Sometimes a patient reports their archwire has become almost completely untied. If you cannot come into the office for an appointment removing the entire archwire might make sense. You will need a "tool" that is both stiff and has a pointed end. Tools you might have at home include a large safety pin or a round wooden toothpick. The task is to remove the small o-ring that secures the wire within the brace. Place the tool in the middle of the brace and stretch the o-ring away from the gums to begin unhooking. Once the o-ring is half-off continue stretching the o-ring towards the gums until it is completely off the bracket. Be careful not to poke yourself or your patient.
