My sewing room really needed an organizational overhaul. Now it looks so pretty! In this video, I will go through how I organized everything. And it didn't even cost much to make such an impact.

I don't know how I missed these two sewing room organization videos almost a year ago, but I find them very satisfying! I'm a quilter and have my larger pieces of fabric wrapped on small bolts, too. As you mentioned, I have lots of smaller pieces, fat quarters and half yards that get folded into squares and stored upright in plastic bins.

It's honestly funny - I feel like it really helps to save space in those denser or puffier fabrics, but actually, it takes up more space for stuff like silk taffeta. That said, it really does keep them tidier, and I agree with Susan that they totally look like colorful books!

Wow, that is looking amazing! Such a lot of work, but so rewarding. I'm working on my sewing room, and I'm stealing your "mini-bolts" idea. In exchange, here's my tip for books: to keep from the temptation to "double-deep" your bookshelves with random stuff you want to get out of your hands, bring the spines of all the books to be even with the front edge of the shelf - no matter how narrow the books are. Yes, you're losing storage space, but only use that back part for "deep storage" (like super-old journals or notebooks), and only if you add a label to the shelf-edge so you know what's back there and can find it again.

My stash is tiny compared to yours, with only a handful of ikea bins full of wrapped cardboards, 1 full bin of usable scraps, 1 small basket of cabbage/coleslaw and one overflowing bin of old clothes waiting to be cut down for fabric. But I did the same process a few weeks back, so I remember how time-consuming it was. But the results speak for themselves and now I know exactly what I have. So much better than overflowing tote bags sitting in a corner of the room, looking ugly.

I have been re doing my sewing room since September! My daughter got her own apartment and my son got her room so my sewing room could be expanded. It is so nice. Even before it was done my daughter said she was going to spend time down here and bother me when I was sewing. I haven't been able to sew really because of my cluttered and crowded set up, but now it is so inspirational and cozy.I had the same problem with my table too. I had it all cleaned off then while I was working it got filled up again. another day of putting items away from the do it later containers and I am golden.

Love this!! The more I see of people using those cubby shelves the more I like them. My sewing room is a hodgepodge of old furniture. The cutting table is an old ikea change table. It works and the height isn’t bad. My biggest problem is that I have my numerous crafts plus sewing in my room. As well as a few stashes, I inherited some extra. Not to mention the bolts of fleece I got at a thrift shop. Ok maybe I just have too much stuff. I do have what I call small pockets of organization some day I might get the whole thing done!!

My sewing room is 10x10 and needs to share space with the cat's needs. In a month my husband will have a new job and be working from home and we were thinking if I could clear off my sewing table he could set up in there and be out of the way from me and the kids during the day. How about making a Victorian(?) Crazy quilt with your scraps of velvet ? Also maybe subdivide some of the bins under/in your table using ziplock bags. The bags would still be in the bins. I would also suggest maybe larger plastic bins for that costume show project that is in corner on floor under the table. It may be more aesthetically pleasing. And for on top of your tables (I couldn't really see them all), crystal clear plastic bins and pretty glass jars or vases to put often used items. I'm thinking the more things that can be contained the easier it is categorize in your mind. For example I have a scissor drawer and a marker drawer. Loved watching your process. Love your room! Oh, and I may have an oops, on rewatching I see I might have misunderstood what you said at end of video about the other organizing. Just glean whatever you can from my ramblings. Organized rooms organize my brain. 😁😊

I don't really have enough tabletop space to do lots of bins and jars and such on top, unfortunately. This is so very satisfying. I've been making a bit more of an effort to sew with fabric that I already have, and to actually make things with the scraps I have. The using scraps is going to get harder as I sew more everyday garments. At the moment a lot of what I have to put to use is either quilting cotton or something very close to that. It is so much easier to make little zip pouches or small patchwork things with that kind of fabric. Goodness knows what, if anything, I'll be able to make from stretch fabric or just other woven fabrics with more drape and less structure. I have a pretty small stash of fabric - although I am a pretty slow sewist so I do have to keep reminding myself that I have about a years worth of fabric, rather that thinking I only have 2 cubes worth of fabric. I'm also looking to find a better system for all of the odds and ends - currently they are all in another cube with zip look baggies of things like elastic, or bits of hardware, or a bag full of ribbon etc. I think I need to introduce some more structure to the space I keep them in - I'm considering adding some drawers as it looks like that worked really well here.

The drawers have been so handy -- just really separating everything out so that it's easy to see/easy to find. And yeah, I clearly need to do a lot more stash projects, too!

Currently I have all of my stashed fabrics in bins (since I don't have shelving units). The idea to put your fabrics on bolts is a great idea, and I might give it a try. I've been trying to switch to clear-sided bins, so I can at least see what is in each bin; and label the bins; but put the fabric on bolts would certainly make it easier to find a certain fabric instead of having to go digging through each bin every time. sigh --Lyssa WA, USA

Is there a way that you can start with one small area? There are two issues with getting things sorted -- 1 is decision fatigue. Making decisions takes energy and focus and most people try to do too much at once, burn out, and give up. 2 is momentum. Once you see just a small area looking better, it may help inspire you to do another (small [very small]) area. On the other hand, it's 2020 and if you are struggling just to take care of yourself then that needs to be your focus and good on you! Be well.

Mine is covered with a layer of cotton quilting batting, a layer of ironing board fabric, and cotton canvas on top. Have fun with your new space!

I REMEMBERED!!! Most office multi functional devices can print on card stock! You have to chose it in the printer settings when you go to hit print on your computer.

The printing wasn't what I was worried about, but I wasn't sure how to copy them. But now I have the old pdf, so I'm good!

So, I found your channel a bit ago and I am in love. You are so talented and beautiful! My style of sewing is more on the Disney princess side of things. I was wondering where you got your ‘princess fabrics’ and if you have any tips and tricks for working with them. I really want to get more into sewing and become a non gender conforming prince!
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Thank you! I hate to say this, but the majority of my princess fabrics actually are from the LA Fabric District. My main princess client lived there, and I would tell her what she needed, and she would find it there and send it to me. All my other princess fabrics are actually from Joann's! As far as working with them, I would try to avoid slippery shiny satin, and go with taffetas or matte satin instead - much easier to work with and prettier, imo. (Matte satin is honestly an awesome fabric to work with, overall.) Organza can be tricky, though it's better than chiffon. For both, (honestly for any poly fabric) you will probably want a serger to finish your edges, and one that does a good rolled hem, so you don't have to sew hems on your sheers with your sewing machine.

Question for you! What is costume college? I’m actually in the LA area and I’ve heard a few tubers talk about it but I have no idea how to find Information on it.

I actually have a whole video about that (though the hotel has changed since I made this video, and it's now by lax): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MrpB00JOs9s.html -- basically, it's an extended weekend of classes and dress up events, all focused on costuming.

I have a printer than can print on cardstock. if you have a single copy left, we can re-create this document, I could print off some pages and mail them to you if you would like.

I still don’t understand why you’re keeping all the scraps. They take up so much space. What are you going to use them for?
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
It kind of depends on the size of the scrap. I don't save anything smaller than I could use to make a reticule, unless I have nothing larger of that fabric left, in which case, I save even smaller scraps just in case I need to patch the garment. A lot of people save every bit of cabbage, and I just can't. A lot of what I consider "scraps," though, are pieces that are smaller than a yard.

If you cut it up really small, it can be used as stuffing for pillows or hip pads, etc.

I'm enjoying your videos even though I don't sew. Question: what is a ufo? (other than the alleged alien type) :)

Thank you! A UFO in sewing is an unfinished object, so projects that you started and then abandoned for some reason or other.

Very impresive. I'm surprised that you din't add another shelf into the cubbies for trims so you could get two layers of trims in one cubby without the need to put them in drawers, instead of having the trims along the bottoms of two cubbies with big gaps (stuffed with other stuff?) above them. A suggestion for the book cubbies so you don't "temporarily" stand stuff on the spaces left in front of the books - put a false back in the cubby so that the books all sit almost to the front edge fo the cubby. My sewing room has an entire wall of bookcases (the start of the fiction sequence - there's nowhere else in the houose they will fit) and I end up having to move things to get to the books because I inevitably stand random stuff in the spaces at the front of the shelves (before reorganization: flic.kr/p/2kgByzA and mid Reorganizaion: flic.kr/p/2kV24EV ). I REALLY need to follow my own suggestion and add false backs to the shelves so the books stand forward and leave no space in front for filling with random cra... stuff.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
I did wind up adding in glass shelves to the trims, after the fact. Definitely a better use of space!

i admire the hard work you are doing, however, i am a bit disappointed that you are using the free usps boxes. i don't know if you are a person who sells online and uses those boxes, but my business did. shipping prices keeping going up and unapproved uses of the free boxes are part of the problem (albeit probably a small problem --- just heard your explanation of the po boxes at the end. i can understand your usage of them). what i used was the $1 foam boards from dollar tree that are poster board sized. i cut them to my desired size and got probably 5? out of each one. i cut them to the size of my file cabinet drawers and wrapped my vintage laces around them so they are very easy to see and determine which one i want to use (if i should ever actually get well enough again to craft). just thought i would mention the foam board idea for your own future use and anyone else looking to make their own small "bolts" of fabric. it does look so much neater that way, doesn't it? stuffed animals, tie a ribbon around their necks and hang on a hook above the kallax unit (not so that it looks like they have been "hanged" but that they are just floating on the wall). or maybe put a floating shelf up for them to sit on.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
I only wound up getting about 4 or 5 "new" boxes from the post office. As I mentioned, almost all of these boxes were ones an old roommate abandoned in my garage 2+ years ago.

On the top, you mean? I like them as sentimental items. I did actually move the cubby full of stuffed animals after the end of the video, though. You can see what the final arrangement looks like in the thumbnail picture or on my instagram.
