I also have a leak in my cooling system. Have not yet checked if it really is the waterpump. If it is, I'm not at all looking forward to replace it as my 140i is even more cramped in.. But thank You a lot for making this video! I now know what I will be dealing with, thx!!

Good video! I did my water pump a few months ago so minus points for it being too late for me haha all jokes aside good work, essentially took the same steps as you did when I did mine. Removing that fan shroud is definitely a game changer for accessibility in regards to that final bolt on the bottom of the pump! Cheers! P.S. only thing I’d say is that as far as removing the charge pipe completely, if you want to save a second or two u can just take the throttle body side off and that should give you enough wiggle room to access the pump easily. I’m still stock however so maybe aftermarket is a slightly different story. B58 gang!!

Can I take off the belt tensioner by just removing the 3 screws to throttle body and wiggle the charge pipe away from tensioner?

On b48 motor is a little bit easier because you don't need to remove anything else, right now I need to change it but I don't know if I should change the gasket from the support, any suggestions? Thanks

I replaced the water pump on my b46/b48 as preventative maintenance as the car is a 2017. HOWEVER, one thing I would definitely keep an eye out for is the plastic water pipe that bolts into the block underneath the intake manifold. That actually formed a hairline crack on my car and caused a decent sized coolant leak and I ended up having to replace it. The good news is that the part only cost me $45 from my local bmw dealership and I replaced it myself, just have to remove the intake manifold which can be a bit tricky at first.

yeah there are 100s of locations where a coolant leak can happen. this is just one of the more common locations.

I think I’ve actually done one of those on a low mileage diesel engine. The filter housing assembly was seeping so decided to do it also with all the cooler seals that are down there

It’s the coolant flange that connects to the upper radiator hose correct?

at 10:33, I noticed you didn't scrape the old gasket material, is that a permanent part of the block or should I scrape it off with a plastic blade?

Did you use any type of lubricant on the gasket? mine says to use silicone grease.

FYI the BMW instructions say you should use loctite 5970 on the gasket to ensure a good seal. Probably not necessary, but will reduce chances of issues.

Did the job easily only having to remove the air box and the fan. Charge pipe wasn’t in the way. Stock motor

Wait till its leaking. No point in changing something that works. Mileage/age approximately 50-100k miles / 5-10 years

Hey bro, my car is at 95k miles rn closing in on 100k pretty quick. Seeing this vid is starting to get me a bit worried and wanting to do some preventative maintenance. Got a good idea on what I should look out for? I changed the 2 coolant caps, the pcv membrane, oil change, spark plugs and coil packs. Anything else engine-wise I should check on? Not sure how the expansion tanks are on these models but theyd probably blow right about now on my N52. Not sure how it is on the B58. Cant tell if this noise I hear when I step on the gas is the fuel injectors or the wastegate. Should prob do one of those next.

Nothing much really. These cars are pretty reliable and a lot of people have 100K plus with just regular maintenance.

lol maybe. i tried without moving the fan and wasn't able to access the lower bolts. you'll need an extension that is the perfect length to reach it without hitting the fan.

@kern417 Update - it's been week part finally came in. Worked on it last night. I did end up removing the fan 😅. I was able to remove n replace the pump without fully removing the charge pipe. Just undid screws from the throttlebody and move the pipe slightly up. 👍🏾 Thank you for showing us how cx I appreciate it 🙏

some of the older ones have an extra part yes. but from what i see the newer revisions delete it.

The b58 has 3 water pumps. A mechanical pump and an electric pump for the engine/turbo circuit (electric pump primarily is to run after the car turns off like a turbo timer) as well as a 3rd electric pump for the intercooler circuit.

it's more about getting an appropriate length extension in there to get all the screws.

Already figured it out. We also have to buy the support part where the pump attaches. They dont sell 340i pumps separately which is odd and dumb imo. I can send you email pics etc if you're interested in

So I got just the pump itself bmw wanted to sell me the whole thing but it’s not made that way anymore and I put the pump on (just water pump) and bam works amazing like it should
