Like i said, Digimon has enough culture to fill entire landfills. Edit: I know Japan is your forte, but DO NOT be afraid to step out of your comfort zone with this franchise. As opposed to Pokemon's 890, there are over 1400 Digimon and counting, spanning FAR beyond Japanese folklore. Hell, there's one Digimon, Dagomon (or Dragomon in English), based on Cthulu.

Not just Japanese culture either, cause we got Digimon based off of the Judeo-Christian Theology with several Digimon including the 7 Great Angels, and the 7 Demon Lords, we've got Digimon based off of the King Arthur Legends, and several myths, and legends involving knight like figures with the 12 Royal Knights, and we have a group of Digimon inspired by Greco-Roman Mythology with the 12 Olympians. Plus Digimon Survive literally has a plotline the revelation that Digimon existed as Yokai summoned by Onmoyoji both good and bad before the creation of the Internet, and the Digital World.

Unlike Pokemon which are creatures, animals based. Digimon on the other hand is mostly revolves around concepts and cultures of the human race. They are basically record and data of humankind. That's why even some can attain humanlike forms. Even some are based on Events like Millenniummon which is based on the Y2K bug.

@@derrickhaggard yep, and thats not even including the four cardinal direction digimon and the fifth central dragon from Chinese, the three legged crow, wich honestly i can't remember wich culture that was from, Yggdrasil from the Norse myth, and probably plenty more. i allways liked digimon , because no matter wich creature you chose, it always turned into something amazing, with incredible lore in the later seasons, whether that be just a werewolf or the Knight of the seat perilous. XD

Well like it was hard back in the day to design a lot of monsters with a pixelated screen with dimensions of a few centimetres. Besides that, the dark versions of almost all Digimon are Virus Types of their regular counterparts.

Yes, please, more Digimon. I’ve been waiting for Digimon forever. You’ve got a lot of Digimon based off of Shintoism to Judeo-Christianity to the Greek and Roman pantheon. There’s so many of them to choose from and they outnumber Pokémon by the hundreds.

I just checked and apparently, according to Wikipedia, there are over 1400 Digimon and 895 known Pokémon (890 Pokémon published at current writing, 5 new ones confirmed for the upcoming Sword & Shield DLC), so Digimon outnumber Pokémon by over 505.

I thought it was 1500+, but close enough. Maybe I was including Appmon too. Granted the majority of Digimon aren’t gonna be based off of religion or mythology, but there’s still a lot of them. Hopefully he’ll tackle the obvious ones like the Seven Great Demon Lords and the Olympos XII.

@@sofaris576 while it's cannon in the dub that digimon are genderless, most people and monsters when addressing the main cast of digimon usually call them by w/e gender their tamer is or va may be. ive never heard them address the wild digimon unless they were the big baddies of the season. exception is likely terriermon his vas a girl and henry if i remember goes back and forth calling terriermon it and him, but he does that with all the digimon except maybe renemon

Finally, digimon. It's such a great series and truly underrated. I mean, it's still recognized fairly well, but a lot of people still dismiss it as just some "pokemon clone" but even that isn't objectively correct either. There's so much cultural background and references in Digimon. Not even from just japanese culture, but all kinds. Plus, I'm sure most people who've seen both, can agree that the Digimon show is the insanely better than Pokemon's.

In my honest opinion, the voice actor that Fox Kids chose for Renamon (in the English dub) definitely played a huge role to the overall image of her here in the U.S. Heck, she was even the inspiration for one of my characters I drew around that time! ^^ Edit: The english voice actor's name is Mari Devon. She even voiced other characters throughout the Digimon series and had some pretty great vocal ranges for them. So that's very neat to me. :D

To be honest, Our War Game was adapted pretty well. Many will say the OST in the English version makes the fights better. The biggest changes are Willis (who didn't appear in the original and was jammed in so all the parts would better connect to one another) and Tai's mom's drink/why Izzy went to the bathroom (it was too much oolong tea invthe original, but since the English version cut the set up of the joke, they changed it to a "terrible idea" juice that made a mess) In short, while the OP is correct, that part of the movie wasn't that bad...

The origins differ between seasons/media. But for the most part, Digimon lore stated that the own computer networks are tapping into a alternate realm that existed since before the Earth.

They didn't, digimon are not spiritual beings and yokai like this video implies. The director of digimon adventure said that digimon manifested themselves in the real world and people thought those were spirits, ghosts, demons and whatnot, but the guy misinterpreted it as digimon literally being those spirits, ghosts, demons and whatnot. As to how they existed before the internet, the previous reply explains it

I'd like to add that in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory. One of the cases you try to solve where you meet some sort of a modern Miko and there are strange things happening with a "certain urban ghost". so, the Miko summons her familiar which turns into a Digimon (Kyubimon) to her shock. They explained that the Digital Shift (which is an important element in the Cyber Sleuth series) affected her familiar and turned it into a digital version of itself.

Technically, he is not wrong. Just going with the Japanese version instead of the English Dub. Kinda like how it was originally the Chosen Children and then became the DigiDestined in the Dub.

For me, Renamon herself had a vague ninja vibe, one that's only gotten stronger as time went on. A focus on martial arts, turning nature into ninja tools, a focus on speed, deception and stealth? The fact that her line has no divergent path to focus on that angle is kinda disappointing. Can you imagine a Renamon rejecting the more mystical teachings of the line, focusing on scavanging from the land, using Diamond Storm to craft ninja tools, and the fire attack Tohakken/Power Paw being turned into a general purpose fire technique?

Oh yeah cause we got Falcomon whose signature move Ninja Star has it throw Shuriken in a spread pattern, it's digivolution Peckmon aka the Ninja Emu has as it's special move Kunai Wing where it throws a barrage of knives/kunai out from one of it's wings, and then we have Crowmon or as it's known in Japan Yatagramon basically the Ultimate stage in the Falcomon line was based off of design-wise the fabled Yatagarasu the three-legged crow associated with heroic ninja, and then there's the Mega Stage Ravemon who is literally a Ninja Harpy.

(To be fair, I'm biased towards anything fox like concidering my family name is "Fuchs", which translates to "Fox" for everyone who doesn't speak german). A common theme through a lot of digimon evolutionary line is approaching a more humanoid form. If I recall correctly, it has something to do with human influence bringing them more towards humanity (and all of its good and evils) rather than being bestial. Low level digimon are like basic programs on a computer, and the more powerful they become the more complex their "code" and the most complex, powerful ones (mega forms) reflect their complexity by taking on a more human form because humans are often considered incredibly complex. There could also be something like an AI that continues learning and growing until it almost perfectly mimics a human.

Oh, Goombah this is the best barrel to bust open! The seven deadly sins, the Chinese four constellations, the angels, the demons, the knights, the Norse, the Twelve Olympians! There's a Digimon for every culture. Id even go as far as to say that it was Digimon and its references that sparked my interest in culture.

Thanks for finally covering Digimon and their connections to Japanese folklore. This was one of my favorite series as both a kid and a teen. It's also what started my interest in Japanese folklore, specifically an episode from the sequel series to Digimon Adventures where the father of one of the original Digi-destined explains his theory that Digimon are just internet counterparts to Japanese monsters. It even went over the gods of the four directions from Taoism, who were counterparts of the four Digimon Sovereign (yes, I used the third series' name for them; it's what I remember). Maybe, next time you go over Digimon for this series, you could further explain that reference.
