A very nicely done study showed that the most important thing with penetrating oil is "soak time". At least 12 and better 24 hrs. Immediate use is worthless. Makes sense.

I'll try it tomorrow. I've had no luck with heating up and cooling the valve. I have a drill bit end in it so it won't collapse while I grab it with a fine tooth knipex. Someone guy from a previous garage removed any sign of ever being hexagonal and the area is quite small. I've hit it with WD40 several times and long waiting periods after I cleaned up the surrounding area with a soft wheel and sprayed from the inside too since I'm rebuilding the caliper. EDIT: I got it out! After the heating and cooling tries of the bleeder screw didn't loosen it, I heated the caliper area of the screw for about 3 minutes with my MAP torch. Whil it was still hot, I sprayed WD40 (careful, flammable) at it. I can't say if it was only the heat or if it expanded enough for the penetrating oil to get finally in there but it was easy to get out after doing that once. My next option would've been buying one of those self cutting turbo nuts that are hammered on to cut a new shape on it.

Enjoyed the video but wouldn't all that heat damage the rubber parts in the calipre~??
@richardking6066

I'd be worried I might over-heat and damage the neoprene seals! I saw where someone said he always heated the bleed-screw itself, then cooled it quickly (either with water or, better, with a refrigerant spray). He reckoned if he did this three times he never failed in getting them out. I tried the same recently and it did seem to work. I also use PTFE tape on the new screw, so that the problem will not recur in future!
@JoeTheAutoGuy

the heat transfer of a caliper is actually really efficient i have never had a problem with damaged seals while doing this usually the surrounding doesnt get above 200 degrees or so which brake fluid can get much hotter than that under heavy braking , so ive never worried to much about the seals
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 2 года назад
If you take out the bleeder screw, might as well get new seal, boot and replacing the piston if it's pitted to have basically a new caliper.

TRY THIS! heat up the screw for a couple minutes and dump a bottle of water on it, the water will make it come out super easy! good luck without the water and you dont need to light the thing up cherry red

Good video. I found that applying a good never seize compound to a new bleeder will ensure easy opening of the screw next service time. Before final closing, apply more compound again, as brake fluid tends to wash it away during bleeding.

Using impact air hammer to massage on a long socket around the surounding bleeder area + 50/50 aceton and old ATF oil penetration some couple times , then get it out ! ...done! No heat needed!

A better method is a hotter torch. Red hot on the bleeder screw,ice cold water on the bleeder screw.They come right out every time.This way the iron caliper housing does get so hot and doesn't and damage any of the rubber inside the caliper.

What are opinions on the affect of 5 minutes of MAPP gas flame to the caliper with regard to heat to the piston seals?
@JoeTheAutoGuy
@JoeTheAutoGuy 7 лет назад
never had it affect a single caliper in my practice. brake components are meant to with stand a bunch of heat and disipate it . so a heat cycle shouldn't damage anything

@ninjamaster3453
@ninjamaster3453 6 лет назад
No. Unless you slip or mess up with the torch. the caliper is designed to take a ton of friction heat from braking. You're directing the flame on the bleeder bolt.

What about adding anti-seize compound to the new bleeder screw? Or is that a no-no?
@JoeTheAutoGuy
@JoeTheAutoGuy 7 лет назад
honestly never done that usually when i do this repair i urge customers to have them opened and checked every six months to avoid the seizing and on my own i flush them yearly so i dont see any reason not to a its not going to have a direct contact with the brake fluid figuratively speaking

I didn’t do anything like this. I bought a bolt, nut extraction socket set off Amazon. Buy new 10 mm bleeder screws. Pound the socket all the way on. No struggle no penetrating oil no heat. 3/8 socket set will set you back 20$

@SgtJoeSmith
@SgtJoeSmith 6 лет назад
JoeTheAutoGuy like you mentioned penetrating oils and spray cleaners are flammable and if there's a lot of grease build up on top. Just too easy for that and brake hose to catch fire or hose to melt. Even aluminum foil will catch fire. Here's an alternative to a torch. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ATSL7VE/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_5?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1. Also when ever using torch please have fire extinguisher close by. Also please in your videos in which you use a torch tell others to keep a fire extinguisher close by before you start working with the torch. Saftey first bud. I use oxy/acy torch on stuck bolts instead propane or mapp. So lot higher heat and risk of fluids or grease and stuff catching fire. And keep in mind most your viewers aren't pros like you and me. Some are trying to do this for first time and don't realize how flammable some those sprays are. Otherwise great videos and thanks for sharing. Nice that there's cool people like you out there helping to teach others!

@JoeTheAutoGuy
@JoeTheAutoGuy 4 года назад
Worked fine for years map gas torch doesn't produce heat transfer in high surface area , heat dissipates to fast in the surrounding area , localizing it the the bleeder screw surrounding , it will get hot but not more than heavy braking
