For anyone attempting repair, LET THE GLUE SIT. It's gotta get tacky. I have been trying to patch a hyplaon sup/boat and it's been a huge pain. But the best results have been with very detailed prep as shown in the video, and waiting for the glue to get tacky and dry a bit before clamping. I applied it too thicc and wet and it didn't dry.

sit how long?

You can actually just paint that stuff on your seams at the first sign of a little bubble leak no clamps and use the board the next day. The stuff works well. :)

Cool Video! Acetone can attack certain types of plastics and paints. It will easily dissolve styrofoam for example. Quite fun to watch. It will also discolor acrylic glass and make it milky and make it crack. It can be used as a solvent and as a stripper for some lacquers but in this case it's main function is to degrease the surface to be glued. Grease is one of the nemesis of glue. The sandpaper is used to roughen up the material and give the glue even more surface to bond to. While not being exactly the same scuba dry suit neck and wrist seals are fixed in a very similar way. Remove old seal, remove old glue, scuff up drysuit and seal, degrease drysuit and seal, apply multiple layer of glue then press together and let it rest. Isopropanol is also a good degreaser but it usually does not attack plastics. I feel that acetone does a better job at degreasing in comparison to isoprop. Don't know about MEK but I heard it's similar to acetone.

Yes, MEK is typically used to dissolve or thing things similar to acetone, it’s just considered slightly stronger, but I’ve never some across any job when acetone didn’t suffice.

I have patched two punctures in an ISUP with that HH 66 cement, 1 of them four years ago......no problems with either hole.

I've got a similar problem and no place to take it for repair. Would like to know how it turned out. Did the repair hold? Did any additional seams split/open? Lastly, how do you generally inflate your inflatable SUP?

Hello. I have done this repair now 4-5 times and it has always been successful. 2 of my SUPs developed more leaks which I was able to fix (apparently due to bad glue). I currently use a combination of a 12v electric pump and the hand pump. Good luck.

I recommend something that isn’t too rough - anything 100-160 grit should work. I had to repair a 2nd iSUP this summer and it also worked great. Good luck!

Hi! I have the same problem with a seam on my inflatable kayak. Did you have another leak on the same seam you fixed after a while? Also, I am curious to know how you selected the HH-66 Vinyl Cement because I am not sure if that works well for marine/water environments. I am planning to use the Weaver Adhesive 3001. My kayak only requires 3.2 psi instead of 15 psi, so I hope it works.

Hello, no it’s been perfect since the repair. I found HH-66 after doing research on how to do repairs. I honestly think the most important step of all is properly cleaning and preparing the surfaces. Good luck!

My wife's Inflatable SUP burst a seam similarly. I wonder if the air expanded in the heat causing this to happen. Anyway, thanks for posting!!

Helpful, I ordered some HH66 glue and thinner to give this a shot after a local shop told me my board is “unrepairable.” It’s a Body Glove SUP and while the board is awesome, the factory glue job was total trash. So, a lot of cleanup at various places but I think it’s possible.

@jnovin

Unfortunately the clamps are 15+ years old. However, they are standard wood working clamps. I created a simple wood strip that I shaped to the edge of the sup to achieve better hold.

Thanks. Any particular tips, I'm about to attempt a repair of a seam with MEK and HH66. Were you worried about getting glue on the inside on the drop stitch?
@campbikeski
@campbikeski 4 года назад
I tried my best to avoid it - but I am sure I did not entirely avoid getting glue on the drop stich. Clean, sand and dry fit before attempting to glue it. The template and testing the vise setup dry was a huge help.

IMHO a tear like that is a factory problem and the vendor should sort out a new one. I bought a damn expensive top of the range Starboard Astro 10yr ago and it never held its PSI. Despite complaining to the vendor it would a cost a fortune to return and get a new one shipped out (only if they found an actually problem) Few years after lots of frustrations… blow out. Massive tear in the seam. Pissed me off.

@campbikeski
@campbikeski Год назад
That’s an excellent question and something I am trying to figure out myself. Unfortunately I don’t have a great answer as I’ve never done it. But, I am thinking about trying with acetone. As long as you can open up a space between the layers you may be able to use acetone to loosen up the old glue. Just be careful not to let it sit on too long. Good luck!

Trying this on a paddle board I got for free with a ripped seam. I let the glue sit for about 3 minutes but didn’t test it to see if it got tacky, and I applied a liberal amount. I hope it works! If not I’ll have to try again!!

I’ve been successful with all but one repair so far. The key things are to clean, little bit of sanding, clean some more, glue (not too much, not too little), and they apply pressure as it dries. I messed up the last part on my last repair and it did not turn out well. Good luck!

How has it held up with use since the repair? Im a bigger guy(280) and my iSUP blew on Canada Day after a 2 hour paddle and left it floating while my Nephew and Dog ran around. It blew out the seam almost the entire length of the iSUP plus a small section on the other side. I think mine is possibly too far gone for a repair that big with a user of my size. Great video though!

I've used that HH 66 to repair two holes on a body glove ISUP one back in 2018 I haven't had issue with either. The cement if it spreads beyond the patch and dries will discolor a little but you will not get it off. I am 6 ft 240 lbs.

Any tips on the glue application ? I seen a BIC video where they put on 3 applications of glue every couple minutes before clamping, did you just do one application and wait couple minutes before clamping ? Have a speedy Starboard Whopper inflatable that has very similar blown seam
@campbikeski
@campbikeski 4 года назад
I roughed it up with sandpaper, applied one liberal coating, and waited a few minutes. It took quite a while for me to apply due to the large rip (maybe 4-5 min). We just went whitewater paddling last weekend and the repair is still holding.
