Replacing a Bumpside Ford F100 heater core in a matter of minutes! 1967 through 1972

In this video I removed and replaced the factory brass and copper heater core in my 1971 Ford F100 Ranger XLT with an aftermarket aluminum unit. But this should be the same process for most 1967 through 1972 ford pickup trucks, including F250 and F350 pickups. So long as they are non - air conditioned machines like mine! AC equipped pickups are a bit more difficult. I hope this video not only helps you replace the heater core in your bumpside Ford rig but that you also may get some entertainment value as well! As always, thanks fore watching!

Literally used this today to figure out where that damn clip went that held the core in while I was cleaning up and sorting out my ‘68 dually. Thanks for having done this … ohh … a year or more ago.

Just did the heater core on my 72 F250 today. For those who are about to tackle this I recommend taking out the cardboard glove box liner if you have dealer installed A/C. It makes reaching the blend door cables a bit more easy. Also the foam that's included with the heater core is adhesive backed. That way you can line the outside of the core for a snug fit helping the inlet and outlet protrude out the firewall a bit more. Thanks for this video it helped a ton!

Hell, I admit it, I am a ford kinda old man and those tubes, I wound up cutting the old ones off, and making a splice to make reach as it is just something I missed when trying to put back in... its been like a while ago as I am seventy three now and musta been your age when I changed a few. It was a here and there thing. I bought fords cause easy to work on (no pulling a fender to get inner fender off to just change heater motor,) and cheap cause the other kids were very proud of their parts. I used them in the logging trade and no matter how bad that you treated them they went to work everyday and when the engine would rattle, some ninety weight (thinking pattern in those days) and get another month or so out then steal the wife's car and pull the engine and slam it in and get her a new engine on the way cause I earned the change and she had friends for a couple days inconvenience. So damn easy to work on and cheap.... wrecking yards full and so parts were cheap. I could buy that rig that your leaning against for less than two thousand dollars and it was a four speed v8 posi track with other creature features. Even the four wheel drives were only three hundred more. and it came with their best tire and wheel, before factory mags. I got three at a auction in nevada when I went down to buy a cummins 855 and needed something to haul it back it so threw a bid in on the pickup I saw, didn't know it was a package deal but for five hundred apiece and one year old with sixty thousand miles (I didn't know it was possible for that many miles either) but I started it and it ran good so bought it and found myself a thousand light but made it ok. I took one into town and hung a sign on it for eight hundred and a guy bought if from me while I was hanging the sign up. Feeling better got a tow bar and a engine on a pallet to go home in washington state. Never missed a lick and we made it home in two days..... yeah I miss those days bad

I've got a '67 F100 I'm gonna do this on. After driving it around for a while on any day I'd think it was overheating because the temp gauge isn't the most accurate, but it would rise a little above halfway and it would smell like a trash fire in the cab. I replaced the thermostat and water pump and still had the same issue but now I'm thinking it's that old heater core. I think I'll end up going though and updating the entire cooling system though and see what happens after that.

i get these for free all the time or real cheap i have a shit ton of parts for these and complete clean project trucks rust free just new parts are expensive way more then chevy i have both and there is a big different like a new dash pad is 54 bucks for my 68 chevy but for a 70 ford it is 350 bucks like what i did was get a 68 ford class c motor home it has wiper delay cruise control air condition tilt wheel full gauges with tak roses in the trim in the interior really like the door panels very fancy chrome bumper look new on the front got it for free running and driving with a 428 c-6 trans i will rebuild the 428 then put it in when i get some other projects dun. i get a lot of nice rigs for free all the time like so far this year i got 4 crate engine 454 450 hp with the 02xx 400 turbo good to 800 hp for free from 6,000 to 58,000 miles on them all run perfect my high boy is nice with a 390 in it 70 3/4 ton dana 60/80 lockers has tool box on side rust free clean body got it for 250 bucks and it is a ranger xlt that don't matter to me plus the box was full of parts

If you ever take Big Orange down to Texas. And you in the ranch land between Dallas and San Antonio with a for sale sign on her. She would be sold within a couple of hours. Because she is a workhorse. And she got personality in my Sci-fi book. The main character drives a 1968 F-100 long bed. And it was bought brand new. And it has been kept brand new. Except for the engines. And the normal parts wearing out and need replacement. Otherwise, she has the roll bar. The driving lights and 31x10 tires. And the maxflow mufflers, And a cd-player. I hope you find a Jeep J-10 or 20 with a blown engine. But a wrecked dodge ram. And make a resto-mod!!!!

I’ve got my water heater set to 140 in the house. My wife says the dishwasher has never worked better; don’t get all hot & bothered I’m the one that ‘does the dishes’. I’d say doing a heater core is one place where getting it warmed up before you work on it doesn’t usually apply... however I am open to input, does it make the hoses easier to remove? Thanks for the video.

I'll agree with Mortske. Working on a hot, pressurised engine cooling system can be a bad thing. I was working on an old 1970 Chevy sedan. I thought the lower radiator hose was leaking at the clamp. It was actually the water pump and antifreeze was coming out the weep hole and running down hose to lower clamp at radiator. Anyhoo, the engine was at operating temp and thankfully not running when I had the bright idea to try to loosen the clamp and adjust it. With somewhere under15lbs of pressure, that lower radiator hose just flew off, dumping hot antifreeze all over my boot before I could even react. All the antifreeze was on the ground and I got to spend another $16 for 2 more gallons of antifreeze concentrate. But thankfully my boot was waterproof and the 180 degree fluid only felt really nice and warm. My freezing foot felt good for about 3 minutes. Yeah, good times...
