In winter, I like cozy things and plaid. So I figured I would spend this week making three cozy plaid skirts, great for vintage style or historybounding. But I wanted to experiment with different skirt methods, so each of these are made using a different method.

Your attention to detail in matching the pattern in the green plaid skirt really highlights your ability as a seamstress, and also champions the reason for home sewing. You have created a courtier skirt, that would sell, for hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars.

My cats help my sewing by keeping the ironing board warm. They love to stretch out and watch me sew, but get very annoyed when I need to press the seams. Time to buy a spare ironing board for the cats.

My ironing board has a bend at the end from my cats sitting on it and jumping off. Perhaps the cheapest board at Walmart wasn't the best choice 😅

Unintentionally watched a whole 38 min video on making skirts, after the bustle video, because The Feline didn't want to give me my arm back. You know, because, why would I intentionally watch a video on something I will actually make, when I can watch videos on things I'm curious about and have utterly no intention of ever making or wearing. Glad I did, because I have a somewhat better idea why my previous, skirt attempt likely deviated from what I thought I was making.

Little curious about the hem on the green skirt being deeper in the front, so the back isn't shorter. Its quite a dilemma to scoop out the front waist, and add a little up the back CB waist before adding waistband and lose the beautiful horizontal line of plaid. I guess it depends if you intend to tuck in your blouse or not and the focal point even waist or even hem.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
I always kind of figure that, no matter what, if your skirt is gored at all, by the time you get to the hem, your plaid isn't going to look exactly horizontal anyway.

@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Fabric stretches on the bias, so if you have a skirt that flares out quite a bit, then you're working with a fair amount of bias fabric. In general, I would say anything that has more than about a 4-5" difference in width (of each piece) from waist to hem should be hung out overnight to let that bias stretch. I hope that makes sense?

Do you accommodate the difference in skirt length from front to back hemline? I am 1 1/2 to 2 inches shorter from waist to floor in the front than I am in the back. Do you shorten your skirts in front, or do you make them the same length all the way around?
@LadyRebeccaFashions

To be honest, I haven't found an issue with it in mid-calf skirts like these (and yet, I always wind up making my historical stuff longer in back than in front...)

@@LadyRebeccaFashions Thank you for the reply. I will be making floor length skirts. I guess I will make the length different. Otherwise, they'll be shorter in back.

I would love to make skirts that are fitted, but I'm currently going through a lot of weight fluctuation, is it possible for you to show what are ways I(or anyone) can make skirts that look good/fit well that can grow or shrink with me as needed, that don't necessarily rely on elastic?

I would say for an option other than elastic, maybe try doing it 18th c style, where they tie on the sides.

All pockets should be multi-functional, right? Bath tub, seat, phone holder... Although it seems like Supervisor Dora prefers to micro-manage your projects, checking your work at every step, even making a chair inspection

Feline supervision is a necessity. Is it Dora or Adora?

Thank you! It's Dora, though technically, that's short for Nymphadora. :)

Me, a Finn: wait, that is how plaid is pronounced? I thought it was said like plain.

Are you wearing leggings, tights, or stockings underneath? I love skirts, but can't show my legs uncovered.

I personally live in knee-high wool socks all winter because my feet get super cold. They pair great with skirts because everything is covered and I'm nice and warm as long as my skirt hem is lower than the tops of my socks.

I wear tights with them. My favorites are the black super opaque 120 denier tights from Target. Those things are soooo comfortable. For nude tights, I prefer the Body Wrappers plus size tights.
