How to replace a residential valve solenoid when the valve does not turn on from the automatic irrigation controller.
Most Rain Bird residential irrigation valves work without any issues for years, but occasionally they stop opening even though the irrigation controller is still running. Other valves may be working fine, but one valve does not. This video can be used to replace a valve solenoid that is no longer working. The solenoid is what is connected to the irrigation controller and begins the valve open and closing process. Replacement valve solenoids can be purchased directly from Rain Bird or from most retailers that sell Rain Bird products.

I think even I can replace the solenoid after watching your video. Now, to find the appropriate part may be a different story.

Thank you. I installed a new Rain Bird controller that had a failed solenoid. I swapped it with another and it worked.

I don’t get tightening the solenoid fully, then after turning the water back on loosening it a quarter turn?

Exactly. Turn it back a quarter turn to the water starts flowing, wire it up and you're good to go! Enjoy your $8,000 water bill!

Do you have to cut the power to Is it before playing with the wires?? If yes, would be by just turning the house's main circuits breaker off?

Note than for some types of Rain Bird valve, you can purchase an entire valve including the solenoid for less than the price of a replacement solenoid.

The two wires coming out of the solenoid look the same (black & white). Are they different or not?

I have a question please, how do I wire a new Solenoid? The reason for this question is because there are two wires and both of them are black in color, how do I know which one is common and the other is power? Thanks a lot in advance and have a good day.

The solenoid is bidirectional so it doesn't make any difference.

as soon as we replace with the Solenoid and we have connected to the watering scheduler, we tighten it clockwise or have it loose? (we want it to be watered automatically by the scheduler)

Nope just turn timer box to the off position and turn off water supply. Electrical current is very weak it won't hurt you.

I have diagnosed the solenoid as being defective and needing replacement. I cannot get it loose. I turn if fully counterclockwise as instructed but it is too tight for me to hand screw off. Can I use a pair of pliers and if so, will I break it or does it matter at this point since I plan to replace?

it doesn't really matter if you break it. However if you break the valve itself you will have to repair that... which is like a $30 part.

I have an old Rain Bird valve. Need to replace solenoid. New solenoids look different from my 30 year old one. Can’t find an old one. Is the new version compatible with old valve?

It might be a discontinued version. Possibly that is why it does not fit with the new solenoid.

I have a DC coil can i replace that with your AC solenoid coil?

Hello Roman, no, DC solenoids can't replace AC solenoids, the voltage provided by your irrigation controller must be the same type as your solenoid; the AC solenoids are needing 24 VAC to work properly and the DC solenoids are needing 9 VDC.

Your video makes a MAJOR mistake. The solenoid must be tightened, hand tight, after the test is made by backing out the solenoid 1/4 turn. If the solenoid is NOT re-tightened, water will flow even if the controller has the valve turned off.
