Kohler 17.5 HP Engine Carburetor Choke & Throttle Linkage Configuration on a John Deere Lawn Tractor. The same configuration will apply to other models of this engine as well.
Thank you for creating and posting this video. This has helped me with trying to fix my riding lawn mower. I'm new to this and trying to learn a bit about how a riding lawn mower engines works and how to rebuild a carburetor, etc. Thank you!
Extremely helpful. Thankyou. I inadvertently popped the bushing and linkage off of the governor end when I was trying to unhook the carb end of the linkage, and it took me a while to figure out how it must go back together. Your video confirms that I eventually got it right. Would have been nice to see a bit more explanation about how to adjust the throttle cable after you detached it. I suppose I'll look at it and figure it out. I have this 17.5hp Command from an L110 on my Husqvarna Rider 155AWD, I swapped out the 15.5 which has the same linkages.
Thank you for posting this. I'm not an expert with this and wanted to save some money. I totally had mine hooked up backwards. Thanks for posting this and helping us all.
Say Donyboy73, I sure do thank you for putting this little video up here about the 17.5 Kohlor and showing the clear picture of it and it's workings. I had a moter like this on a J/D L110 and it did nothing but idle and it would not do anything but that and it was diving me nuts. Big guy then I saw it, it was the spring from Gov to throttle linkage, it was this showing just how it all hooked up that made this so good Donyboy73 not just the part you worked on. Thank you much Mr. Linkage Man.
Thanks for the reply, I thought that may be the case, I just can't get the settings correct so the motor will turn over. The battery has a full charge and I also added a battery jumper. It turns over freely with the spark plug out. Was running several times yesterday just hard to get to turn over.
Thank you so much! I took mine apart to clean out the carburetor. When I assembled, I crossed the linkage. The mower started, ran up to some very high rpm's causing the fuse to blow.
I have this mower and I’m having trouble with the engine bogging down when the blades are engaged. It only seems to do this after a sharp turn. So far I cleaned the fuel lines changed the filter, cleaned the fuel pump, cleaned air filter and changed spark plug. I just ordered a new carburetor that had to be it. I unplugged the seat sensor and bypassed the engagement sensor with a jumper cable.
Your videos are great. Also looking at others. Still have a problem The little plastic piece holding the governor lever broke so I replaced but am having trouble dialing in the rpms. Seems way to high even at mid throttle. I can back down with the screw so that it idles nicely at lowest throttle but if I turn that up it seems to be too high rpms at mid throttle. Don't even want to run full throttle. Maybe another adjustment? Maybe an adjustment at the bottom screw holding on the governor lever? Thanks.
I have a 15hp Kohler with the exact same configuration. It idles like a dream but when you push the throttle up just a tiny bit it revs way way too high, how do I adjust this?
Hi Donny. With spring coming I've been thinking about my lawn mower. I have a Ranch King (MTD clone) rider. I don't recall the year, but I think it's a 2002. I've found that models just a couple of years newer have a deck wash system. Looking at the parts, it looks like I'd only need to drill some holes to add it in. Have you ever retrofitted a deck wash system and do they even work? Thanks!
hay dony thanks for the many post,,have a question, please , on a 26 hp briggs ,, it is hard to start, had the carb apart the choke flap is working-- but when it does start and run,, I can put the choke on full and there is no effect to the motor it don't load up or do anything , don't seem to be running right when it does run ,, and super hard to start - 26 hp 2 cyl , got any ideas ? seems if I put the battery charger on motor start - so to spin it faster it starts , please lmk ken
Hi Donny, Watching this video - I'm trying to adjust my craftsman GAS 5HP chipper shredder- starts OK - I did a follow some of ur procedures in other Great videos- it takes light stuff ok like about 1/2 inch branches - but when a more heavier load it starts to conk out- then picks up and runs again - I know something has to be adjusted -RPM's carb- what do u think- I'm puzzled- tyng to clean up debris from Hurricane Sandy-- THX
This is a good video but I’m trying to find out how to adjust the air fuel mixture. Also when I try to start the engine it either over revs like crazy or acts like the choke is stuck. If you could make a video or if someone can help me out. Thanks
My 12 year old son just picked up this model and the orange handle is missing. He has another one to replace it with from a parts mower but I am wondering if just the handle comes off or do I have to replace the whole assembly . I don't have too much experience and don't want to try forcing it off, if it is not designed to come off and brake the whole thing. Any advice would be great!
Dony, I have a quick question. My son has a old Troy-bilt rototiller with a Clinton 4 stroke engine, are parts still available for the carb, and wher can I get a new air filter for it?
That little plastic clip holding throttle linkage onto governor arm- give it a little push up with your fingertip, it pops right off and releases linkage from governor arm. Its a plastic version of the metal carb linkage clips seen on cars in the 50s.
I noticed when I move the lever to choke position it closes the butterfly flap on the carburetor.. When I move it down, choke flap opens, but the throttle rod does not move at all. Why? What moves the little arm for the throttle control on the carburetor? You mention that the lever on the carburetor only moves when the engine is running. Please explain. I thought we control the speed (rpm) by moving the speed lever up or down.
What's up donyboy just was given a craftman mower,it will start with the choke on but when i take it off choke it dies any suggestion's. Took the air cleaner off seem's like a lot of gas down there. Engine is a kohler 16hp. Help thank's.
Great vid.....Q. to all: I have a 15hp kohler on my JD Lx255 riding mower(same linkage as in your vid). Lately, it surges when choke is fully closed and then shuts down after about half an hour of grass cutting. I then have trouble getting it re-started. It idles perfectly(no surging). I have replaced the fuel and air filters, new gas and new plug but still the same problem....any suggestions?
a warm motor should not require choke hardly ever.... if motor is cold once its fires off and is running for a few seconds take choke off... when mowing leave the lever on the rabbit symbol
Can I give you a tip? Wash your mower regularly, as it acts as a contagion for weeds. Do really nice edges with a straight shaft and distinguish yourself from the "mow, blow and go" contractors. Sorry, that's two tips.
I have a similar set up on a Kohler cv15s. I just replaced the carb and it needs a slight increase of the revs when set to the working speed (i.e. highest setting before engaging the choke). Is there a way that I can adjust the lever that runs the throttle and attaches to the governor so that it revs just a bit higher? I can manually push that lever and it increases the revs, but I don't see any adjustments that can be made short of trying to straighten out the linkage rod just a bit.
I have the exact same problem. Just need 1,000 more RPMs at full throttle. Sliding the governor plate up and re-bolting didn't work. Did you find a solution?

I have the same engine on craftsman tractor, I got a replacement carburetor and the choke won't close all the way and it won't stat unless I use starting fluid. Help!!!!!
Hey man i have a husqvarna self propelled push mower and i cant get it to run not even a year old it seems to be in the engine kill cable it has slack in it when u let go of it. I would like to know how to fix it so i can cut my grass its knee high to a giraffes ass lol
e-Bay has quite a few Clinton engine parts. Just search "Clinton Engine Parts." There is a carb listed right now NOS bid price of $14.99. "Clinton Engine Part # 39-955-500 *NOS* CARBORATOR" Once you have your engine number from the label use Google to search for Clinton engine parts for that specific engine.
This is great, and I'd love to know what kind of a jerky hick would watch this and downvote. If you have some constructive criticism, then write it in the comments!
i have a craftsman II rider right now. junk. trying to sell it for $75 i hate it. deck engagement went out, headlights dont work. steering is kinda weird battery goes dead fast. just to old and worn out i think.
Hey guys and gals. I need someone's assistance. I have this JD STX 38 rider with a Kohler CV13S engine. The governor spring came off (how, I don't know). I went to a local JD dealer but they couldn't help me as the mower is old and they don't keep maintenance or repair information on it. Can anyone who has an STX 38 rider take a picture of their assembly and send it to me? I would GREATLY APPRECIATE any assistance any one can provide. Thanks so much, garybahrain1
