My sympathies go to his family....to Alex and Geddy...and to all the fans who have been there from the beginning of their journey. What a legacy Neil leaves. What a mind...what a drummer....what a human being. They were so great live. You always left with positive spirits and just feeling good. I am so glad they finally got the respect they were due. Being a former drummer he was my favorite. Back in around 90ish my younger brother was getting into rap and I bought him a Rush ticket and so we went to the concert, then when Neal did his solo my brothers jaw dropped and he looked at me like he just saw God....after that he and his friends were constantly playing Rush. Also, I admire your ability to call out disgusting trolls when need be. The fact that you had Neal at #3 with your superb collection of music and seemingly endless knowledge speaks volumes of how much you admired the late Neal Peart.

Great tribute, Pete. It's almost difficult to discuss a drummer and lyricist like Neil without repeating what's already been said. I'm 36 years old now, and I got into Rush was about 22. Despite them being the first prog band I delved into and fell in love with (along with Floyd), the magic has never faded.
The passing of Neil has affected me like no other. I am now 50 and got into Rush aged 14. That's 36 years I have loved this band. I took up the drums because of Neil. He was my hero. He read books, spoke articulately and was a family man. The antithesis of a rock musician. He walked his own path with grace and that's what I loved about him.
Neil Peart’s passing was a bummer. He was such an important influence to me that when I was on vacation in the Summer of 2017 and was staying at a Holiday Inn at Saint Catherine, Ontario, I almost scheduled a 16 mile jog to run to Lakeside Park where he grew up as a teen and to see the world the existed around him to gain insight on how he wrote his song lyrics. Him and Roger Waters were the first two Musicians that made me read lyrics more seriously and appreciate the importance of song lyrics. Totally agree with you. Losing Peart was like losing a best friend and even a family member. A lot of his lyrics echo in the paradigm of my thoughts. Closer to the Heart, the entire poem about the solidarity of mankind touches me to this day. Entre Nous: “we are secrets to each other, each one’s life a novel no one else has read...” I read the lyrics toFly By Night and think of the tiny town he came from, I hear the voice of a young man who’s apprehensive of the long journey ahead him. What a journey he had. So glad he was able to share that journey to us.
Neil....wow...end of an era.. Hands down greatest drummer of all time in my book.. Those beats and fills are absoloutely technical.. Rush provided the souns track to my life and many others.. Thanks for the music the memories, he will be missed.

1976 Rush opens for Kansas at the Capitol. Didn’t know who they were before then but bought All The Worlds a Stage the next day. Great Peart solo that night.
First time listening to you Pete, but wanted to thank you for such a wonderful tribute! I’m 54, and RUSH was the band that got me through high school. Like you, I was a fan prior to Moving Pictures, with Hemispheres and 2112 making their indelible mark on me. But MP sealed it, and that was it. No other band even came close. Signals and of course “Subdivisions” became my anthem. We are a unique and loyal fan base. And I agree with you, this hits us all hard, harder than I expected. Mainly because, like you, I was “ hoping” to be able to see him play just one more time. Don’t let the trolls get to you. They are jerks looking for a rise and don’t deserve your time. Neil and Rush have been a huge part of my life as a Musician and a Human being. Neils brilliant lyrics have opened my heart and mind and made me a better person. We have lost a great Man who millions looked up to and adored. Rush are the band Everyone with great integrity strives for. A great void in my heart , the Love he has left with us all. not only his amazing talent but the dedication to his craft that he shared with us all will never be forgotten. I was and still am utterly shocked and heartbroken over the news of Neil Peart's passing. Neil was a genius drummer, lyricist, author, and avid motorcyclist. Neil will be truly missed. My sincere condolences to Geddy, Alex, the Peart family and friends. Rest In Peace, Ghost Rider.
Absolutely Fantastic Video Pete. Humility, Forgiveness ( saying your sorry ) and being touched emotionally, come from a position of STRENGTH, not weakness. Also, Brett Favre, Reggie Jackson, Mark McGwire, Mike Tyson, Pete Rose, Mark Messier, Gene Simmons, Michael Landon, Keith Hernandez, Bill Walsh, John Elway, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura & Jack Nicklaus have all cried in a public setting too. I've been choked up all weekend and mentally transported back to younger days just remembering and singing along to Rush songs privately all weekend. A couple of times even fighting back helpless tears watching videos. I think without Rush, my life and my attitude would be different today.. For those who were introduced to Rush, Who didn't marvel at the lyrics, their meaning and the music. For a young person to be introduced to such thought provoking depth causing personal self analization and with 3 homogeneous virtuosos laying down the mature sounds and beats like no other band of their time. We were all truly blessed and still are to have witnessed and had our minds open to more than ourselves and to behold something truly beautiful in life. Thank you Neil, thank you Rush. Thank you for expressing yourselves the way all three of you did. You all will live on for generations to come and for those not yet born who will discover and appreciate you the way we all did. Wouldn't say 'Tears are Gone' - I'm still teary eyed to this day. Grew up with these guys and love them. Neil was not only an incredible 'monster' musician as Geddy would say but such an incredible human being. RIP Professor
