If you use a 9" grinder with a slitting blade from the other side to a chalk line then you get a clean cut with no slag or rough edge to clean back. I do it all the time, clamp a straight edge to run against is a second method..

Cutting edges should be fully welded not stitched like that. When being used,material and rust will force its way between the cutting edge and the floor of the bucket between the welds and start to bend the floor back up. Hope you don't charge much as won't be long and you will doing all again when the floor is all bent up. False expenses having to do the job twice.

@huckstirred7112 Год назад
Hey now , no need to be insulting . He is obviously not a pro . So if you are lend friendly advice and don't be condescending about it . His welds were ok his cutting was ok . He should have squared the bottom of the bucket using bottle jacks and 4x4s and replaced only 6 inches of the floor with AR 500 plate with 2x2 quarter inch thick angle to tie the sides and the bottom together and triangles with 3 inch legs to fit the back of the bucket . Then cut holes for a bolt in cutting edge so he can swap it out for a tooth bar if needed . and small 2 inch circles of hard face about 2 inches or so apart . I am self employed and done many buckets but I am at 50 years old still learning and will never be an expert

Sorry man, I didn't really understand why he wanted this repair. I understand why you're doing it, but I didn't get the point of replacing it with the exact same kind of steel (unless you put in AR plate and I just missed it). I saw it was a little bent, but it didn't seem to affect the functionality of the bucket. This isn't a criticism, I just don't understand why anyone would replace a slightly out of shape sheet of steel. No doubt, you explained it and I just missed it, but in case you didn't... Was the original not holding dirt? Is he moving liquids? Seems like you could have put the new steel on top of the old steel and it would have made it stronger and more abrasion resistant.

Friendly suggestions, instead of trimming new bottom plate ,that little amount of overhang will actually enhance the corner wear life. Also you responded the cutting edge was mild steel ,you bought it you should know what you bought,,but by the spark pattern from cutting the edge ro length it looked like high carbon steel and who put the tapered edge on the cutting edge?. You might want to extend future cutting edges and build corners out farther to increase bucket cap. and extend cutting edge life. Otherwise great job ,hope you vote pro 2A !!!
