@@BLVDKillz Japanese games importing American (and Western games in general) is actually pretty common too. A ton of games either aren't marketed in Japan (especially Xbox games) or are super niche. FPS games and full on violent action games are among the most imported. That and censorship on both ends, case in point, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance for example turning all artificial blood White (even though story-wise it *should* be Red at that point), and RE7 being quite censored in Japan where it comes to gore. RE2Make is gonna be another big one for western importation I feel.

0:35 Actually, there is an official reason for this. The answer comes from Resident Evil and Dino Crisis creator Shinji Mikami. Read this excerpt from an interview from the June 1999 issue of Next Generation magazine: NextGen: "Will the level of difficulty change when [Dino Crisis] is localized for the U.S.?" Mikami: "Yes, the puzzles will be a lot tougher." NextGen: "Why do you think U.S. gamers like their games more difficult than Japanese gamers?" Mikami: "I think the difference between Japanese players and American players is that Japanese players get bored with a game more easily. If they get too frustrated, they'll quit the game, so I just have to keep the players concentrated on the game and instruct them about what they're supposed to do next - otherwise, they won't complete the game. But U.S. players will always try to feel like they have achieved something themselves, on their own, or of their own effort. That's completely opposite to the way of playing video games in our nation. So right now, we design the game for a Japanese level of difficulty, with plenty of hints, then we modify it for the American market afterward." It's funny how he thought the opposite of what other Japanese game companies did in terms of game difficulty to western gamers in the 80s and 90s. Nintendo and Square, for example, made games like Super Mario Bros. 2 and Final Fantasy IV easier in the west, as the original Japanese versions were thought to be too difficult for us westerners.
@sudacagamer
@sudacagamer 5 лет назад
There are countless examples of harder games in the US. Even on the NES days. It`s interesting what Mikami said but there was always another reason, and that was because of the renting videogame market (which didn`t exist in Japan). Games were harder so the player couldn`t finish the game too fast and he had to come back and rent the game again.
@Gaff.
@Gaff. 5 лет назад
I don't know if he's right or wrong, but I have to say, I generally find Japanese games _much_ more engaging, more thought-intensive, more strategic, and more challenging. Western games, when they try to do something similar, often miss the mark. Usually they're too easy or they don't know how to be hard without being enjoyable. Simple example, Dead Space 2 I think it was, its hardcore mode gives you only three saves. I love limited saves, but that's not how you do it. That's a gimmick mode. Bethesda added a hardcore mode to Fallout 4 and it was something like, you can't fast-travel I think? among other things. Just a bunch of stuff that didn't really sound like a good experience. Contrast this with something like Metal Gear Rising. Revengeance is a brutal mode to tackle without upgrades, or just the upgrades from one run. But if you really get your perfect parry timing down, it's often said to be easier than the next difficulty down. Then look at Evil Within. A lot of people don't like it but it's one of my favourites. A lot of people say it's too hard (well, they deflect by saying it's cheap, which it isn't). It's pretty unforgiving, and yet, you can sneak-kill the Traumas, you can one-shot Alpha Amalgam if you can hit it in the eye on its second form, you can blow up a bomb and make an enemy take the damage for you if they block the blast, and there are whole sections you can skip if you think outside the box. Maybe I have the wrong idea based on my own personal experiences, but it seems to me that Japanese developers are the ones that know how to make a hard game feel rewarding to take on, and they can make them _very_ difficult.
@CrimsonGear80
@CrimsonGear80 5 лет назад
Jason Sikes pretty sure they made games harder in the West most of the time because of the popularity of game rentals. Make a game harder, it takes longer to beat, a gamer may just end up buying the game instead of repeatedly renting it. Game rentals have always been non-existent in Japan.

Japan is really strict with its own content, yet they are also very protective or prideful of them and often dislike or flat out don't buy products made outside of Japan, not including Japanese products being produced in say, India or the like. It's a reason why Microsoft tried so hard to push the XBOX in Japan, and so many companies put a good portion of their marketing budget to Eastern Asia. For some reason, western bands and musicians are basically exempt from this social phenomena though. Japan eats western music up like crazy, especially music in or from Germany, North America, or England. Metal band and anything synth/experimental or industrial based especially.

Regarding the difficulty, I have the Resident Evil comics that came out in 1998, in one of which is an interview with Shinji Mikami (Director of the original RE). He states that when Biohazard was being rebalanced for international audiences, they increased the difficulty because Capcom bosses were worried that gamers would be able to rent the game and beat it easily, potentially damaging sales. Changes included removing the auto-aim (in the original RE only), lowering the amount of available ink ribbons (saves), increasing the amount of damage that enemies do, as well as remixing the enemy placements slightly, so that they are harder to run past. It's partly for the latter reason that speed runners often prefer to play the Jp version over the US one. It's in the same interview, iirc, that he talks about how the original Biohazard was initially planned to be a spiritual successor to Sweet home. He also briefly mentions other early concepts, such as a scene where one of your teammates, a heavily built guy with a bionic eye (I'm not kidding) would hold up a ceiling to prevent it from crushing you. This character evolved into Barry, and presumably that would have been the Jill sandwich scene, in one form or another. He mentions how one of the supporting characters would have been a young African American member of S.T.A.R.S., and he would have been the comedic one, to offer relief from the horror movie tone. That guy was cut completely, though his name was used for a character who was unseen until RE 0, the Bravo Team helicopter pilot.

So Japan...known for their love of tentacles porn & other forms of Hentai & extremely graphic anime found Resident Evil “too violent”? If that’s not an oxymoron I don’t know what is.
@ToshMackins
@ToshMackins 5 лет назад
the CERO company is not responsible for tv shows or porn and the age rating system is also different for tv and movies. CERO is only responsible for games that will be sold at regular shops and digital on consoles and the CERO certification is required. you need it. nudity and sex like in Witcher 3 or explicit gore like in Resident Evil 7 / 2 Remake is not allowed in japanese video games.

Apart from the Playstation version, no version of the original RE2 has ever been officially released in Germany. The green blood and black death screens you showed were only in the European Game Cube port for every country outside of Germany, like Autria and Switzerland (who follow different policies and rating boards), because surprise surprise, when the GC port arrived, the game was still on the Index. And you could switch to the uncut version by simply changing the Game Cube's system language to any other but German. Most chose English, of course.

Who cares about blood being censored. America's 4kids had Yugioh characters censor guns to threaten people with a finger of death.

@@aland7234 also I don't understand why change the color a blood if it's still Gorey. I remember Samurai Jack being pretty gory. Oh wait those were just blood of robots but still the spray of blood for another creature it is still technically blood and gory and I I'm looking at this in a child's perspective because I was a child who watched it and it was considered gory and bloody to me.

i hate censorship why do they think their sole audience are a bunch of babies, i thought at least some games in the west are horribly censored if it sexual in nature like oh no god forbid a breast or leg or something but gore thats okay though, or the the stupid region changes like why do they always have to look so grumpy for some reason. can't they be happy unlike japanese ratchet is a little too happy .

It always perplexes me that people say "The game is easier in Japan when usually it's the other way around." It's not. I actually can't think of many, if any games that are harder in Japan than they are in the US, with the possible exception of Mega Man 2. Whereas there are TONS of examples of the opposite.
@Valanway
@Valanway 5 лет назад
Mario 2/ "The Lost Levels" is the main source of that honestly. Post-NES, I don't think much of any Japanese games were harder. Devil May Cry 3 original is the most infamous of the cases of the US getting a souped up version because the west complained that the Japanese games at the time were too easy.
@DefinitiveDubs
@DefinitiveDubs 5 лет назад
@@Valanway Even in the NES days it was grossly uncommon. Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, TMNT, Shatterhand, all were easier in Japan. The only ones that were harder, that I can think of, are Mario 3, Contra and Mega Man 2.
