Restoration of 1951 Vincent Rapide - Part 91 - Gearbox & Primary Case Oil

I hope you will enjoy this 5-minute-fix video in which I will be replacing the oil in the gearbox and checking the oil in the primary case. There will be more videos to follow in this little mini series.
Please do let me know if you see that I missed any or have any comments about this routine!
Please note that this is how I approach some of these maintenance jobs, so please remember to consult your owners manuals.
Gearbox oil level:
1) Remove the gearbox oil filler cap
2) Remove the dipstick
3) Check the dipstick
4) Go to the timing side
5) Remove the transmission drain plug (5/16" WW)
6) Let the gearbox entirely empty (ideally overnight)
7) Measure how much oil was dropped
- to check how much was lost and to compare with how much to put back into the bike
8) Anneal the copper washer (if applicable)
9) Refit the drain plug
10) Refill it via the dipstick hole
11) Check oil level
Primary case oil oil:
1) Remove the inspection cap
(Engine should be warm but do a quick check of the primary chain)
2) Look inside, just to see what the level looks like
3) Remove primary cover to let the oil drop from underneath
4) Remove the level plug at the bottom
4) Add oil into inspection cap and watch as it drains out the level plug.
5) Once the oil stops coming out of the level plug, re-fit the level bolt/screw back

Hehe, yes those are all 1 Quart containers. I get a little mixed up sometime, trying to convert from Imperial measurements.. and we won't even get started on Whitworths 😉 best wishes, Mike

So many beautiful features on the Vincent, I'm a bit surprised there's no drain plug on the primary case.

The thinking was that it could be caught and broken off on a curb. These is a boss in the casting for a drain plug, but it isn’t drilled.

I’d try a vacuum pump to extract primary oil. Easy. Beautiful machine!

Hi Mike, John Reilly from Victoria. Thanks for making these highly watchable video. Doing my first oil change on a ‘new to me’ Rapide. Have had a beautiful Comet, like you, for a number of years but now have a Rapide to take up the last bit of any spare time I may have had 😅. Anyway, when are you coming up to Victoria?

Mike my biddies in VOC in Vancouver tell me that the oil should only just be touching the bottom of the dipstick or excessive leakage may occur.

Mike, ,maybe use a syringe with a flexi tube to remove most of the primary case oil??

Ignore the level marks on the gearbox dipstick. The correct level (2 pints) just touches the bottom of the dipstick. If you use the marks, it will have too much and probably leak into the clutch.

Presumably, they were meant to show the correct level, but they don’t and this is widely understood amongst owners.

Thanks a lot Geoff and KMP523. I appreciate it. It should be good with the amount that I put in. I put in the equivalent of 2 imperial pints (i.e. 2.4 US pints or 1.2 quarts). I'm also running a wet clutch, so if some oil does find it's way into the clutch housing, it should be okay. Thanks a lot for letting me know. Best wishes, Mike
