She didn't just have one good song she had an entire good album. I just think they gave up on her too soon. Her record is one of my rare jewels... plus she is fine as fawk!
Man she was hella talented and underrated. They wasn’t ready for this type of music in the early 2000’s. If this was to had came out now it would of took her through the stratosphere...
I worked as a PA on this music video. Shot in the old Galapagos bar in Williamsburg (when Williamsburg was cool). The thing about working on music videos is you know a great track cuz you have to hear it on replay for 10-12 hours. I didn’t get sick of this one at all! Found out years later after becoming a Santigold fan that she wrote this. Made sense.
It’s not just generational bias. 2001 and 1994 were two distinct years of phenomenal music. If How I Do was released in 2019 and backed by the labels, I’ll have restored faith in the recording industry’s ability to identify, record, produce and most importantly, support great music. Churning out 💩 for the sake of making a buck is a disservice to those of us that crave something that resonates in your soul.
jermaine davis YEEEEESSSS! I remember DISTINCTLY two of my fav artists’ albums came out that year: Tweet, Southern Hummingbird and Amerie: All I Have. Both, egregiously underrated.
I love Res! I used to have this CD back in the day. It was the soundtrack to my life back then. I was in my early twenties and working in NYC and enjoying life. Now I'm married with kids. LOL
Funny enough the song is about the Neo Soul men back in the day. Santi White wrote the song for Mos Def. I heard the were fake woke and just as gross as "unwoke" men.
"Hipster" is a newer term, but what we define as hipsters existed in the '70s, '80s and '90s too. And from the late 40s thru 1960s they were called "Beatniks".
Res, Kelis, Farell, Pharrell, Pharell & 2 Chainz as the Neptunes == vs ++ Dip Set due to demo & LP thefts caught by Thefts by 029. [King Just, Mad Lion & Baby Sham]
She was but this music also fit the times…she was just a Black girl doing alt-pop rock and we know that doesn’t fly with industry execs they never see the vision
Her album is one of those hidden gems. Along with Esthero, Res is an artist I was exposed to YEARS after her debut, which I'm not disappointed by at all. At the time I found out about these two beautiful women, I could better appreciate their work for what it is, more than I could, had I learned about it at the time of their debuts. But, I would love to see Res (Esthero, as well) receive more exposure. She deserves it!
Alexa Rihani Yes. I've been listening to Santigold for quite some time now! Could have sworn I heard talk of Res signing under Santigold or something like that, but yeah. I know they've worked together.
She was about 10 years ahead of her time and definitely should’ve been Grammy nominated. Edit: This is my 2nd favorite female debut album all time behind Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This album is that dope.
I bought this album 2 years ago because I walked into the record store and they were playing it and there was no way in hell I was leaving without it.... I love this girl even if I am years behind... hehehe
Feel so bad, was at a karaoke place in Detroit. I was approached by a young Caucasian woman promoting music. The music she was passing out was this CD by Res. I wasn't listening well to her concerning the music and I told her no thanks. My sister later purchased the CD and told me to listen to it. I dud and instantly became a fan. I went back to 2001 in Detroit and felt grief. I know who Res is now. She is awesome. Hollywood is doing themselves a travesty by not supporting her.
One of the most sophisticated and classy songs ever. Res absolutely stuns in this hypnotising artistic masterpieces. So dynamic and intelligent. Love her and her phenomenal album How I do
I feel this was ahead of its time, musically. Had this come out after 2009, and maybe I'm wrong, this wouldve blown up. But look at the garbage Taylor Swift puts out. That pre packaged pop shit makes it big. Not hating on the girl but her crap is just that. Many of you understand what I mean. This whole album was "Golden"
Such an underrated song. "We know the truth about you, how would they love you if they know all the things we know". I'm sure in our lives we've experienced a Golden boy or girl. Or met a celeb who we thought we this or that and turned out to be the least of our expectations. 😅 Now your the prince of the magazine.
This sounds so early 2000s. Those first 2 years in the decade that still kinda sounds 90s. there was something special between 99 and 02. And this song captures it. Can't explain it. Had to have been there. I also remember with young people there was this "digging in the crates " culture where they would look up old jazz and blues music. Internet was brand new and not overbearing. Everyone had friends. Good time to just be black.
The thing I love about this song is you cant define a genre you just know its dope... music, content, writing, composition, performance, radio friendly, creativity, style.
I been in entertainment and arts for awhile this song talks about how phoney people can be in it . She's talking to her boyfriend ,and she had insight way beyond her years when this track was written . If my wife could sing this to me instead of talking this is what she would probably sound explaining that life to me.
I played this CD so much. A classic. Great songs from beginning to end. Gorgeous woman that is full clothed and with clever lyrics. She was too real for the industry.
I left an old MP3 player I loved in the back of a cab driving me back from a party I didn't wanna attend some years back. I know whomever found it is out there somewhere thanking me for helping them discover this song
The morning of 911 I woke up, rolled out of bed and went to Tower records to buy this Jay Z and Mariah Carey. I was blasting this song on the way back home and noticed people pulled over on the side of the highway. The world trade center was crumbling and I had no idea because this some had me in a zone
In 2001 I was 14 years old this song was a comfort to me especially when Golden Boys in High School try to mess with me but I won't have it. This song is a pure classic.
So I’ve been listening to “They Say Vision” for a couple of years now because it always reminded me of the day my older brother and I were hanging out at his girlfriend’s house after a wild New Year’s Eve party and he put that song on as background music while we just hung out talking life and watching an old blaxploitation movie while downing beers. I stuck to that one song and never actually listened to the whole album until very late last night. Maaaan when “Golden Boys” hit, I had no idea what I was about to listen to🤯🤯🤯🤯
I will forever be inspired by this song and video... Everytime I see it, its like the first time I saw it on BET... Different, ahead of its time and just down-right funky.
I heard this back in 2002. it was so different to anything out there at the time. Ironically if Res dropped her CD today she might have had a chance to make it big since experimental vibes are big at the moment and she wouldn't be just categorized as R&B.
Listening to her cd everyday all day was the best when I was going through a rough spot in my life. It was so uplifting and made me want to dance. Great artist
I love this song. It reminds me of living in Seattle when I was 19. We need more artists like her out there. I love her funky style and she's Gorgeous!
