In this video we discuss replacing the mechanical fan with an electric - v6 - Efan on the Dodge Ram 1500 trucks with the 5.7L HEMI. We discuss if cooling is effected by removing the mechanical fan and installing a electric fan out of a v6 model ram 1500. The cooling has not been affected so far and the air conditioning has actually become cooler with the electric fan conversion.
RAM has decided to completely remove the mechanical fan on the 2019 RAM due to parasitic drag and loss. This also eliminates the noise that mechanical fans are known for. RAM has obviously decided that the electric fan can be used and still be able to cool the engine under heavy towing.

I agree with you 100%… I did this after seeing several videos and in-depth research on this modification, the one thing that I did miss was turning off the MDS increases heat! The fan is I’ll not cycle often enough to bring the heat down

I watched the video when you replaced your cluch fan. That was the first thing I noticed when I popped the hood of my 2019, no clutch fan.

Guys buy the same year of V6 fan as your ruck year. I have a 2012 so I bought a 2012 V6 fan and the plug matches location to location. Drop in a 180 Tstat works like a charm. I have a Bully Dog Tuner with no reprogramming of the fan turning on or off. BBK Headers, Catch Can, Cabin Air filter ( Great Mod), Lowered Air bags, Spohn suspension links, Crown Suspension springs, I tow a 25ft Travel Trailer. No problems...

Nice list of mods! Glad you don't have any cooling issues too! Only thing is guys shouldn't buy a 2013+ V6 fan because they changed the plug to an oval looking plug in 2013 and it won't fit out hemi trucks without some wiring. 2009-2012 V6 fan will fit 2009-2018 HEMI trucks though!

so dukesky no need for reprogram the ecu, just a 180 thermo and the electric fan ? i was thinking i need to program it since the fan wasnt present and now electrical. also when your in stand still the temp doesnt spike ? i just asking because it it works like u say im gonna be busy this weekend then lmao.

I started with the "No programing" config and monitored the way it was cooling. Like John says it will go up to 222 degrees then the fan will turn on and cool the truck quickly. Easy to live with. I tow a travel trailer and wanted a smaller temp window to cool my truck. I just upgraded my tuner from a Bullydog to a Diablo. Changed settings to 205 and fan does turn on less now.

thanks for the update, i did the changes to the truck is truly a big change, dont have the big roar when she starts and on the cooling side its nice since i've seen improvements on my mpgs maybe by 1 up to 2 and the ac feels 10x better. hp wise u can feel the that the motor really wants to go.. i haven't dyno yet but should be better than before. i used a out side thermo controller relay to see how it goes... well trail and error that's how things work lol

I wonder if the 2019 electric fan will be compatible with our trucks. I might have to take a look when they start hitting the lots more. I'd like to see if the plug is going to be like the 2013+ V6 fan or like the one that you put in. I'm really enjoying your videos. Thanks for taking the time to do them. They are really informative and I have learned quite a bit.

Thanks Tim for the support on the channel! The V6 fan is plenty powerful and I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try! Mine has been working great and my A/C is even cooler now in stop and go traffic on 110* days.

So why does the v6 have an electric fan and the v8 have the mechanical fan? There has to be a reason the Hemi has a clutch fan.

The operating temp debate is always a fun one. I have an 07 1500 with the Hemi, stock everything. Hits roughly 215F before cools back down to 203-204, fans kick on when they’re supposed to. Bumper to bumper gets a little warmer, sitting closer to 210F. Unless it’s a race truck or you care significantly about performance, it’s just fun to mess with that stuff. I’ve certainly considered a V6 fan but ultimately decided it’s not worth the money for me when my truck runs just fine stock. Even when hauling, temps sit rock solid 203-204. Considering a 180F thermostat, but until my 203F fails, 🤷🏻‍♂️

hey John. you mentioned about removing your stock clutch fan, and shroud. To replace it with the electronic fan, but you never mentioned if your engine was v6 or v8.. I was wondering if the oem v6 fan you installed, would work for a 2010 v8, 5.7 hemi ???

I recently purchased an electric cooling fan from a Dodge dakota to replace the stock clutch fan on my 08' Ram Hemi. It appears it has all the same locations for the mounting bolts and thee is a plug already mounted on the shroud it came on (3 blade male plug), however, am I missing components to make this work in my truck? I dont see any other plugs in my truck engine comparment that this would plug into? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the details on the fan you used. I am going to order one in a few days for my 2011 project 5.7. I found one at a local scrapyard for over 3x what you paid, and new is only a few bones more so I am going new. I was on the fence, even after the other video, thank you for the follow up and answer's. Great work on the RAM series of vids too, high quality work sir.

Thanks for showing the specs for the 2019 @5:08 where they eliminate the fan clutch. I was wondering what the hype is about deleting the fan clutch. But I've also read where ppl say you have to have a tuner to tell the ecu when to turn on the electrical fan. I don't have a tuner yet, so guess I won't be doing this until I have the tuner.

No worries! I actually ran the electric fan for a few weeks without a tuner. It still turns on but if you don't have your A/C turned on temps will creep up to 220* in stop and go until the PCM turns on the fan. With A/C turned on it usually keeps the fan on so it stays cool.

I Run both. High humidity and desert conditions with steep hills while pulling a trailer. HD Clutch fan , deep in a full shroud, V6 electric fan with lower programming set point. If one fan dies like mine did today you will be grateful. If you're fan is roaring it is busted. It is supposed to slip quite a bit when first starting and engage more when hot. A clutch fan doesn't pull hp like he's saying. Yes, it's true that fully engaged, a clutch fan can take Up to 20 hp to run. But that's waaay up there and a clutch fan is always cycling so the actual average is quite low. The tests he is referring to is dyno cell testing peak hp for drag racing. E-fans eat hp too. They don't run for free. Unless you're drag racing. If you put a full throttle disconnect relay on the E fan and realize that a properly working clutch fan won't even be engaged with that much air flowing at speed. External plate cooler for the transmission is a great way to increase cooling capacity and remove the possibility of getting pink goo for transmission fluid if it were to leak . An override switch for the E fan relay mounted inside the cab to put full juice to it when at slow speeds is nice too. Replacing the two hundred bends per transmission line , on the factory lines that wrap around the catalytic converters is a big help too So the insurance is definitely worth it. My truck would have taken a beating otherwise. As soon as it started to activate the E fan all the time I drove to the parts store and picked up a new HD fan clutch. Had it installed in no time flat and nothing got beat on. Aloha

The 2019 Ram without the thermostatic fan has a very different radiator installed to compensate for the loss of constant flow the rotational thermostatic fan generated. You must remember that the thermostatic fan has a fluid coupling that controls when the fan is actually fluid connected or freewheeling. To remove the thermostatic fan from the earlier models should only be done when the vehicle is used for off-road operation such as drag racing. The dual fan operation is for optimum cooling. Ask yourself the question, "what if the fuse blows or short happens while you are out driving?" Now, you don't have but one fan now, get it? As with me, I have my favorite 2014 Dodge Ram R/T which came with HD cooling for towing. When I start my truck up in the morning, I don't hear a loud roaring noise coming from my engine compartment. Reason, the fluid clutch is freewheeling quietly no noise. If you have loud noise during a cold start upon startup, then you have a problem with your fluid coupling engaging while your engine is cold. Lastly, I would not put a fiberglass flex fan on a gas lawn mower much less my prized truck. The rivets come apart and shatter sending blades of fiberglass into your radiator and everything else. Take the advise of a lot of us from the late 60s and 70s muscle car era who removed their thermostatic clutch fans for the so called popular loud fixed blade flex fan and drive in the street with all the loud roaring, engine didn't keep a constant temperature, and subsequently flex fan comes apart when you are in no mans land. Frustrated, you get back home and repair all the damages that were done & now replace your favorite High Performance thermostatic clutch fan assembly back on your vehicle and you notice an immediate difference in constant engine coolant temperatures along with less irritating noise.

Electric fans have been out forever and the majority of the vehicles on the road rely on electric fan cooling. Not scared of a fuse blowing or fan motor going as its rare. Also it would only be an issue if you were dead stuck in traffic. Even city driving the fan never comes on with the supporting mods. The jeep with the same 5.7L engine has an electric fan from similar years so not a valid point. Been in 112* desert heat and still sitting at 185* which is cooler than the stock 203* operating temp.

I used a SUPERCHIPS 3845. When I first bought it last October, there was no setting for changing the fan temp. They have since updated it and It has 3 settings for the fan: STOCK (222 degrees), 192, and 180. I chose the 192 setting. I have a 190 t-stat, and once the engine hit's 192 as it always does before the t-stat opens, the fan comes ON and never turns off again, since the t-stat closes again around 188. I believe the temp has to drop 8 degrees before the fan will shut off. I ordered a 180 t-stat; that should solve this. I must say that even with the electric fan running, the truck is still quieter and a lot more peppy. I have not yet changed to the V6 fan yet, (just running the factory A/C fan), and it has not gone over 192. Temperatures here are around 48 during the day right now. I will do the V6 fan before summer for sure, since it has a shroud and looks a lot better.

I'm wondering what would be the best choice for someone that wants to keep the truck mostly stock. I just want to see MPG improvements for the most part and don't really want to get a tuner but I want the electric fan to coll the engine properly. Can I just swap the fan with the electric without having to do any tuning?

You can swap the fan without getting a tuner. Only thing is the fan wont come on until about 220* with the a/c off which is slightly warmer than typical operating temps. It won't overheat. If you run the a/c the fan will come on sooner and keep temps closer to the 205* mark where they usually are with stock thermostat

So I'm very interested in doing the efan swap on my 2013 ram sport. But I don't want to change my thermostat to a 180 degree station. And I don't want to take my grill shutters off. If I do the swap do I need to change the fan settings with a tuner or will every still work properly? If I do have to change the fan setting with a tuner what am I changing and to what temperatures and I changing the settings to? Also if I change the settings do I have to change anything else for the shutters or will they work right?? Please answer I have done a tone of reading but nothing is very clear.

Thanks for the support. You don't "NEED" a tuner necessarily you can do it other ways. You can but an adjustable fan controller from summit for $60 and wire that in. It will control the fan at whatever temperature you choose and hot rod guys have used these for years. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Isn't the stock fan a clutch fan? And since it's a clutch fan isn't there no drag when it's disengaged? I don't think mine engages very often. It doss first thing in the morning like you said for like 10 seconds.

It does have a clutch on it but if you notice it is ALWAYS spinning with the engine running albeit not full speed/lockup. Also the added mass of keeping the clutch in motion. There was a noticeable difference removing the stock mechanical fan setup in the truck's response.

Boosted2k I never noticed that it constantly spins. I'll check that out. It is loud when it's fully engaged! I want to do this mod, being in Texas I want my a/c to be good this summer. It works great now not sure if I want to mess with it.

Guaranteed your A/C will be even cooler with this fan. Mine was in dead stop traffic in 110*. Made a noticeable difference.

The thing that I like about the mechanical fans is the roar sound they produce, especially the big diameter ones that are on buses and big trucks.

Yes sir it will fit the 2018 also but make sure you order a v6 fan from a 09-12. They changed the plug on the 13+ v6 fan to some weird one 👍

Nope you just flash the PCM with the tuner and then you unplug it and can leave it at home or in your glovebox. Once you load the tune it is programmed until you change it again with the handheld tuner.

Without the clutch fan doesn't the electric fan only come on if air conditioning is on? So if you're not using the AC how would your engine get cooled?

It will come on if temps hit 220* or you get a tuner and reprogram the fans to come on whenever you like

Yeah only difference you will notice is temps will creep up to 220* in traffic if you don't have the A/C on before the fans will turn on. Stock thermostat is 203* so temps will hover around here normally.

Hey John Great videos as always! I want to do this mod on my 2018 ram limited but I'm not sure if I could do the tune as I think my pcm is Locked from factory.... can you confirm? If I change the thermostat to the 180° do I really need the tune? I'm assuming that's just to tell the fan when to come on correct? Is 220° harmful? Tx again brother! Great vids!

Thanks for the support! I believe they have already cracked the 2018 PCMs and you can get it unlocked and tuned but double check! You can change the thermostat without a tune but some have reported a CEL in cold weather but the data on that isn't 100% certain. 220 is on the warmer side but doesn't hurt anything. stock thermostat isn't fully open until 203* anyways. If you delete your active grille shutters the fan will rarely come on anyways. Any "loss" in aerodynamics from removing the shutters is gained back with the removal and drag of the mechanical fan so I didn't see any downside to be honest.

Serems like a pretty obvious question I know... but.. I wonder if they would care as long as it's getting proper cooling.... Surry dude but I think I may have answered my own question. Any idea what the V6 fan is rated at? The 2019 is 850watt but curious to see how it compares to the V6. I really want get the V6 fan but worried about towing and the mountain passes here in Idaho. Without the clutch fan and only V8 efan it does get hot(don't recommend). Have to have the mechanical and V8 efan to keep it cool.

Smtx 512 remove most of the shutters and then it will be fine. Leave the 2 top and bottom shutters so it doesn’t throw an CEL

Hey BoostedMotorsports my truck goes to 212 degrees and then cools to to about 194 degrees then starts to go back up. You think I would still need a tuner to adjust the fan cut on?

Is that with the mechanical fan deleted? Stock thermostat fully opens at 203* so your temps aren't far off.

You could do that too as long as you don't do any heavy towing or live somewhere super hot cause that fan is a bit smaller than the V6 version. With that being said though there are guys in Texas heat running the v8 efan without issues

What's the point of the 180 thermostat mod? Isn't 180° to low for the engine? I don't understand how it works.

It keeps things cooler which is better for performance. They run the higher 203* thermostat from the factory for emissions reasons but it hurts performance with the engine that hot.

Best thing about this mod is the engine is so much quiet with out that dumb mechanical fan spinning 100% of the time!

If the fan is loud it's busted or you're going slow and it's hot. It's not supposed to stay locked at anytime. An override switch for an electric fan to run full time in slow hot conditions works like a charm. I have dual alt and batt system so low rpm isn't an issue with drawing that much juice. Plus it's always good for welding up busted stuff on the trail.

I have electric fans on my 800hp cummins turbo diesel with no problems towing. People argue all the time but electric fans are WAY better for cooling in stop and go traffic. Mechanical fans must rev the engine up to move enough cfm to cool itself. So most electric fans move around 6000cfm of air and most mechanical fans move around 9000cfm @ 4000RPM's. People then say you can't have electric for towing but I know electric is better because you move more air at a stop AND on the highway you shouldn't need a fan at all. There is around 6500CFM per square foot against your truck @ 65mph, that's far more than electric or manual could ever do.
