Replacing A Hydroboost Unit - EricTheCarGuy
www.ericthecarguy.com/
This is actually the first one of these that I replaced, it's a little more complicated than a regular vacuum booster but not by much. I looked up the procedure for installing the system and it said to crank the engine without starting it, if I were to do it again I'm not sure I would bother with this because the fluid didn't seem to flow until I revved the engine past 2500, once I did this things started to work normally.

A couple of tips from a long-time mechanic. When youre doing anything under the dash? Take 10 minutes to remove the seat- you will create SO much more room for yourself it changes everything. Second- always have some kind of penetrating fluid on hand, most guys like PB Blaster or Deep Creep- my preferred brand is Aerokroil- amazing stuff. Be very generous about wetting down any exposed threads before unbolting everything- things come apart twice as fast when the threads have some lube and you'll be able to undo many bolts by hand that otherwise would have required the socket wrench. Stay safe out there-

Had to replace the hydroboost on my 2001 Safari van. After watching this video it was quite clear how to accomplish replacing it. Thanks for posting this. Local shop wanted $700+ to do the job. I did it for the cost of the unit thanks to you!
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 13 лет назад
@fastvpbt1 The videos I make are based on the vehicles that come into my shop so for me to fill your request the same car has to come in with the same problem, not likely in the near future, if one does come in I'll shoot the video if I have the time. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the video! I'm converting to a hydroboost because my aggressive cam wasn't giving me too much vacuum. This was the best info on hydroboosts I could find! Great work!

Thank you for taking the time to make and share this video! I have 96 3500 truck I need to do this in in the morning. I put it off a year because getting to the clip on the rod and pedal under the column is nowhere as easy as this was. The engineer that designed it needs to be beat with a break line hose....twice! I hear dropping the a bit is the key to getting in there to the clip. I'm not sure how to do it but I will just start removing bolts and figure it out as I go. Thanks again!

Rather old video now, but still very valid. I replaced a Hydroboost unit yesterday on a Savana 2500. This video shows a slightly different unit and orientation to the engine bay, but proved very handy in assessing the repair prior to taking it on. Total job took about an hour and a half and a few busted knuckles. Not too shabby for never doing one before.

Eric TCG, thank you for the video and especially for showing so much detail. I'm currently on a problem with the brakes dragging on my 2003 Astro. After 10 miles they seize up and overheat. I needed to see the mounts of the master cylinder and the hydroboost connection to the brake pedal before taking the wrenches to anything. Your video covers it very nicely. Your work is greatly appreciated. BTW, the bungee cords are a great idea. It beats the pieces of 2x4 lumber I used to jam in there to keep the hoses out of the way.

I noticed what you said about the power steering noise, and I also had a noisy power steering pump. So I took the cap off the reservoir and did what you said, and now it makes a lot less noise and works smoother. The steering wheel doesn't jerk around at near-lock anymore either. I thought that whine was normal. I guess I was wrong. Thanks, Eric.

@JohnnyDesaint You may still have air in the system, the air in this van didn't purge till I revved the engine up to almost 3K in order to get the brakes and power steering to work. In your case however if that does not work I might be looking to the lines to see if there is a restriction somewhere as it will result in the sam problem and possibly cause your performance issue. Lastly make sure you used the correct fluid, in the case of this van it had to be power steering fluid.

@partyboyperk You might want to check the actual fuel pressure to see if there is enough. Even though the pump runs it may not be putting out enough volume to run the engine. Most fuel injected systems need 30-40 psi to run.
@ericthecarguy

@gripracer Space consideration is the primary like in this van but they also use it with diesels because they don't produce a lot of intake vacuum.

@ericthecarguy 13 лет назад
@MoToRPoLLuTioN Sounds like 2 separate problems. As for the steering make sure your tire psi is correct. As for the brakes I would do an inspection to make sure everything is working right, I sometimes spin the wheels while they are up in the air and apply to brakes to see if they are working correctly. I can say that some pads are made better than others, cheep pads sometimes act that way.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 13 лет назад
@jhacksim First there are several types of vacuum in a gasoline engines but the most commonly used vacuum is intake vacuum. Intake vacuum is produced naturally and is the reason the air fuel mixture is drawn into the combustion chamber to begin with, in short without it the engine would not run.
