Reorganizing My Fabric Stash // Making Mini-Bolts with My Yardage

My fabric stash has been a mess for too long. It's time to make my sewing room look a lot cleaner and more organized! In this video, I will be re-organizing my whole fabric stash, plus other sewing-related things like books, patterns, trims, ribbon, etc.
Part of this is how to roll your fabric (and I mean long lengths of fabric, not measly one-yard pieces) onto mini bolts, so that you can see everything, and so that it always stays neat and tidy.
I was inspired to use the mini bolts by watching this reorganization video: • Sewing Room Makeover!!...
Supplies for my reorganization:
Half-height drawers for the Ikea Kallax unit from Walmart: www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Hom...
9-divider bins that fit perfectly in said drawers: www.amazon.com/dp/B07QW3TNP8/...
Glass shelves from Ikea for the Kallax unit: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-g...

Late to the party: If I have to measure length-I measured my "wingspan" (I know one yard is from mid-palm to shoulder ball joint )-so I always start with estimating. AND I have a 96" measuring tape-No idea when or where I got it-I didn't even realize it was 96" until one day, I measure passed 60" and wondered how I did thet...I checked: Mine is generic but Singer makes one...just make sure it is for sewing and not a steel one used in building trades

I separate my fabric by: project (fabric and trim and closures and thread all together with pattern etc); quilt fabric (yardage is folded on a plastic board and then removed so I only need one board) (separated into backing vs regular yardage vs scrap and precuts); then fashion fabric I separate by texture and weight instead of fiber content bc I can have a wool or a polyester that feel and weigh the same and can be used for similar projects And I just fold those into similar sizes and have them on shelves I have a ton of projects at the ready so my stash is mainly projects lol 😆

The measuring tape is 60" because most wide fabrics are around 60". To measure yardage you should use a yard stick and then is no discrepancy. I used to work in a fabric store and we always measure this way.
@c12341234XD
@c12341234XD 3 года назад
1) Because I worked at a fabric store (in Canada) I measure meter by meter 2) I think it's because 60 inches is the typical width of tables, fashion fabrics, and the average wingspan, meaning more than half of seamstresses (or tailors) can hold a measuring tape from arm to arm (I can't but I am super short), and a measuring tape can be fully laid out on a table (but I could be wrong)

I use 10 gallon bins and folding. Mostly because I already had bins. But I've had to fold them 3 different times before I got it right. I've heard that velvets need to be rolled (nap to the inside) like sushi. I don't have much velvet, but I have rolled mine. And yeah, folding or rolling on a board leaves a nasty little line. Learned that the hard way. I only rolled mine this last year, so, we'll see. What the world really needs are useful pattern cabinets. I played this (several times) while I worked on my sewing room. It was great to sort with you!! Stay well!

When measuring yardage, I usually measure using my body. I've learned that the length of my arm to my shoulder point is a meter, so that's how I measure. I'm staring down a sewing room reorganization myself so trying to figure that out. My mom actually bought comic book boards to store her stash on and says that's fairly economical and acid free. I would guess that 60 inch measuring tapes is because that’s basically 150 cm which is even-er than 180ish. And it’s also a fair wingspan for an average lady, so it’s as long as you can stretch the measuring tape in one, well, stretch.
