I replaced my carb on the same model as yours and my choke was sticking(like yours) after the replacement. I found that on the replacement carb there is a small pin that the throttle cable is hitting and keeping the choke from opening. on the old carb the return spring is not covered but the new carb is designed a bit different and has a stop pin that gets in the way of the choke cable. I'm gonna file it down abit and hope it works better. you may want to check to see if your problem is the same.

Exactly same issue here. Sometimes it just a matter of engaging the blades and poof..chug chug Im dead. 😡 Ive been told not to run ethanol gas, but it was to late I had already killed mine. Im guessing ethanol gas gummed up my carburetor. (Ive already replaced everything else. ) so Ill be draining fuel (cause now i dont know whats in it other then 3 yrs age😒) and a new filter just because. Fingers crossed it changes things cause im to old to be walking behind 24” all summer😩. Thanks for this vid….looks easy to follow. (Later…gotta go cut grass rite now🤦🏻‍♀️🤣)

Ethanol is fine as long as you don’t leave it sit unused like over winter. It absorbs moisture and will cause corrosion. I always run straight gas in my small engines and also put Stabil in my 2 cycle gas because I don’t use it up very fast. Good luck.

Buy OEM. I had to add 3 small M3 washers on the linkage-carb join because it was hitting a pin. OEM carb is like $200. The copycats you can get them online for $20. You get what you pay for.

Thank you! I'm going to try to just get a new carb and do it myself. Old gas from last year I think did it in

Old gas can gunk them up for sure. I use Stabil in gas I don't use often (2 stroke gas for chain saws, and also my bass boat that goes out maybe once/year. Take care.

This dang ethanol gas is killing our mowers! Is that an Oil filter I see? Great job done on replacing the carb. Have a great day!

Carb change a success, motor fix a failure. lol Yeah, that's an oil filter. That stupid thing. I have another just like it that smokes like a steam engine, so I thought I'd go get that one going after this to 'cheap out' and have a bee wagon puller. I went down there and it wouldn't start, rats ate the wires all up. So I figure, I got this, I ripped all the wires out and just wired it up direct - no safety crap, and it fired up and killed every mosquito within a half mile, and fouled the plug. I went and bought a plug and when I got back I forgot to turn the gas off, so the cylinder was full of fuel and it wouldn't even turn over. So, I got pissed and put both mowers on facebook marketplace "free to a good home" I had about 15 messages in 30 minutes. So they gone! Some poor feller picked them up and he said he would tinker with them and get one going. I hope so, he looked like he needed some better times. So the next day I found me a 27HP Cub Cadet with a 54" deck for $400 and it starts right up and runs. The deck needed some work though, so I already spent about $300 on parts for it. lol Take care Mr. CB.

This may sound like a silly suggestion, remove the gas cap, start the mower to see if this resolves the issue. With the mower picking up dust and dirt while you're mowing the venting hole on the gas cap may be clogged/restricted. If this works simply replace the gas tank cap. Don't try to bore holes into the cap, if you do, it may pull dirt directly into the gas tank as it's venting.

I’ve had that issue on ATVs before and it takes a bit to build a vacuum. This thing surged almost immediately.

Too bad it was still messing up. I took that same motor out of the same tractor and put in a slightly newer version for my dad. The guy told me it was seized but it just needs a head gasket and a new float seal in the carb. Good luck with it.👍

Yeah, it's the wierdest thing. I never saw one do that before unless the choke was stuck or something. New carb and it basically did the same thing. I fixed it though. Sold it and another like it for free. Bought me a 27HP twin cyl cub cadet for $400 that runs good. lol Take care Brian and thanks for watching and commenting.

I just had a problem with the same new carb you put on.. look at the choke side of the new carb it is not a full circle, the throat is different size. They actually have 2 different carbs for the cv15s ..
@Mike-su8si
@Mike-su8si Год назад
Well im putting a cv491s carburetor onto the cv15s because it works better but usually one carburetor fits multiple engine models so it is for Kohler anyways i think it'll work out

I had a feeling that wasn't going to fix it based on the sputtering. after researching the same issue on an older (1996) Simplicity with the same 15HP Kohler that hasn't been used in over 10 years. It appears the mystery "shut down" issue on these engines is caused by the FUEL PUMP..... I started cutting my own grass again for something to do while quarantined, lol. after about 30 minutes or so, the tractor sputtered a bit and just quit. Would not start. Tried starting fluid at one point and I think it started and stopped. Seemed like it was a safety cut out. Let it sit for a while and it started. Then shortly after it would stop again. After reading a few reports of the same issue I'm pretty sure its the pump. Someone else reported that the dealer said they were only good for about 6-8 years..... I'll know for sure soon.....

This mower doesn't have a fuel pump. It's gravity feed to the carb bowl and the engine vacum pulls fuel through the jets.
@T34theAmericanheavy
@T34theAmericanheavy 3 года назад
Small gas engines like these are really easy to trouble shoot. There’s 2 different safetys i know of for small gas, one is cutting spark and the other is cutting the fuel off to the bowl. I don’t think your mower would have a fuel shut off so it’s probably just flow to the carb. Maybe draining the tank and getting new fuel lines will fix it. If that doesn’t work look up online how to fix small gas carbs, they all use the same Principles. And once again if that doesn’t work take the carb to a small engine place and have them clean it and refurbish it

The bowl will come off. It is tight but it will come off. I wish you would have shown the fuel pump because I have the same engine as you and my fuel pump is mechanical.@@JeromeBeeFarm

I get quite a few parts from eBay. That carb looked identical to the old one. Unfortunately the motor ran identical as before I changed it. lol. I gave that mower away after that and got another one. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Did you try wacking the bowl with a screw driver or a wrench, I’ve had some that I nearly had to use a hammer to get off

It looked like it was laser welded together. Maybe not. I just swapped the carbs. Didn't fix my problem.
@Mike-su8si

@@JeromeBeeFarm it wasn't it was just a old rubber gasket around the lip of the bowl and they don't sell the same gaskets for that type of carburetor because i tried replacements for it none would fit from how they were made so i was pissed off about that when thats all my problem was i still have all my old carburetors still bet you your ohv cover had a small air leak or on the hose

Yours is gravity flow fuel, you said it was hot out and that after a while it would stop running. My guess is vapor lock. I have the same motor with fuel pump cause tank is in the rear. If your case is as I say I would have distanced the fuel line further away from the engine. Also with the fuel filter so close to the engine move that too. I've heard of this happening to a guy with the same engine and gravity he just made some wire to move the line out further. I bought an ebay carb too just like you did for the same motor. Issue I had was banging just about a year after I replaced it, now I'm afraid a screw on the butterfly may have backed out and got sucked in.... I need to figure that out. Cheap always gets you I guess.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 года назад
Hi Kartboarder. Yeah, it was weird, it ran fine up to that point and never had a vapor lock problem, not even when it was hot. It just started all of a sudden. At this point I gave up on it and gave it away and bought a used cub cadet for $400. Thanks for the input. It will probably help someone else down the line that watches this video looking for ideas. Have a great day.
@nikatasha1636
@nikatasha1636 4 года назад
@@JeromeBeeFarm Just an FYI - The fuel line on these Kohler engines HAS to be mounted next to the engine as it was originally or it will get vapor locked from the hot air blowing down from the front of the engine. A guy on here with a Craftsman had the same issue after replacing fuel line and leaving it a tad too long. After half tank the tractor would quit. He fixed the fuel line and it ran great.....

Each one of the Kohler pro cv16s and Kohler command cv491s and cv15s all had the gas flooding problem I disconnected the gas pump on the cv491s and made it gravity fed and it fixed the problem for a few years then the problem came back because its a small seat in the carburetor causing it to flood with gas so i figure thats the problem with all the others i have But the cv16s was already a gravity fed carburetor it still works though it just needs a shift hub put on. I think yours needed that carburetor rebuild kit and all it needed from it was one small part you should have checked your ohv cover for any air leaks to a broke gasket around that will make it sputter and pop to then the hose to that should have been on tight i know if the hose has any cracks it'll run bad to
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm Год назад
This one didn't have the pump on it, it was a gravity feed. I never figured out the surge issue. It started all of a sudden.
@Mike-su8si
@Mike-su8si Год назад
@@JeromeBeeFarm like the Kohler pro cv16s is gravity fed so it was probably a bad gasket on the valve cover and it needing that other brass part in the carburetor like mine needs but i put a gas shut off valve on and it works fine that way but it still doesn't fix the problem though it needs a smaller needle seat or a different carburetor if that piece can't be changed out
