@williamgarry2635

Charlie Davies is stating FACTS. There are no good arguments to keep GGG as coach... This isn't just about the failure to get out of the group in Copa. This is about the failure to compete against top 15 teams over the last 6 years, including Germany, Columbia, The Nederlands, & Uruguay as well as the poor play against lesser teams in CONCACAF including the loss to TNT, the near loss to Jamaica, and the loss in Copa to Panama (the USMNT should be well coached enough to avoid stupid Red Cards at this point, should have a coach who has a plan in case each player gets a Red Card called against them, and should be well coached enough to be able to get a result against a team as inferior to the USMNT as Panama). The system that Gregg has tried to implement over the past 6 years to play possession ball out of the back with CBs & GKs that are not good with the ball off their feet and then to fire crosses into the box to FWDs that are better in counterattacking or transition play is counter to how the talent available to the USMNT is best utilized. Furthermore, the continued insistence by Gregg to call in players to camp, particularly from MLS, that he himself doesn't trust to put into games is nonsensical. This team over 6 years has failed to take advantage of corner kicks and free kicks. He also has not taken any steps to craft a style for the USMNT that exploits the instincts of most CONCACAF teams to "bunker for their lives" against us (which seems obvious even to me, which would be to play a 4-2-3-1 or even a 3-5-2 with Pepi central and get your wingers, Christian, Weah or Haji, and Gio up the field and in the gaps to get early goals and get teams out of a bunker). Instead, Gregg continues to insist on playing a 4-3-3 in ALL situations, more often with a double 6 (instead of a 6/8/10), and treats Gio as a luxury on this team that is the first player to be substituted off in all cases instead of as the critical cog that unlocks scoring opportunities for our Forwards in the final third.. Additionally, the substitution patterns used by Gregg are perplexing at best and illogical at worst. And to top it all off, Gregg's desired style of play is to obtain bare minimum results against opponents in order to win or tie as the situation dictates instead of trying to achieve the BEST result possible. Or said another way, Gregg coaches the team not to lose instead of playing to win. The best arguments anyone offers to keep Gregg are "how it would be a risk to hire a new coach this close to WC," "How can USSF afford a new coach," "There is a 'requirement' that the USMNT & USWNT coaches be paid the same amount" (which is untrue), "well, they already have to pay out Gregg's contract", "the USSF would have to admit that they made a mistake if they fire Gregg", or "Gregg needs more time (than 6 years) to demonstrate progress with this group"... If the goal is to change the way that the world views the USMNT, then Gregg has objectively FAILED at this mission. It is time to bring in a new coach that is capable of getting the most out of the talent available to these players.

Because they (USSF) dug themselves into a hole and it's a worst case scenario so they have to carefully script this. THEY did this when they wasted 6 months last year in a SHORT cycle only to bring him 'back'. THEY were the ones that rubber stamped him after the Iran game in 2022. Crocker wants to ease the burden of this massive gaffe. Oh - and don't forget - there's still a HUGE chance they don't change anything. I'm serious. The USSF is beyond inept and lazy.

Love how they put up Nations League and Gold Cup trophies as if those are worthy of consideration. A training cone as manager could and should win those competitions. My pick (other than Klopp, which is pure fantasy league stuff) is Pelligrino Matarazzo, one of the best American coaches around, currently working in Germany. Learned under Nagelsman for years, saved Stuttgart from relegation with points to spare, and got Hoffenheim into the Europa League for the upcoming season. He's coached a bunch at the youth level, too, which, for me, is a skill critical to the successful development and scouting of young players here in the States.

Right. Better were the players in 94, or 2002 when they beat Portugal and went in to the 1/4 finals. Or in 2009 when they beat Spain (#1 in the world) in a major tourny with talent like Josy friggin Altidor. Let me guess you just started watching and realized we don’t have a ton of world class “futbol” players 😮😂😅 Duhhh! Believe me….we have PLENTY of talent and depth to get out of a group with Bolivia and Panama! Panama!!!!!! We have players progressing and earning playing time in top leagues in Europe. You’re going to tell me Milan, Juventus, Bundisliga etc don’t know how to evaluate who should be in. The field? Ok. Riiiiiiiight. We lost to Panama! We should beat them with our Olympic squad. And probably would with that coach! Wake up.

No need to put emphasis on _men._ That's the only global business anyway. The women winning facing 95% amateurs was a different _easy mode_ game.

@@SojuNinja You’re right that a great manager can make average players look world class, but using Southgate and England as an example proves my point. Southgate is an average manager but is blessed with world class talent, hence the reason they go far, despite poor play. The US has average players at best, Pulisic included, and a below average manager. The US players may play in Europe, but they lack football intelligence. I would take Landon Donovan or Clint Dempsey, in their prime, over Pulisic any day. Until football is played at a truly grassroots/concreteroots level like it is in other parts of the world, not this pay to play/ncaa draft bs as it is here, the US will never have a rich talent pool to pull from. Watch even the women will begin to look like scrubs as more resources are being pumped into the women’s game abroad. Sorry Buddy!

@iuniversol "Average at best" won't make the starting lineup on AC Milan or Juventus. Even from a professional standpoint, you're saying he would struggle to get minutes in a mid-table Serie B team. You're clearly speaking from your emotions rather than logic, which makes the rest of your argument brittle. For instance, you taking prime Dempsey or LD seems more of a personal choice, because how many big teams now would agree with you? If you feel that they would take them over Pulisic, than you're also saying that football now is way worse than it was back then, which is also untrue.
