responding to some criticism about team cherry

Took me a few seconds to realize you were talking about level designers for Geometry Dash and not the developers of Hollow Knight.

it's hard critizing Cherry team because, like, the creators are all really talented and people take criticism as though you're saying those creators are bad even when that's not at all what you mean. the creators are good, but it just misses the vision behind it. it's like making a painting vs making a photo - yes, sure, a photo can have just as much detail and functionally looks just as good if not better. but the point of art is the meaning behind it, the motivation and inspiration to make it. that's what really separates Cherry and Mindcap - Cherry pumps levels out for popularity, Mindcap hosts levels that he's passionate about. Mindcap's levels all have a specific idea, a point to make. he chooses creators based on how well their style suits that kind of level. Cherry team levels.. well they have a theme for looks and that's about it. The picks for creators are mainly just looking who the best (or just most popular) creators are and paying them off to get them on. this does get most of them to have a good amount of detail, sure. but it just feel like only that - a husk, it has the detail but no reason for it to be there. if you try to do ""objective"" level ranking, going off of detail and intricacy, yes they're fairly good. but that's the only thing holding it together.

i feel like parallax not reaching out to you was justified, if i'm being honest. the response was no effort to attack you or disprove any of your points, but rather to question some of the reasoning you provided in the video and give culuc (the new representative of cherryteam iirc) another opportunity to speak. reacting to the points in the video isn't uncharitable because he didn't think or act like the points he was discussing represented your thoughts on the matter perfectly. i guess you could say the point wasn't to prove that you're a bad person and that your beliefs surrounding art criticism aren't worth listening to, but rather to add onto your video with a different perspective. including you in it would be a little redundant, i think.

yeah, Parallax does bring a fair point that your video was more about Vernam, rather than the cherry as a collective (which I myself kinda glossed over lol). Your video is still great, but Parallax' is a great counter opinion. Also, here's my interpretation of what Culuc meant after Parallax' explanation - "people who portray/behave themselves as an elite, do not fit into their own standards of being elite, which is having your levels be approved by vast majority".

I just wanna say i agree so much about your point about cherry levels not being exciting i feel like i know the entire level after seeing one part compared to someone like switchstep whose levels make me really excited because you can never know what happeneds next

To my eyes it's mindap's levels that are truly soulless. I've never understood the appeal of Limbo, or his older megacollabs. Most of them are a mesh of random parts from random creators, and only recently did his levels actually start to have a "theme". Cherry levels are the ones that are cohesive and have a point. Do I have any arguments for this? No, not really. Its just what I feel when I see those levels.

Tbh I think culuc's tweet was just a joke and wasn't genuinely trying to come up with an argument to discredit those elitists. That being said I can see why you and others interpreted that tweet as elitist

“Uncharitable to reach out to CuLuC and not me” Do you know what else is uncharitable? Categoring ALL of CherryTeam as Vernam. If you got a problem with vernam, say that, I understand that. But don’t miscredit all the work that everyone else put in. That’s just my opinion though.

what irritates me the most is how desperately cherry clings to the top demon bandwagon, especially since pointercrate has taken a backseat since 2.2 dropped. the game has become a better place than ever to express insanely cool level ideas, and difficulty isn't as intrinsically important to everyone as it's been in the past. even as someone who doesn't like platformer mode, i'm grateful for the influx of creators who are so passionate and creative in making levels fun and rewarding. cherry team is, for lack of a better term, holding us back. it's so frustrating that we, as a community, *refuse* let the pointercrate fixation die. cherry's just about the only high-profile part of the community that's clutching onto the artistic poison that is the demon list, and they'll continue to do so as long as it brings in views and attention, which it most certainly has. if they can gather attention for a remake of two top 10 demons that came out less than a year ago, then what reason do they have to give it character and soul? it's all really telling of their motive behind making levels. megacollabs have struggled to find their place in the community for a long time now, and the emergence of big teams like apteam and cherry only make things worse. i'd love to see a day where an arbitrary number on a list isn't the community's sole creative driving force, but so long as groups like cherry team keeps doing what they're doing, i don't see that happening. i hope it's not hyperbolic to say that cherry team prevents this game from progressing creatively.
