Say you land that trophy fish and you want to have a mount to remember the moment. This segment might help you decide how to best preserve that memory.
Everyone who is saying replicas look worse or nothing like the fish need to wake up and stop going to your buddies taxidermy shop down the road... I’ve seen tons of replicas and skin mounts of bass side by side and the replica will always look better if it’s made by someone who actually knows what they are doing
@Quirin M. yes there is to have a physical memory of the fish while knowing that fish is breathing and living waiting to be caught by another fishermen who will be as happy as u were when u caught it
Everyone have their own opinion so just learn how to respect it. I personally prefer skin mounts even though I'll be honest that replicas can look better. I just prefer the real thing so I know it's the fish I actually caught and that's how it looks like at least 90% of it.
I imagine a really good taxidermist could use airbrushing to make them indistinguishable in most cases. What i am interested to see is how they do the molding/casting of the dead animals/fish. I have done some life casting before so it has to be similar to that but curious on the products used/techniques . And weather there is a video that describes/ takes you thru the whole molding/casting process.
Sorry but someone has to say it. Thats the problem with fish trophies. You cannot tell whether it is a 3d printed plastic fish or a real fish. Thats why i suggest head mounts.( at least thats how we do it most of the time here in Germany) Because the heads mostly have enough structure to make it look real. The spraypaint effect on the body, which is supposed to make the fish look wet doesnt work. In terms of deers etc. Full body taxidermy works fine.... on sea animals ... I am sorry
I went to my taxidermist for my trout, He went on to talk me into a replica, and told me it would look better. When I got my fish back it was four inches too short and the head was smaller. I will never go though that again and waste my hard earned money on a replica. If I would have done the skin mount I would have gotten my fish back, and not a smaller one.
You Tube I understand your frustration, but maybe you chose the wrong taxidermist. Its always good to ask around and check reviews with any product/company.
I really wish some of the taxidermy companies would lower their prices on repo mannikans . That would HELP our catch and release programs popularity of fish for our future anglers. As a taxidermist, most that come to me are 1st timers and don't take measurements and bring me the actual specimen . Drop the prices of repo fish and make skin mount mannikans more Pricey. " PROTECTING CONSERVATION" right? The majority of anglers think they have to hand me a carcass in order to mount. SPORTSMAN TV needs to spread the word for some of us taxidermist/conservationists NO KILL IS OK add a few inces if needed "a fish tale' YOU AS AN ANGLER know the tail behind the fish
Most large fish caught in the ocean are replicas, The salmon because of its being a fatty fish is a good candidate because it takes a while for the head to be degreased, so using a replica head is a good idea. I always took pictures of the fish or animal before mounting, you would be surprised how many complaints you will get from the sportsman, saying the color is not right or the deer head does not look right.
I like the original, the same fish could be on multiple people's walls if you do replica. And in my opinion something worth hanging on my wall, is something not everyone can catch every day or even year. 😃 Just my opinion. I don't have a problem with people doing replicas tho, just not for me if possible.
I love replicas way more then skin mounts! I’ve seen so many skin mounts loose color and yellow out with age while replicas just continue to sit there and look great. Plus I love to catch a release! My fish are usually over 400-1,000 lbs so it’s less hassle that way too!
Anyone who can't spot a reproduction, isn't standing in the same room as the mount. They never look like an actual fish... ...and they charge more! Nah...
Problem is anyone can be like hey I caught this fish blah blah and then get a replica of it, if it’s skin then it actually serves its point of getting it mounted
@@mathewcobb9443 doesn't matter if it makes them feel better about their self esteem SO BE IT. We live one life. NP with living life "BIG". Never crush ones invisions of something larger than REALITY. Good Luck and KUDOS. That time hopefully comes for you. Peace out Bro
Mostly true, thanks to breeding/stocking programs of the florida strain! Hell, even 10 pounds is considered VERY realistic to catch these days, with a lil patience, in states like Texas, Cali, Bama, and Florida. But ultimately it's an individual fisherman who decides if the fish they catch is worthy of becoming a "trophy". I still know guys up north who'd mount a 6 pound bass in a heartbeat if they caught one. On the opposite side of things, I know guys in California who wouldn't even take a picture of a bass less than 12 pounds haha. So really....location, location, location.
Replicas are better because you only have to harm one fish to make multiple copies over and over again. And isn't skin based ones your going to eventually mount the skin on a mold from a molding company anyway. Though i get it can be a little extra to airbrush them as i can see.
By law here in Ireland we are only allowed have replica mounts, no skins mounts for fish. We are allowed keep other trophies like the skull. But I'm pretty sure that law only applies to fish. Most people prefer to keep the skull though
no real fish in one and only part with mount. skin mount would be only you could it was the fish you caught. only one you wouldn't even have to catch a fish just tell the guy you want a 10lb. LM bass fixed up. anyone ask, oh yeah I caught that.
Give me a replica all day... only takes a minute to weigh and measure a trophy sized bass. I caught a 14 lb large mouth once. Thought the guy I was fishing with was going to have a fit when I released it... I got my pictures all I need
It makes me sad to think some people think it is OK to kill a rare trophy fish with all of those special Genes. Good replicas look amazing, the key word is "good". Skin mounts ALWAYS shrink from original proportions.
The replicas don't look as good, but I respect the fish and want to release it to let others catch it, let it get bigger, and live its life in general. So I will just get a replica
SlimeBallGuy Sounds like your getting your mounts done by a shit artist, Reproduction mounts done by the right artist are awesome and will out last an original mount, You shouldn’t be able to tell them apart!!!
i hate trophy hunting and fishing. if your not going to eat it don't kill it. but i wish i got a replica of my PB at 9.14 lb back when i caught it. so i turned him loose and that was 15 years ago at least.
Get that thing back in the water healthy as can be only been out of the water for 5 minutes while your brilliant ass shows everyone how to measure the length of a fish and check weight with digital scale haha
