The Remington Model 7400 chambered in .270 Winchester holds a special place in my heart. I love the fit, finish and function it serves me for hunting deer in Northern Maine. Enjoy!

My grandfather won this gun in a buck contest back in the late 80s. I now have it today and I love it. I’m also proud of it because my grandfather won it. It does exactly what it is supposed to

I bought a Remington 742 in .30-06 back in 1981. I carried it on several unsuccessful hunts in California, where deer hunting is generally an exercise in frustration. I was disappointed in the accuracy, not really realizing that a 4" group at 100 yards is, as you say, "accurate enough." Note that I had see-through scope mounts and an inexpensive Bushnell 3-9x32 scope with 1/2MOA adjustments. I've since migrated to bolt actions and have never looked back. However, just for giggles, about 15 years ago I replaced the see-through mounts with Leupold dove tail mounts that are low enough to allow for some reasonable cheek weld, but stuck with the old scope. I then discovered at the range that if I simply shot Remington 180 grain CoreLokt factory loads and waited until the barrel cooled COMPLETELY, the groups really did shrink to just about an inch or so. These guns aren't intended for long sessions at the range pounding out dozens of rounds at a sitting, they're intended to be sighted in, practiced with enough to learn the gun and the load, fired a couple of times on a hunt, and then spending most of the year in the safe. Your 7400 is really a beautiful rifle, the engraving is delightful, and the 7400 has several improvements over the older 742 and 740 versions. Good for you Sir, shoot what you can shoot well, and enjoy your choices. You're definitely doing it right!

Thanks! I think you are spot on. I believe my fathers rifle will start to throw shots when it gets hot. They definitely aren’t meant to just rapid fire nonstop out at the range. I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!

I know that feeling well. I have many but my favorite still to this day is my rem sportsman 78 in 270 . It was the first gun my father got for me when I was 14. He has passed and it means more to me than any of the premier guns I have now. Far exceeds any price point in feelings and connections for I had the best father in the whole world. I got my first deer with a 7400 in .270 that belonged to my bud's family. Heart shot at 65 yards and that 6 point buck was down in a few seconds. Every year I try to buy it from him, but it's a family heirloom. Since then, I've gotten my own Remington, a 783 in .270 and it never fails to fill my freezer (almost all heart shots). My last buck was a monster 9 pointer at a hundred yards through dense brush with a 12" window between two trees. He went down a couple of yards away from the shot.

I use a BAR 308. Paul scoped 3x9 My Dad baught it many years ago when Browning arms were made in Belgium. Very smooth shooting. My Dad killed 33 deer with it, and now since it's been handed down to me I've killed two, my 9th deer! Hoping very much this 2023 season I hit #10. I've got three does, and six bucks under my belt. I decided about ten years ago I had no excitement shooting does anymore! Guess I'm a buck hunter only now. It's the challenge of, out smarting a buck, that drives me. I appreciate all your videos Paul, thanks for sharing, and helping shorten the forever long 11 month wait. Take care buddy

Great story and very compatible with my same exact feelings about my 7400. Mines in 30-06 but the exact same things you mentioned attracted me to mine. I bought it used in absolutely mint condition and the look, the wood, and the feel made me take it home that day. Accurate enough is absolutely correct. Shot 2 deer the first season I used it. Heart shots both at a very modest 70 yards. I'm 75 and had to hunt with shotguns all my life here in New York until we went to rifle a few years ago. I immediately began accumulating all the deer rifles I had dreamed about for so long and hunt with something different every year now but the 7400 is my go to rifle. No jams, accurate enough, carries nicely, fun as hell. Like you said, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Thanks for the post.

I too have one and absolutely appreciate the rifle. Always remember, there will be many nay sayers regarding this model of rifle but not everyone knows how to utilize different firearms to achieve the best results. I have the granddaddy of your gun, a 740 Woodsmaster in 30-06. Belonged to my grandpa and was passed down to me. It is a jammomatic, as about 50% of the time it jams (stovepipes) after the first shot. So it’s basically a single shot now, but I still love it and will never sell it. I also have an older 760 pump in 35 Remington. Love that gun too. Thanks for the videos and good luck hunting.

Or, it wouldn’t cycle the bolt far enough back to pick up the next round. I had to modify the magazine so it wouldn’t double feed. Finally got it to function and used it for a few years. I own a 7400 carbine in 30-06 a good rifle but it failed me once on a really big buck ! I had jump this buck out of its bed got a quick shot off an shot over it on the first shot the next opportunity on the buck was a lay up at 30 yards ! Pulled the trigger an nothing the plastic bolt cover had shattered a jammed the bolt from closing! Hence the buck escaped! Why Remington went this route who knows? They should have gone to just a polished bolt like a Winchester model 100 or a Browning BAR or H&R semiautomatic! So lesson learned check the plastic dust cover on the 7400 for wear an cracks! Especially now the Remington is out of production those replacement covers will be hard to find!

Liked your review. In 1983 I worked in a grocery store after school every night and weekends. My first rifle was a Remington 700 ADL in 222 Remington with a Bushnel Banner 4X scope. I took deer and antelope with it and lots of varmints. Does Maine see a heavy decline of deer hunters like Michigan does ? Its getting harder to hunt on private land anymore. The wealthy in MT bought up all the good areas and dont allow hunting. But yet they bitch when their range Rover hits a deer 🦌

Purchasing an item with a little “blood, sweat and tears” makes it that much more special. Yeah, Maine deer hunters are definitely aging. Fewer young people find interest in the sport and many have given up due to a decline in the deer herd. However, we are still very fortunate that Maine still has very large tracts of land open to the public. Love the bit about the Rover hitting deer 😂...so true! Thanks for watching 👍

Valco my friend. The perfect revenge: 3 months ago I seen the recent effects a late model Civic collides with seemingly a brand new Range Rover. The Civic had a mere dent and was driveable. But the Range Rover crappy front end fell apart into about 40 plastic shattered pieces. Had to be towed away. Lol

The scope can make the happy difference. Top grade scope like Bushnell, Redfield, and Leupold can put you right on target. Gas operated rifles are fine choices. Just gotta keep em clean or it will foul and jam.

The Remington Model 7400, Remington Model 7600, and the Remington Model Seven are three of my all time favorite hunting rifles. And the Remington Model 870 is one of the best shotguns ever made. Remington used to make some amazing firearms. It's a damn shame what happened to that company. Their new stuff is complete garbage. I don't buy any of their guns made after 2018 when they went bankrupt for a second time. That's when their quality went to shit.

Follow-up shot? Better be taking another animal with that second shot or else it means you aren’t treating the animal properly, imo. I shot my buddy’s 30-06 model this past weekend to zero it in while I zeroed my rifle in, as well. It is definitely a decently accurate rifle that will take deer. I just gotta point out your bias because I bought my M77 MII All Weather in .308 at 14 years old and I’m a total fanboy about my first rifle because of that.

I too have one and absolutely appreciate the rifle. Always remember, there will be many nay sayers regarding this model of rifle but not everyone knows how to utilize different firearms to achieve the best results. Can’t hand a Barrett 50cal to the three stooges and expect good results, much less reviews!😂
