Here I discuss the choices you might have to reconfigure your Remington 870 shotgun. I also go over the Choate tube extension and give a chart for different sizes of extensions versus different sizes of barrels,
Sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know a method to log back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Armando Landry I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Hello from Nova Scotia! Thank you for this video, I was having a hard time finding a video that is actually informative and had the information I need until yours. Answered all my questions and then some. Thanks again! Cheers.
I love that you put the chart up, for some reason those measurements are hard to come by with different tube companies, I just bought a +6(sure cycle brand) for my 28" barrel, they state it 16.5" I'm hoping to find a choke that will make it all flush. Great video.
Im converting my 870 defense model to a traditional hunting shotgun. Aside from the field barrel I had to buy the standard tube spring, end cap, and spring retainer. I found factory 870 wood furniture on ebay. Also because I added the side saddle I have no idea where my original receiver pins are so I purchased anti-walk screw set instead. Only thing left to think of is a plug for when im hunting. Seems like a lot of work but really didnt want to buy another shotgun when the 870 is a do-it-all shotgun. I'm keeping the security barrel and still have 4+1 functionality. Down the road may also get a slug barrel so I can hunt deer in NJ. I can only use my rifle in PA.
Great video man! I usually don't comment on anything but this helped a lot!!! Lookin at upgrading my 870 4 home defense and trying 2 figure out what barrel 2 run with a mag extension with the extension flush with the barrel or sitting right behind it look. Thanx 4 making it ez for me 2 decide which 2 get!!!
**Remington 870 Super Magnum combo with laminated wood stock** I was looking for a mag extension for my shotgun and I saw and ordered the Choate 10-round (+5) extension. I forgot that the smooth bore was a 26" and not a 28" and while waiting for my order to arrive I was already thinking about ordering the shorter 9-round extension as I feared it would look terrible. I received it and I won't be ordering the 9-round. The extension is only one centimeter (less than half an inch) longer than the barrel and it all looks fine to me. Just make sure to order the MATTE extension and not the blued version and it won't clash with the rest of the finish of the gun. To each his own but to me the length difference isn't a problem.
I'm gonna get me the Carlson's 8 rd. total capacity for my 870 !!! It's a shame we have to file out those dimples in the stock mag tube to be able to add one of these extension tubes !!!
Here's a tip.... Take a HD 17mm socket (in my case YMMV) Anyway, take a socket that fits in the barrel, but is larger than the stamped stops (I call them bullet proof tits for fun) I also use a small extension to put pressure directly to the center of the socket. Take some good oil, like 3 in 1. Or a 30 wt oil and lube the tube and the socket. I imagine you could get away with wd or rem oil, etc. I like a heavier oil. Take a hammer and give it a "light" (here again ymmv) wack or 5. I can usually put slight rotation in each tap, and knock them down it 3 or so light-ish blows. If your first socket doesn't knock them in enough, move up in diameter. Either metric or standard. You may not have thr perfect socket, which is ok. Either sacrifice a larger one filed down, or it may be ok. It doesn't take much to get them flattened, especially if you have the right socket. Older rems are tougher to do. Norinco like the HAWK 982 98 or 981r are even harder. But it's a Cake walk on late 90-present Remingtons. They're all easy..... Don't let that get to your head. It's really not a big deal at all though. You're not hammering out a barrel. If you feel like you need to pull the socket and inspect, do that, just use more oil. Less amount of blows, and movement, the least worries about scratches and whatnot. I'm sure someone has made a vid or taken pictures of a method such as the one I am recommending. Idk. I just refuse to buy a special expensive item when I can otherwise do the same thing with what's in my shop. I've been using an older Napa 1/2 inch HD 17mm socket. Just for reference sake. Hope this helps! If you haven't already bought the fancy tool. 👍
@@MostlyPeacefulCombatVet Yeah I went to Wally World and bought they're cheap brand but mighty good quality dremel plug in tool and just carefully ground down nice and smooth and tested with 12 ga. shells and wallah perfect and buffed the inside of the stock dimpled mag area and can't even tell those dimples were there and cleaned and lubed it up now just gotta go cycle some live shells through it but for now it dry cycles any shells nice and smooth with every pump action and I also have that nice off brand dremel to use for other chores and this chore only took about 30 minutes on low speed !!!!
@@jeffreyelliott622 nice, I'm glad you got it done! I used to dremel them as well. Then I learned about pressing them (or reverse engineering) Some people drill them out, and I always hate seeing people ruin their mag tube doing it. I've even seen them dremeled out..... But just a wee bit too far, and also ruined tube. And....... Now, fyi.....You'll find 217 ways to use that dremel. Haha! But Very good man! Glad you nailed it! Don't forget to report back and let us know how she shoots with MOOOOAR FREEDOM! Take care
@@MostlyPeacefulCombatVet And it looks real good too nice and smooth on the inside of the stock tube and saved myself some money from having to get a gunsmith to do it now I'm anxious to get to the outdoor range and cycle at least 18 shells through it to see how well it functions but I know it dry cycles PERFECT so it should cycle live ammo without any hiccups !!!!
I have an 18 inch 870 with 7+1 and it’s flushed to the barrel. 8 is more than enough for home defense.. anything bigger than 18 inch for home defense is too big to clear the house and you have difficulty through the hallways and doors.
This was a very informative video. Thank you. Now, does one have to have a rifled barrel to shoot slugs? I know that that would increase the accuracy, but I was just curious. And, if you do have the riffled barrel, is it bad to shoot buckshot? I am one for the flush look of the extension tube and the barrel. I like that look. I want to buy a Remington 870 Wingmaster which has an 28" barrel.
I have seen a video about a 18 inch version with a flush mag tube that hold 7. But I have read that its not easy . You need to find the ideal spring and follower to achieve that. Also the Mossberg 590 with a 20 inch barrel and flush tube hold 8 shells. So with a 24 inch barrel 9+1 should be possible. Or are these ratings for 3 inch shells?
The mathematical fact is a 18" magazine tube will only hold seven 2.75" rounds after they are crimped. The fact is many people that are saying they have a 7+1 with a 18" barrel length. No sir 90% of them they don't know they actually have a 20" barrel, with a 20" flush fit magazine tube . Just like many people don't know how long there pickup truck bed is . But sure, yes if they use extra short shells they can fit more !!! No big deal just seems kinda funny.
@@joeshirey5448 As I wrote the 590 Mossberg with 20 inch barrel hold 8 shots in the tube. So its very simple math that with a just 2 inch shorter tube 18 inch barrel and 2.75 inch shells 7 should fit!
Just bought a choate +5 for my stock 870. Also ordered a stainless tactical follower. Can I use that new follower and eliminate this plastic one that comes with the choate tube? Reason I ask is the thing is longer than the factory one and the stainless one I ordered. Why is that?
Just fired my 870 express and it of course has issues ejecting spent cartridges. So i need to work on the charmber a bit. But i wonder if the choke in it is removable, if its not then i might as well get a heavy barrel that wont have ejection issues with. Before i even get to an mag ext., low drag steel follower, an extractor, and a stock.
Possibly the extractor or ejector. Also could be operator error. Rack the slide back with authority. A quick glance at the muzzle will tell you whether the choke is fixed or interchangeable. A heavy or lighter barrel has nothing to do with the ejection issue. There is most likely nothing wrong with the chamber of your shotgun. Get some help from videos or a knowledgeable friend or shop. You will be up and running smoothly easier than you think.
