I know this is a whole 4 years old, but people are more sensitive to that sort of stuff in the West, just take a look at Twitter nowadays, it really doesn't take much to set them off so it's completely understandable.

I am Muslim. And I am a fan of the legend of Zelda series. The chants in the fire temple are actually calls to prayer and it's not allowed to play music during it.

I like the chants too, it feels like a hellish environment which fits the theme of the temple and music.

It's not strictly forbidden, but it's considered disrespectful to have music over it. They were just trying to show respect and avoid controversy by having religious content in the game.

VirusPF I can't speak for the others, but I know about blackface. I don't know any black Americans who don't know about Blackface. What we were saying was that it didn't come to mind to us when playing and I was in my late teens when playing OoT. I viewed the characters as having shadowed over faces because of their hats or hair. With the way Jynx looked when defeated in Stadium, she loses her hair. I thought of them in the same way I did Orco from He-Man. I think the only way I would've associated them with Blackface, was if they were acting moronic or stupid. Neither character did.

I know right? I had a version 1.0 of this game way back and always had to tell people about the Fire Temple chanting and Ganon's blood (as well as some of the regular enemies) being red!

i think censorship in video games is stupid. it doesn't need to exist. i had to buy south park: stick of truth from america because the Australian version (although rated 18+) had some stuff cut out. video games need to be released as the designer intended. uncut in all it's glory.

I think it was to play it safe. I am a muslim and I am glad that they censored this. The reason I say this is because in our religion music should not be played during prayer. To put things in perspective playing music with our chants is like showing a muslim eating pork. I personally am not offended. But I don't want other muslims to go through this.

I am exactly the same, while I'm more open minded to similar situations I completely understand why it was censored and it is for the best, Nintendo played it right there, I think it would be reasonable that when companies use chants from different languages in the future to try and do some research of what they actually are saying so nothing like this would occur again.

AG I actually don't mind. Think of it this way, some parts of my religion is in one of the greatest games of all time. Besides, OOT kicks so much ass that it doesn't matter anyway.

There's still blood. It's just darker, seemingly dry blood to indicate that it's a very ancient temple

Also in some rooms in the shadow temple they replaced the skull and bones wall floor pattern with dirt.

Have you played the free to play Dota-clone on Steam called Smite? It uses religious characters from still practicing and popular religions as characters to beat each other over the head with. Religion shouldn't be a protected thing from outside ideas or criticism.

I'm not saying religion (or any world view) should be protected from criticism. The more discussion and debate about religion the better in my opinion. I'm talking specifically about when a game uses a religion's symbols purely for entertainment purposes, without any regard to the deeper meaning. For example, the anime Evangelion purposefully uses lots of Christian imagery. Why? Because it looks 'interesting and exotic'. Never mind that these symbols have incredibly deep meaning to many people including myself. It's irritating and I have no interest in the series as a result.

Jamus C I was a Christian for a long time till the early-mid 2000's and I had copies of Evangelion and Trigun on DVD . (I think I still have the original End Of Evangelion DVD somewhere.) It was a cool and exotic thing to see those symbols in other media. You see, I was one of those people that don't take the Bible 100% seriously and interpret it literally on all counts, which is pretty common seeing how most Christians pick and choose the rules and stories for themselves. That's what happens when Christianity had the Reformation with Protestants splitting from the Catholic church. You don't get a monolithic religion, but many little sects that believe in many different things from those teachings, which means those symbols can be interpreted in many ways. (The same cannot be said to how hostile to outsiders Islam is right now.) So the symbols only have meaning depending on who you talk to. Evengelion took Christian symbols in a way that horror movies did in the 70's, using parts of religion as part of a plot device. (The Exorcist being the most famous example.) Eva or The Exorcist wasn't bashing on Christianity or saying it was a religion of evil (not that I remember since its been 10+ years), but using it to further a larger story. The symbols may have meaning and it can be used to further the story, but it isn't necessary to have the full context and scope of it. Eva used a version of Christianity that came from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest surviving papers on early Christians, which a lot of modern Christians don't read or use in their beliefs. And I did read in an interview that if director\producers of Eva had known that it was going to be as big as it was, they would have done more research to integrate it into the plot. I think some people may have gotten offended at their religion being used in such a way, but that would still be a small minority wanting to be protected from outside ideas, influence, or criticism. So yes, you can use religion and religious imagery as part of entertainment. Just don't be surprised if you get hostile protestors if you make something criticizing said religion. (This only makes sense if said religion is relatively peaceful.)

Perhaps it was offense at the symbol of the cross symbol being used in a way that mainly about aesthetics with none of the deeper meaning of suffering, forgiveness and redemption.
