I'd also put a digital probe thermometer extended out under the heat source a few inches above where the dragons back would be. That way you are checking the temp under the bulb aswell.

Great video! I normally set my probs slightly away from the basking spot, set them slightly lower than what I want my basking temps to be and then measure the basking spot with a temp gun, I've found it to be the most accurate way of doing it, plus some thermostats only go up to 32°c and most of the time I want a hotter basking spot than that 😄 Don't suppose you've got your own discord or Facebook group? something to chat to other reptile enthusiasts in?

Yes mate I've seen a lot of your videos and really learnt a lot I've got bearded dragon in a 4ft vivarium and at the minute I've got the basking light in the vivarium with a 50watt bulb and it's still getting a bit hot now it's summer I was thinking about cutting a hole in the top of my vivarium and sitting the light above it and that I get a lot more room in it what do you suggest??? Thanks

Can I ask what wattage bulb your using in the beardie viv? If you try a lower wattage bulb the lamp will stay on providing constant light. You want the lowest wattage bulb that achieves temps.

Il be setting up my vivarium this week for my soon bearded dragon, I'm working with 2x 300w exo terra thermostats. I was thinking one for my basking lamp, one for my ceramic heater "if needed threw winter" that will be monitored closely whether it is to be used or not. How should I set the heat lamp probe? I was thinking down against the left side of my tank abit lower than the basking spot.. then infrared temp gun the spot below my 100w basking bulb, does this sound right? Any comments will be appreciated, just let me know how you would set each probe. So I can get an idea. Many thanks

My original thought was to do as you have been doing, I think I'm gonna have to increase my bulb wattage and see if that helps. Appreciate your time making these videos, I've learned a bunch!

@Lucifaar

I would personally avoid aspen, it tends to mold easily. Whatever substrate you use needs to be deep enough so your animal isn't sitting too close to the mat to avoid burning it.

Thanks for the video. I bought one but I'm thinking what if its a hot day or night, then having the mat holding at the same temp will be overkill wouldn't it? Would it not make more sense to have the sensor in the tank to decide if mat should cool down or not ?

Without knowing your specific setup, you may have to get a thermostat that can go higher than whatever your current one is capable of. Also try a higher wattage basking bulb.
@tonjer.2948
@tonjer.2948 Год назад
With baskinglight and dimming stats it also works well as long as you buy the lowest w suitable to create the rught temperature at a given distance (to the bsking spot), that will keep the bulb running on max or nearly that even if the probe is on the basking spot 😊

Add the probe to the base, the chances are the ball will move the substrate to get to the heat, not every time but if you have it set much higher allowing for the substrate & then they move it, just something to think about

One thing i'd like to point out. For the under tank heater, don't put the probe DIRECTLY on top of the heat mat. Put the probe inside the hide of whichever animal you are heating. If you put the probe on directly on the mat, the thermostat could say that the mat is 30 degrees, but inside the hide it could be 20 degrees and turn it off. So your precious critter could be way colder than it needs to be. And always, always double check your temperatures with a digital temperature gun. Don't always rely solely on what the thermostat says.
@d_boss_mxk9712
@d_boss_mxk9712 2 года назад
That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe Im wrong or not thinking correctly but I absolutely hate the idea of having a sharp pointy probe lying on the surface where my snake likes to slither. Even if its buried a little Id think the animal would eventually just burrow into it. Idk Im still new and trying to figure out my own way to do things.
@Lucifaar
@Lucifaar 2 года назад
@@d_boss_mxk9712 The reason you put the probe inside the snake hide is so that you get a temperature reading on the inside of their hide. It does you no good to know how hot the mat is, you need to know how hot the area the snake is sleeping is. Remember that the heater also has to heat up all the substrate above it. Also the probe is not sharp and pointy. It's super blunt and rounded. Think the same bluntness your eraser at the end of a pencil would be. Or the same radius as your average pill medication capsule.
@cured_bacon647
@cured_bacon647 Год назад
@@Lucifaar terrible advice. Snakes will burrow or move substrate to get to the heat. If people listen to what you’re saying then the snake will burrow and touch the glass with a seriously too hot heat mat under it and get burned. Also dont make the substrate as thick where the mat is…
@Lucifaar
@Lucifaar Год назад
@@cured_bacon647 I mean sure, some snakes will. But not every single species of snake burrows. In fact most snakes don't burrow. So yes while you are right for snakes that Burrow, that is something you need to look into when getting a snake. My ball python however has never burrowed a day in his life, and I've never heard of ball pythons burrowing. Most reptiles that burrow don't burrow to get closer to the heat, when they are trying to regulate their body temperature, they burrow to get away from the heat. You shouldn't have under tank heating for a burrowing species anyway. If you have thin enough substrate that your snake can get down to the glass, then the temperature difference won't be that much anyway between the hide and the heat pad.
@Inkaddiction906
@Inkaddiction906 Год назад
@@Lucifaarsnakes will burrow to touch the warmest spot. If the probe isnt under the glass the snake will get burned. You put it under the hide and a snake could move it, changing the temp and potentially burning the snake. The understood fix for this is to use a temp gun to check your surface temperatures. Keep the probe under the glass and use gun to check surface temps, then you can edit your temp to ensure the probe has a good reading, and your snake is safe.
