I have to wonder if there is any truth to this, or if it was solely for a stunt. On the Inside Conan podcast, Scott Cronick (head of wardrobe after Bruce retired) said that Bruce had obsessively cataloged all the ties in wardrobe, and at least for Conan, he never wore the same one twice, and they were all of good quality - several hundred dollars apiece. If there was any truth, it seems like a mean-spirited at Bruce.
