I'm a girl who doesn't know a thing about plumbing, but you have an easy way to explain and at least I understand a little bit more of what I have at home.THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge ❤

Great video Charley! I have owned A L Smith in the past. We had a Navian Tankless installed about 10 years ago and love it! It replaced an electric that came with the house. Where whoever chose to install the water heater there was no place to vent, hence the electric. The Navian was one of few units that could handle the distance needed to vent out the foundation. Cool install, would send a pic if I could

mark pro , navian is a good unit but don’t forget to run your white vinegar thru it to clean the inside

Eric, easy man! I haven't had one service call on the Navian in 12 years! I am going to take Charley's advice and run some white vinegar through the unit for the first time. Yes I'm going to talk to my brother in law who has been in the trade for a very long time and who also is a master plumber! Chill out!

Over on the west coast (earthquake zones) we have to strap our WH to the wall, and have gas flex line running from hard pipe to unit valves. Is that not the case in your area?
@CharleyThePlumber
@CharleyThePlumber 6 месяцев назад
That is not the case here in Michigan. We do not have any of those style natural disasters

Hi Charlie, My , natural -drafted, water heater 50 gal (Bradford white ), backdrafts sometime when house goes into negative pressure… The 4 inch liner is properly installed and runs through the brick chimney. For most of the time it operates fine, but in cold season with windows and doors closed it tends to backdraft ones in a while. Especially, when other fans in the house are running… Then I open the closest window from the tank and it changes the flue back into chimney. My hvac recommended installing a 6 inch air intake pipe ( for combustion air)… I’m afraid it would bring all cold air from the outside…? What is your opinion on this? Should I be changing to power vent tank or tankless? Thanks Andrei
@CharleyThePlumber
@CharleyThePlumber 7 месяцев назад
All the houses in our area now have the air intake because they are building everything so tight. The chimney liner is cold when the wh first kicks on so it will take a bit for it to heat n draw up the chimney. I personally would not recommend the power vent I would recommend the 6inch air intake first
@andreilesiuk9538
@andreilesiuk9538 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for your reply Charlie, I see… Is it because power vent is too noisy ? I’ll try air intake. Would the tankless be a better choice then power vent? Thanks

I'm not familiar with power vents. How does the power vent allow you to use PVC vs metal for the vent?

@waynedawson6926

Don't need pan if hot water heater is install on non-combustible floor, like concrete. Wood you need pan.

What is the danger of operating a water heater that has not been flushed in 2o years ?? The Whirlpool is still working. I only changed its thermocouple once
@CharleyThePlumber
@CharleyThePlumber Год назад
There is no danger as long as there is no black soot around the chimney

I am not a plumber but I think your sediment trap is too small? Shouldn't be 3" minimum? Also, having too low of a temperature will allow bacteria to form inside your pipes and cause a 'rotten egg' smell. Finally, nice job but what happens when homes lose power due to storms? These power vented water heaters (if there is no battery backup/generator) are essentially useless?
@CharleyThePlumber
@CharleyThePlumber Год назад
Yes should have been a bit longer, as far as temp goes over 120 and you risk someone getting scalded
