Renault Zoe Scores ZERO NCAP

Renault Zoe ZE50 NCAP scores have been released and the Zoe failed to score even 1 star under the new testing cycle. Part of the changes to the Zoe NCAP score is due to the test being MUCH stricter than it was during the 2013 test 8 years ago when they tested the first Renault Zoe. However, the biggest issue for me with the Zoe ZE50 safety score is the fact Renault changed an airbag design that gives a much lower form of protection. I'm hoping Renault will recall ZE50 cars and fit the older airbag design to the car that better-protected occupants in a side collision. We also discuss how in some parts of the test the Zoe scored worse due to the base model Renault Zoe Play containing very few driver assists. The Zoe iconic and GT Line or GT edition specs all contain higher levels of driver assists however as per my last video on Zoe safety and due to chip shortage, the Zoe isn't sold with AEBS in some markets.
Thank you to NCAP for permission to use the footage.

Shocking. I tend to think some driver safety aids are a hinderance, but making airbags ineffective as a design choice, well that's just madness. Agree. Recall!

Agree with everything you said. Plus I agree with NCAP that safety should not be an optional extra. Eg. My i3s has 4* that’s because the safety pack is an option. BMW were miffed about this but it was their fault so I have no sympathy.

Nick I've bought a 2020 ZE50 with 1,000 miles on the clock. I've complained to Renault and received 2 emails saying the car is perfectly safe and the latest one today says Renault will not retrospectively upgrade the airbag. It's a disgrace.

Absolutely agree, who would’ve thought an European manufacturer would go backwards and even not pointing it not out this change. As it’s being specifically pointed out es a facelift, who would think about less safety. Head injury is one of the worst injuries, that’s why you wear a helmet on your push bike. This test surprised everyone, and I think that certain clubs should stand beside the owners and not beside Renault. This very likely will cause a loss in reselling the car and of these reasons, yes Renault has to retrofit, I agree. I’ve lost trust in the brand and won’t look for an electric Megane now. There is now a lot of competition.
@giovannipagani3829
@giovannipagani3829 2 года назад
they added a picture in the ZE50 user manual only. There's no mention of the side head protection even in older ze40 (and I think also in ZE20). User manual is somewhat too "generic" in describing side protection. So they could have put it in Ze20, pass with 5 stars, and then swapped with a cheaper one years ago... Maybe Renault really hopes in a reselling loss: if no one wants your Zoe they'll be the only ones willing to offer you a trade in discount on the new, safer Megane...

Hi Nick, Merry Christmas, and congrats on your baby boy. I’ve just checked the Renault Zoe website page and the GT model is now called the “GT Line +”, so if I’ve got this right it’s changed from the original GT, then GT Edition, then GT Line, and now this + version! Looking at the current ZE50 brochure dated “December 2021”, all models/trims including the Play now include the ever changing AEBS feature! (Possibly in response to the recent NCAP result?). All models also have “2 Driver airbags + 2 Passenger airbags”. Not sure if that is a change from before?

I have to agree. Resolving the airbag design is something Renault absolutely should do. There's a risk of class action against them if they don't, something I would support. Even the GT-Line didn't have AEBS at launch, mine doesn't... They couldn't get their act together in time apparently. It was added to mid-2020 manufactured cars, apparently, and then they took it off again due to the chip shortage. They ought to bring the cars in, fix the airbag and fit AEBS.

Thanks for a very clear explanation. It’s a classical example where most likely financial returns to drive more profit forced engineers to cut corners. I wonder how many more of their latest cars might have similar safety compromises? The feedback from Renault is shocking and very disappointing. Wonder if the person from Renault who wrote that would sit in this car during the crash test? Probably not, but it ok for their customers to be exposed to this danger. shocking... we think we saw ze50 adverts with 5 star safety mentioned... so it never had it...firstly it had expired and secondly renault must have known the ze50 had safety features omitted. this has all been revealed by the retest. in my humble opinion, renault need to recal every ze50 and install the combined thorax/head side airbag. dump the play model and get the retro fixed iconic re tested as their ze50 base model. renault have reduced the secondhand value of all their existing ze50 cars and according to these tests, their customers are driving around in a less safe car, than was apparently sold to them. @@NicolasRaimo I asked Renault to confirm if side aircurtain is fitted to my Zoe . Thank you for your recent contact with Renault UK regarding your Renault ZOE E-TECH ELECTRIC (ZOE). Renault takes note of the results published by Euro NCAP following specific tests on the ZOE according to its new protocol implemented in 2020 The ZOE tested by Euro NCAP most recently was the base version and, since 2018, 5 years after the ZOE was originally tested, the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) available in this base version are no longer included in Euro NCAP scoring. This includes features such as Electronic Stability Control, Speed Limiter, and seat belt reminder. Euro-NCAP ratings last for 6 years after the launch of a new model which is aligned to the 'normal' lifecycle of a model across different manufacturers. The ZOE goes beyond regulations, and Euro NCAP’s own protocols, with additional safety features, for example, the Fireman Access of the battery. Since 2017 we have adapted passive safety equipment on the car considering traffic accident analysis and reconstruction (accidentology). We have also updated the ZOE with state-of-the-art ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) dependent on specification chosen, these include: Advanced Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection; Lane Departure Warning; Lane Keep Assist, utilising onboard radar and camera. These ADAS were not fitted to the base version tested by EURO NCAP so were not accounted for in the latest results. The facelifted Zoe - ZE50 - was designed using data from the Laboratory of Accidentology, Biomechanics and Human Behaviour (LAB), which Renault operates jointly with Stellantis. The LAB collects and analyses telemetry data from all networked vehicles in France, which did not show a single accident with a tree or lamppost, as simulated by the Euro NCAP side pole impact test. However, there were accidents and incidents with pedestrians, cyclists and other road users in urban areas. Hence the decision to equip the ZOE with further assistance systems, including Lane Departure Warning; Blind Spot Warning; Traffic Sign Recognition; High Beam Assistant and Emergency Brake Assistant. The Laboratory of Accidentology, Biomechanics and Human Behaviour (LAB) was formed in 1969 by Groupe PSA (now Stellantis) and Groupe Renault. The LAB is a laboratory for accident analysis, biomechanics and the study of human behavior. Its purpose is to observe, analyse and anticipate with a view to improving road safety. The LAB has helped decrease the number of road fatalities in France by some 80% within the last 50 years. Renault reaffirms that the ZOE is a safe vehicle, which complies with all regulatory safety standards. These standards are constantly evolving and are becoming more stringent in all domains, especially in safety. Renault therefore continually improves its offer to comply with the regulations applicable where its vehicles are sold. As such features such as Full LED headlamps, Anti-Slip Regulation (traction control), CSV (understeer control), HSA (hill start assist), and others have been added to the ZOE during its lifetime (version dependant). Safety of Zoe ZE40 was one of the reasons we bought another ZE50! If this test would have come a 3 months earlier we would have never bought the ZE50 and sold the ZE40 too. Renault’s right to reply is rubbish….the safety tests are continually evolving and they acknowledge it. It changed for all manufacturers, and they all seem to be doing well. They degraded the car below 2013 safety test standard to cost cut, but with massive increase in price too. Now they come up with excuses like regulatory confirmation and all mumbo jumbo. Some one at Renault took the decision and deserves to be fired or whatever they do. @@NicolasRaimo That's what I want to know as well... I have an early ZE50 Iconic (i.e. with the wireless charger, without AEB), and I've seen some speculation that models produced around that time may still have had the 'safer' airbag design, but how can we tell for sure?

Those airbags are really awful - I'd be livid if I had replaced my ZE40 with a ZE50. This really needs to become recall if I am to ever have any respect for Renault again. As always, a great video, deserving of at least an order of magnitude more subscribers. I totally agree that safety should be standard. Retrofit the ABS sensor and missing airbag NOW! Improve the child seat situation and issue a statement to all customers regarding the seat compatibility limitations so they perches and fit the correct system. While your at it improve the 12 battery specification, they're not up to the job resulting in glitches and early failure. Agree that airbags should be replaced by Renault to include the head protection, but I doubt they will do that. It’s not a good look, to improve the car in many ways with the facelift, but save pennies with a cheaper airbag. Our GT Line is missing AEBS too as the early 2020 build didn’t have that for some reason. Regarding seatbelts, I have heard that Renault also removed seatbelt pre-tensioners from the ZE50, which if true is another poor look in terms of penny pinching vs the safety of their customers.

I totally agree with you, in fact I’d go a step further and say this is Renault saving money with little concern for safety, especially as most people would assume that a side impact air bag was standard. Yet another example of a company putting balance sheet before customer safety. Renault makes no mention whatsoever about their reasons for removing the side impact airbag and is the typical response one would expect to read from a manufacturer trying to defend their position. Thanks Nicolas. That's a pretty generic statement from Renault. I contacted them, and received pretty much the same blurb as a reply. Very unsatisfactory, indeed. Our ZE50 I was registered in early September 2020, and still has wireless charging, but it's something which is used only rarely; maybe once every couple of weeks. The wireless-charging-capable phone, if carried, is usually connected by USB, making wireless charging almost irrelevant. I'd much rather have better safety features instead of gimmicks like that. Yes, I would be much happier if Renault were compelled to recall all substandard cars, to fix the deficiencies. Even if some costs were involved, I'd pay a little for the so-called 'extras', which are essential for improved safety. The number of NCAP stars is relatively unimportant; the safety of people in and around the car is paramount.

It's absurd that "upgrading" from a ZE40 to a ZE50 will result in less effective airbags. I don't understand why they would do that either, they already have the technology and everything needed to make it work. I had been considering this updgrade, but I definitely won't while the airbag situation is as it is. I'm not so bothered by the AEBS and Lane Keep stuff, and in some situations (eg moving out to avoid a pothole) it can fight you and make you less safe, so I'm not convinced it should wreck the rating of an otherwise safe car.
