This video compares the censorship made to all of the Resident Evil 1 (Biohazard 1) versions - the original PS1/Saturn releases, RE 1 Director's Cut (and the later DualShock version), the various PC versions, the DS RE1 Deadly Silence plus the GC and HD RE Remake. This covers censorship made to Western regions as well as in Japan.
This censorship includes:
Editing the intro to reduce the violence as well as turning it black and white instead of fully coloured.
Removing the shot of Kenneth's head during the first zombie cutscene.
Censoring Chris Redfield smoking a cigarette during the intro and their bad ending.
Changing the red blood to green.
Removing the Hunter enemies' decapitation death scenes.
Removing the 'gore credits' which show a montage of the characters getting violently killed during the end's credit scene.

Its complete opposite now. Japan censors gore and NA allows gore now.

Yeah, it weird how much Japan and the US flip flopped when it came to video games. The other thing was difficulty. During the NES and SNES era they usually made the Japanese versions of games more difficult. But then it switched during the PS1 generation to making the US versions harder.

The gory version of the credits was in the Saturn version. You unlocked it by saving both characters Eg. Jill must save Barry & Chris. And Chris must save both Jill and Rebecca.

3 versions are completely uncensored they are the original PS1 Biohazard version, the US PC version and of course the ultra rare PowerVR PC version and Biohazard PowerVR versions, I have them all and can confirm this ^^

I got the Japanese Biohazard white case, I've never played it but it said to be the uncensored version. It has a extra disc with with files you can write to your memory card.

Really? I really enjoyed it even more replayable. skippable cutscenes and loading times. Just backgrounds are very compressed. They look really washed off.

I actually like the name change. Naming it Resident Evil kept me unsure of what caused the monsters to exist. Until I got further into the game, I assumed I was fighting evil, demonic monsters from Hell; Richard referring to them as "demons" fed fuel to that assumption as well. The fact a virus caused the chaos actually made it less frightening for me. And the intial release of the Director's Cut pissed me off so much. I was excited for its release and every magazine would tease the new scenes and the uncut intro. I purchased it October 24th, 1997, the night before my birthday. When I saw the intro was unchanged, I assumed I chose the wrong mode and ended up restarting the game 3 different times before I gave up. I wouldn't see the uncut intro until 1999, and it took forever to load since I had dial-up.

I'd love to see a death montage like this for a game like Fear Effect which has some of the most interesting ways to die in video games.

Good work with your research, just discovered this channel, you've got some interesting and well done stuff. One small correction I have, that I didn't see mentioned in the comments yet. The japanese version of the Director's Cut is in fact uncut, both the regular one, and the DualShock version. It's still all in black and white like the original japanese version and not in color like in some of the european DC's, but uncut nonetheless, with all the Joseph/zombie dog gore you can imagine, Kenneth's CGI head and Chris smoking. And from what I've heard, the spanish DC has the uncut intro as well, but the UK version is definitly censored. From what it looks like, only the versions with full english text were affected by the complete censorship, for some weird reason.

(6:48) Actually, I believe the hunters in the REmake have three instant death attacks. 1) They pounce on you and instantly kill you if you don't get them off. 2) They decapitate you with ease if your health is in caution. 3) They stay in one spot at a distance and shriek for 2 seconds, and if not stopped, slash your throat out for an instant kill.

I dunno about the different Playstation versions but I can confirm that every PC version has the Gory Endcredits FMV on the disc. It should be in the \horr\usa\movie directory of the CD and its called stfz_r I have checked every PC version including my copy of the PowerVR version and its on that even on the censored UK PC version its there ! So in conclussion I can say that aside from the UK PC version every PC version of RE1 is uncensored including the german release and USA release and the PowerVR version is of course based on the BH1 master and uncensored. If someone can find that movie on the Playstation disc then its there ^^ I just dont know how to actually obtain it in the game :/ its funny just after so many years this game has still secrets and censoring controversy going for :D

salut. Scuze ca dau reply dupa atata timp , dar am reintrat in febra RE odata cu iesirea remake-ului la 2 . Cat despre video-urile din PS1, le-am obtinut , compresia lor a fost cel mai mult problema cat si spatiu. Din cauza video-urile in color in formatul necesar jocului ( ca sa mearga in playerul jocului ) a crescut jocul la 2GB. Ce e bine e ca video-urile arata mai bine , au 30 fps-uri si vin in rezolutie de 640x480. Acum cu toate astea , am o intrebare. Cum stiu daca am varianta uncensored ? Fiindca cum ziceai si tu , video-urile necenzurate sunt in toate imaginile iso pe care le-am gasit. ( unele color altele alb-negru ). Am pana si o versiune pc de sangele e verde la zombi spre deosebire de rosu.

The first time I saw anything Resident Evil I'm pretty sure was an ad for the first game, in EGM, with the first zombie's screenshot. I thought it looked like shitty clown makeup, so I actually _entirely_ ignored the series until the 4th game, which I don't fully remember when/why I bought the PS2 release (glad I did, tho).

I can confirm from personal experience that the US Sega Saturn version of the game has the "gory ending" included. I don't really know the criteria for triggering it, but I've gotten it recently.

lucky for me, the fist version of resident evil i play was the original bio hazard so i met the censorship leter when i play the usa version and at that time i completed the japanese version many times. there was another censorship not mencionated in the video, in BH when you find a file you see the text and in the background image of the file you pick, in the RE you only see the text in a black screen, why is this? nobody knows...

Blitzstrk I've read that only the DualShock version of the Director's Cut has an altered sound track. So, what about the Director's Cut in regards of censorship? I'm currently playing the Japanese Director's Cut and the intro sequence seems to be black-and-white, but otherwise uncensored. Is there any new content in the Director's Cut apart from the game modes? Maybe new enemies etc.?

that is the french german of the version which might get the full uncut patch though worldwide but it had some writings on the wall from the original beta and alpha releases though.

character died, zombie got down to the corpse n begin to eat the flesh for quite a while, then back to the title screen. i think that was the earliest version i've ever played.

sorry, most companies either ignores steam/pc with this kind of games or takes a lot of time to put their games there (not to mention them being crappy ports). you know piracy. also consoles gives them more money. CVX only got re-released on PS4 recently

I'm not for censorship but I do believe it's what's implied that u don't see that's truly terrifying. The newspaper clips are scarier imo. I love the black and white better. And the new music aside from that infamous track is great. The old tracks were few and monotonous. They really pulled it down.

i think to get the gore ending you need to be killed by the boulder, see rebecca die by the hunter, die a lot and played 10+, i dont remember too well (also sorry for my bad english)

4:57 I have a prototype version of re 1 The date of that version goes back to February 8/2/1996 This version is the US version But it has green blood and auto aim And the controls are similar to the Japanese version Run with the X button and shoot with the square button And the debug menu is still in the game It's basically a developer version that was leaked several weeks before the game's release And it can even be played From start to finish i Post a shorts video about it on my channel
