Video-In this free DIY video we show you how to remove your Harley side transmission cover and disconnect & then replace your Harley clutch cable assembly inside. Make sure you have a new gasket ready to go and some oil/fluid to replace what you loose when removing the side transmission cover.
2014 & newer Harley Davidson's have hydraulic clutches, so this side transmission cover is just for looks and you'll lose no oil when removing it. There is just a bleeder valve for the hydraulic clutch line hidden behind it.
Save yourself a ton of money by not having to take your Harley to the dealership to have these types of projects done. You can do this right in your very own shop or garage and right on the kickstand. Plus, have the absolute satisfaction of wrenching on your own Harley!

I reused the original gasket when I was changing my clutch cable and this evening I noticed couple of drips on the floor. Now I have to drain the oil again, most likely have to buy a new quart and lets not forget about removing the pipes. Moral of the story CHANGE YOUR GASKETS ...

Ryan, what is the secret to getting a new clutch cable into that case on a 2015 FLHP? My son and I tried for 2 hours to get it to screw on. It's not even trying to cross-thread. Does a new cable not fit a 2015 case?

hi...i'm having a problem. I just replaced the gasket because of a leak...put everything back together, but now the bike doesn't ride anymore. put it in gear release the clutch and it doesn't go. i've tried to adjust the cable but nothing works

Great video Ryan. Slight problem I'm having though, I'm trying to put the new clutch cover on but the cable wire doesn't stretch far enough to get it into the right position. In it's current position, the clutch has far too much play and doesn't spring back once I let go of it. Did you encounter this?

Reach up to your clutch hand lever and make sure it's all the way out. That will give you the cable you need. Ride safe & Ride Often! Hi Ryan,your channel has been so helpful thankyou ,I take delivery of my first ever Harley a 2017 Fat Bob,I have one concern ,I have arthritis in my hands and find the clutch a little stiff compared to all my other bikes ,is there a way to reduce the effort required ?

My clutch cable and protective covering is always wet with oil. Seems like the oil is coming out where the cable goes into the nut that screws into the cover. Don't think it's the oring but the cable jacket itself. Your thoughts?

@@RyanUrlacher Thanks man. Yeah it seems to be from the little metal crimp that holds the protective covering in place or where the cable goes in to the nut part. I've been hesitant to change cable because I didn't want to have to remove the exhaust.

Great video. Have you ever tried doing this replacement with removing the exhaust?
@Gowergulch

I just did on my ‘13 E Glide with stock headers. I used Snap On Allen wrenches; they’re small enough to fit with just the heat guard off. And with the bike on its stand you don’t lose more than an ounce of transmission fluid.

Glad you liked the video. You can't remove the transmission or cam cover w/o losing the oil. Unless you have a model with hydraulic clutch lever then the transmission cover is just for looks and you won't loose any oil. ~ Ryan Urlacher

It varies Juan from model to model. Just give dealership a call and they'll tell you. Or go to HD website, find your bike , and download the free owner's manual in .pdf. It will tell you capacities for your year/model.
