Replace Window Sash Spring Balance - Window Won't Stay Open

You are welcome, Karen. Another one of mine broke a couple of weeks ago. I got warranty replacement coil spring balances and replaced them. After you replace a few of them, it's easy.

I was able to remove the coil balance and ordered the replacement parts. Thanks to you, I feel more confident to finish the job.

You are welcome, Robert. I'm the original owner of the windows, I got the parts for free. The rep told me they weren't allowed to tell people how to replace the spring. I suppose a spring replacement didn't work out for someone, maybe after some advice from a customer rep. I also recently replaced all of the weather stripping on the windows. I was able to get that for free. The hardest part was figuring out how much I needed. There are 5 different sizes for each window. The windows are about 20 years old and the weather stripping was going to soon fail. I know this because there are two windows in the house that the previous owner replaced. They were an earlier version of the windows we have. Those are 25 years old. When I removed some of that weather stripping from those some of it was crumbling and just fell apart. I made a video on how to do that too. Go to the channel, find the playlists and there one for window repair. I will likely be replacing the glass in one of them in the near future and will put up a video for that too.

Good to hear you persevered and figured out a way to do that. Thanks for taking the time to describe a solution to replacing double balances. I'm sure you it will be helpful for anyone trying to figure out how to do that.

Mine was under warranty, I got the part from the manufacturer. If yours is not under warranty you might try Swissco.

When I talked to the American Craftsman rep about warranty parts, they told me to try Swisco for parts that are no longer supported. I've never had to use Swisco, let us know how it works out. Link to website www.swisco.com/cl/Door_Window-Replacement-Hardware

@@Know-How-Now The coil spring balances from Swisco were perfect. Fitting was a bit more complex than show as the sash needs supporting whilst the stays are removed and simple home made tools to twist the sash break on and off was needed.
