Resident Evil 4: The Villagers' ORIGINAL Religion Explained

While many believe that the villagers of Resident Evil 4 adhered to Catholicism (or something close to it) before the resurgence of the Los Illuminados Cult, some fascinating details of the RE4 Prequel Book (Biohazard 4 Incubate) suggest that the villagers practiced a religion inspired by real-world Celtic paganism. The eighth passage of the book alludes to 3-4 key practices that align with the "Beltane" festival of pagan belief (also known as May Day). This adds a new level of depth to Resident Evil 4's world-building, as the culture seems to resemble a remnant pagan commune that only partially adopted Catholic ideas (and would be overtaken by the return of Los Illuminados, through Saddler's manipulation just before the events of RE4). It only begs the question: will these world-building elements be preserved and even added to in the Resident Evil 4 Remake?

I remember your in depth analysis of the pagan themes in the Incubate novel - it's great to see it summarized for this video. Would be curious to see if there's any crossover between the Romanian village in 8 and the Spanish pueblo in 4. Beyond Miranda perhaps having a connection to Los Illuminados, I also see the hints at far older ruins in both games as alluding to an even more ancient overarching civilization. Perhaps the Progenitors of the Family had used these villages as bases to exploit bioweapons, and the occult villains are (perhaps inadvertently) reviving these ancient practices. Also, while I know Resident Evil is the main focus here, have you considered branching out into The Evil Within? What's struck me over time is the realization that TEW had at one point been intended to be set in 20th century Spain and there's still a lot of elements left over from this concept before it was roughly changed to be modern day America: WW2 weapons, newspapers dating back to the 60s, archaic and European-inflected architecture, overabundance of Spanish names, the relationship between pagan villagers and landed aristocracy, and an ancient sinister cult with ties to eugenics circles. In other words, it may have been intended to serve as a prequel to the story that was being set up in RE4. Maybe some more insight could be gleaned from that series?

I still can't believe I found someone talking about it. Of course the cult around Las Plagas has some Catholic Aesthetic. One scene I will never forget is the "Morrir es vivir". Although it's a blood ritual, it reminds me of the traditional form of the Holy Sacrament Adoration, where the priest and the assembly face the same direction.

Great video, i just thought about something today the original game is structured with chapters and a chapter endresults screen i hope they removed that aspect in the remake it was very distracting and felt odd the remake should be seamless like Resident Evil 2 remake

:) Judging how the cabin fight (Ch. 5) snippet looked, it looks like more seamless transitions (at least between cutscenes and gameplay) have been actively accounted for. For chapters and end results, we'll have to see.
