Replacing Fill Valve & Flush Valve for Mansfield Toilet

Replacing the Fill Valve and Flush Valve in a Mansfield Toilet is an easy DIY project. Watching this video will show you how to remove the tank from the bowl, deconstruct the innards of the toilet, install new parts and reassemble to get your toilet back up and running again. My other video covers replacing just the flush valve, and the process used in this video differs slightly from it in that less water mess is made with emptying the tank.
Please help support the making of this video by checking out the parts used in the making of this video:

This was incredibly helpful. I watched first to convince myself i could do it, and then I watched step by step while completing the project. I believe all previous parts were from 2002. I think everything was ready to break, and I'm glad to have replaced everything.

Thank you!! I have an old Mansfield toilet and didn't know it till I saw your video, mine is so old (date says 1986) that the Mansfield ink stamp in the tank disappeared. All I knew is that my flush valve and fill valve looked very different from the ones in other videos that I saw. Your videos on replacing the Mansfield tank apparatus are a godsend.

Thanks much for this video. Gutted out 16 yo Mansfield and replaced all parts. It's be trickle running for longer than I care to mention. Two issues: Not enough gloves, but a box of gloves has gone from 7.99 to 19.99, or more, because of Covid. Second, the plastic nut, for the valve, was seized. I had to cut that wawa to extract the valve. Most i.port: No injuries and limited cussing. I hate plumbing duty.

Curtis Roger McAlister, this is my exact situation where the store only had the #210 as a "universal" replacement. My old #210 had donut shaped styrofoam ring around the middle of the flush valve cylinder The new one caused a double-flush since it waited longer to drop down, letting too much tank water out. Solved that by preserving the old outer cylinder from the #211 and used it with the other parts of the new flush valve. Took me awhile to realize the little knob the top screws off to allow disassembly!

Kris….THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I’m 73 and my husband is 80. Watching your video, we went step by step (starting and stopping the video), but we got ‘er done! And even knowing what to purchase was a huge help. First trip to Home Depot (pre-video) had me staring at so many different parts that I had no idea where to begin! I put off actually replacing the innards for 3 days after I bought the parts; however, the dread of tackling it was the hard part. But once we started…all good. Now wish I had done it 3 days earlier and had it off my plate.

Thanks Kris for the detailed video, very nice job. I regret pointing this out but feel I must to help people better understand. This video shows a Mansfield #160 tank which uses a #211 flush valve and that is what Kris removed. The #211 valve provides a 1.6 gallon flush. The replacement valve shown is a #210 valve which is used on a different model of Mansfield tank that was used with older styles of toilet bowls that required more water to flush properly. It provides a 3.5 gallon flush. Take notice at the end of the video went the toilet is flushed the water level in the tank goes down to the near the bottom using all the water that’s in the tank which is a 3.5 gallon flush. With the correct #211 valve the water in the tank would go down about halfway which is a 1.6 gallon flush. The toilet bowl that’s matched with the #160 tank is designed to flush with 1.6 gallon so wasting 2 gallons per flush is not necessary. I have never seen a #211 valve in a hardware or big box store, seems like they have to be ordered online. I have two of these toilets and I have learned that only original Mansfield parts should be used because after market parts often fail prematurely particularly the red rubber flush valve seal rings.

I didn’t mention it but I do use the Fluidmaster fill valve, it’s the best fill valve available. Fluidmaster recently came out with the 400H PerforMAX. It has an adjustable valve on it for the water that goes through the tube that fills the bowl so it can be set to where it puts the correct amount of water into the bowl without over filling it. When too must water fills into the bowl the additional water just overflows the trap and goes down the drain which is wasted water every flush. This is what the 400A does and all other fill valves that I have seen. I just replaced the popular 400A valves with this newer 400H on my two toilets. There’s a procedure to determine the correct water level in the bowl and mark it then make the adjustments on the fill valve until you get it just right. The only store around me that has this new #400H valve is that orange big box store.

Thank you for adding this extra information, Curtis...you're absolutely right. It is very important to get the correct replacement parts for the tank you have, and we always recommend using genuine Mansfield replacement parts to ensure proper performance and longevity after the repair. Our customer service team is always available to help diagnose problems, identify models, make recommendations and point people in the right direction (1-877-850-3060). Mansfield replacement parts are available through many online outlets, but also in-store at Menards and most True Value, ACE and Do-It-Best retailers near you. Well-done video, Kris!

Just fyi the red rubber ring fails even with original mansfield parts if you use bleach tablets in the tank. I'm testing some different ones to see if they will last longer with bleach tablets currently but it's still too early to know how long they will last.

Kris- Thank you so much for this video. I had contacted a plumber to look at my toilet that was hissing and condensation was building up on the lid. He told me I needed a brand-new toilet for $1200, or he could re-build the one I had for $800. I could not afford either. I had asked for the least expensive solution- and this was his answer. So, I took to you tube and found your video. I went to Lowes, bought the $30 Kit (fill valve, flush valve, handle (which I didn't need), bolts, washers, TOOLS & the plastic packaging acted as a bucket!!) I followed your video ( & the instruction booklet that came with the kit) and with the help of my daughter WE replaced everything in the toilet and it's working great! We fixed it for $30 with your help!!!

The instructions were spot on. Never done anything like this, followed it to the letter, toilet is working perfectly and no sign of any leaks. The only thing I can suggest to other users: when you get ready to loosen the tank-to-bowl bolts, have a container right underneath the first bolt; that excess water will seep out. Otherwise, this is everything you need to know.

I just want to add one more step; after you fill the tank for the first time, there is now extra weight on the tank seal which will compress the seal a bit. With the tank now full of water, the three tank nuts may need a wee bit of tightening to prevent leaks somewhere down the road once everything settles.

After flushing only half of the water emptied from the toilet as he indicated 👏🏽. The most difficult part for me was using the vice grips to remove the plastic gaskets. I had to call in muscle to do that. The rest was easy. Thanks again for empowering this woman to do her own repairs 💃🏽. I got a quote of $275+ per toilet here in Jersey 🤨.

Not sure think it's a 6 but the numbers were printed backward. So, what do you suggest. It will be my first time trying to replace due to low funds. Please help. Thanks for the video and the support. 😁🌹

Thanks for the video. I wonder if it is possible that when one toilet valve is fixed, the water pressure changes make the other toilet on the same floor not performing like before. Water is not being released, and I have to use the local water line valve to let in water. This becomes difficult that we have to do it after every flush in the other toilet.
@theXchange
@theXchange 4 года назад
shouldn’t... the valves wouldn’t have enough variance in pressure regulation to likely make that kind of impact, let alone have impact while sitting idle during a flush event on the other toilet. If this issue was experienced after changing out the parts, I could see why this is suspect, so I’d consider ensuring the proper parts were procured for your toilet. Firstly, however, I’d conduct some research into this behavior in search of other plausible explanations and resolutions.

@@theXchange Thanks for the quick reply. I will investigate. Will releasing more water through the central valve in the basement affect the water pressure upstair on the second floor? I want to pump more water up so as to make both toilets work without having to turn the local valve each time....

I can’t say for certain as water pressure from the street vary. I have a two story and have mine fully open.

Hi! My Mansfield keep losing about an inch of water behind the bowl… what could be causing this? It fills to the right level when flushed, but I can hear it losing water and It doesn’t appear to be draining into the toilet bowl.

Good job, I have the same setup and have lost the seal on the flush valve, so now I know I need to pull the tank (D'oh!). BTW, if you look at 18:37 you'll see that you severely cross-threaded your fill tube nut. It's still providing at least the minimum pressure needed up on the rubber seat, so no leaks, but certainly not ideal as a large part of the torque you applied has gone into the thread jamming and not pressing on the seat. I despise those solid fill pipes, largely due to the fact that they tend to fight good alignment at the tank fitting, and make you more prone to a cross-thread. I use an over-length braided hose instead when I service one, and put a loop in it between the shut-off and the tank, so it has no tendency to lean to one side. They are a bargain at 10x the price after all of the floods I've had from failed solid line fittings.
@theXchange
@theXchange 9 месяцев назад
Your observation of my having cross threaded the supply line to the fill is correct. I corrected it off camera where subsequent shots should show it’s on correctly. Thanks for the comment and the suggestion on the braided lines!!

I used the old tank to bowl gasket because the new on seemed too thick. The old one (10 years old) seemed to be in good shape. In your video the plastic coupling nut for the water line looks like it is a bit crooked on the tube of the fill valve. Maybe it is just an angle of camera thing. Anyway, I am going to leave the water turned off tonight to make sure there is no leak through the drain over night which would trigger an occasional runninig of the toilet which was started me on this project. If tank is full in the morning I will have been successful. I hope!

great video! why did you reuse the circular nut instead of the hex nut?
@theXchange
@theXchange 5 лет назад
Because the spud gasket itself is round and I wanted a snug fit to help prevent leaks. It would be best to replace the circular nut if at all possible. For me, the big box store didn’t have any with the circular nut in stock, so I reused. I’ve seen many purchase the version with the circular nut from Amazon (link in the video description below).

Thanks so much for this video. I have an oooold Mansfield toilet that ran constantly. I wasn't sure where the leak was coming from and decided to just replace everything. I was a bit intimidated but your video made it very straightforward. I especially like that you included what to buy and recommended the tank to bowl kit. The gasket on mine was nearly unrecognizable and all of the washers on the bolts were rotted. I followed the video step by step and my toilet flushes perfectly. No leaks. Don't know what this would cost if I hired a plumber, but it cost me $35 and an hour of my time. Thanks again.

This video is going to be very helpful when I go in to redo mine. The tank constantly leaks into the bowl, and replacing the red full seal hasn't stopped it. generally it comes as one kit. always good practice to change it all out anyway as that plastic can become brittle and cause you more trouble down the road / near immediate future than it’s worth. That’s why I carefully inspected the circular lock nut before reusing it. I had no choice since the place I went to was out of stock on the part that comes with a circular lock nut.
