Replacing a Window Screen 5-Steps

Replacing a window screen is an easy project and should take a novice 1 hour or less for the first window and even less as you move on to other screens.
Tools Needed
Utility knife
Flat headed screwdriver
Scissors
Spline rolling tool
Screen spline
Screen
Replacing a Window Screen Screen Type
When replacing a window screen is one thing but which type of screening should you use? I typically use what ever was in the broken screen so all the windows match. This is not always the case an I have swapped out materials, especially for screen doors, more on that below.
There are there basic types of screens:
Fiberglass
Aluminum / Bronze
Pet or Shade Screen
Fiberglass screening is the most common. It is flexible and easy to install, in fact if you make a mistake during the install you can remove the spline and start over as the fiberglass screening material does not have a crimp fold memory.
Tip: when installing fiberglass screening ensure that you keep the screen taunt and wrinkle free. Ive accomplished this by using clamps, a helper or adding weight to hold the excess screening hanging off the far end - tight! don't install the fiberglass too tight or you can warp the screen.
Aluminum screening is stronger, ore durable and my preference for screen porches. Unlike fiberglass screen, does dent and has a memory once dented, dinged or crimped. This means yo have one-shot of installing it, if you screw up , you'll need to start with fresh material.
Pet or Sun Screening has a thicker grid which restricts light, and like fiberglass is flexible to work with. This is helpful with keeping the sun out and helps reduce fabric and carpet fading. It is also a stronger material than fiberglass and aluminum screening, which makes it a fantastic screen of use in screen doors and in places often damaged by pets.
Replacing a Window Screen Replacing a Screen Steps
Step 1:
Remove the screen from the window frame and place it on a flat surface. Use a flat head screw driver to pry loose the rubber spline [roping] in the window screen frame. Pull this spline out of all four sides /grooves, that line the perimeter of the screen frame.
Discard the damaged screen and evaluate if you can reuse the spline. Dry battle spline should be replaced.
Tip: Use a pair of clamps or tape the hold the screen frame flat and secure while working.
Step 2:
Align your new screen over the frame opening. You can either use scissors to cut your screening material s so the it overlaps 1" on either side, or simply leave it long and overlap all sides, trimming later.
Step 3:
With the convex roller [pointy] of your spline roller, start in one corner of the screen frame and roll the screen into the grove of the frame. Go easy and do one side only then move to the next step.
Replacing a Window Screen Step 4:
Insert and roll spline into the grooved screen and screen frame. Depending on the screen frame you may need to cut the spline into four sections for it to fit lengthwise in the grooves.
Once the spline is installed, repeat Step 3 and 4 on adjoining screen frame groove. Work in this fashion until all four sides are installed.
Remember to hold the screen under pressure to keep the material taut, and prevent wrinkles or folds.
Step 5:
With a flat tip screwdriver, gently push the spline down, into the grooves in all four corners.
Using a sharp utility knife, trim the excess screen by cutting alone the spline. Hold the screen taut as you cut with the knife.
Replacing a Window Screen Cost
If a Pro was going to do this project for you they would charge approximately $75.00 per window in labor and approximately $15.00 in materials.
Once you purchase the spline roller you can plan on doing these repairs yourself for $10.00 per window screen. You can do this project yourself and save some money!

From personal experience, here are three mistakes that a clutz (like me) should watch out for on the first screen: 1. Make sure you are doing the right side of the screen (the wrong side also has grooves, but the spline won't really fit into them without much effort....). 2. Make sure your screen is laid out the proper way to make the best use of screen material. Remember: the roll in only so long, so turn the screen (probably sideways), so that you can use each roll for as many screens as possible. 3. Double check which end of the roller you are using. If you use the sharp end (that looks like a pizza cutter), you will not be able to push the spline in (but you WILL be able to cut and ruin the screen material.....). The grooved end works. Good luck! This job is easier than I imagined. I saved $450 by doing our ten windows myself.

For those of you like me who decided on a whim to replace a screen that’s been needing to be replaced for months and don’t want to do to the store, a quarter also works as well to get the crease and then use a mullet or butt of a screwdriver to get the spline in. Could make a $50 or $60 profit doing this. Thanks for the video. Didn't know it was that easy to replace a screen. Home Depot doesn't sell a full completed one and they stopped doing screen repairs and installations. Lowes had me on hold and wanted me to call another number they gave me. Watching this gives me confidence because they sell a kit that has all the materials you mentioned at home depot.

As a professional window manufacturer, I usually have something to correct in a RU-vid video but this was spot on for aluminum screen. I have some tricks for getting the right tension on fiberglass screen (too tight and you can bow the sides and create a twist in the frame) but this was exactly how we do our aluminum screens.
@joeholland428
@joeholland428 5 лет назад
Adam Oliver ok so give me some pointers for fiberglass screen adam, i taped the frame to the floor and worked my way around the frame applying light tension to the screen when i got to the fourth side but when i put the screen in it was still pulled in a little in the center on the long sides.
@SolasChristusMinistry
@SolasChristusMinistry 5 лет назад
It takes a little practice but if you have the frame flat on a table and the fiberglass screen wire on top, the first and second sides are just a matter of keeping the wire straight and as smooth as possible. When I move onto the second and third sides, just the action of the spline being rolled into the channel creates tension on the screen when it’s already rolled in on the opposite and adjacent sides. To keep from putting too much tension, I actually press the screen to the table on the inside of the frame (approximately 1/4”) and follow in front of the roller while continuing to hold the screen down inside to actually create a little slack that the spline will take up as you roll without making it too tight. This is hard to explain without a video so if you have questions about my explanation just ask. But basically what I want to do is instead of pulling the screen tight as I’m rolling on the last two sides (this will make the screen too tight as you roll it in because you are tightening it even more as it is rolled into the channel.) I want to create an even amount of slack in front of the roller and I do this on the inside of the frame but pushing it down to the table.
@SolasChristusMinistry
@SolasChristusMinistry 5 лет назад
And then for those times that it doesn’t work as planed I make sure I buy 100 ft. Rolls of screen wire. Lol

Pro-tip: #1: Do not try to get the old spline out from the middle of a groove, or from a corner where it has been kept continuous. Look at the corners (with a flashlight if need be). At least ONE of those corners will have ends that you can get a small screwdriver under. Pro-tip #2: After you're done, hold the frame, spline-side up, at a low angle and see if any of the spline is high, or not fully seated. (View this from all four sides.) I saw this after my first re-screening and tucked those areas down with a flat-head screwdriver, held at a diagonal angle that just covered the width of the groove. I don't know if using a screwdriver will damage the spline material, but my screen had grooves that weren't fully uniform on all four sides, and I had to make do with what I had (in other words, the spline roller didn't work well on two sides). Pro-tip #3: If you intend to keep the spline material continuous around corners, know that the spline roller will not get near enough to the corner to do the tuck properly--use a flat-head screwdriver for that.

Awesome video. Love the close ups where you can really see the process. Other videos are awful and don’t show you what it should look like. Very helpful! Time to get to work

I have tried replacing screens before in the past and it didn’t go so well. The key was pushing the screen into the groove before trying with the rubber spline. This was so easy! Thank you so much for making this video!

Just watched this video after my dog decided he can now open a window and go through the screen. I love fresh air at night and couldn’t imagine having to shut my bedroom window. So I went to Lowes and spent $15. Came home and did the whole thing in 20 minutes (at night). Thank you for helping me fix something I had no idea I could do on my own!

Thanks for the video. I am going to try it on my patio door. It has broken at the edge for quite sometimes. Bugs sneak in easily make me not want to open the patio door

No crap, straight to the point, explained the five steps clearly. Now I'm off to the shop to get a screen roller. Thanks Rob.

Thank you !!! Just did my screen for $12 and took me about 15 minutes. My screen was in horrible shape. Huge Holes everywhere and the flies were coming in my house. Now I can feel the breeze without the stress of bugs.
