Using plywood instead of drywall or sheetrock will significantly improve repairing any stucco holes that once had drywall or sheetrock.
There is a reason why this frail system of using drywall for exterior sheathing is no longer used. The sheetrock was and still is too soft.
Often, hitting the nails or tacking the stucco nettings on with staple guns damages the soft paper lining of the drywall.
You can use the stucco you choose for exterior stucco patches like this.
I used Portland cement mixed with three times the amount of sand.
A three-to-one ratio.
The painting should be done at least 28 days after the stucco has been cured.
However, there is same-day stucco, such as Rapid set stucco.
