I'm currently balls-deep in a restoration of 1970 yamaha ht1, and there have been a few things on your Suzuki I've envied because they were so much more intact than mine; the tank however is not one of them. Luckily, my Yam tank had only surface rust and a couple very small dents, interior pristine. Thanks for the vid! I enjoy your sense of humor.

phosphoric acid is my preference not as harsh on the metal and leaves a nice silvery coating that protects from future rust. It used to be called prep and etch, It can be found at Home Depot they have changed the name to concrete and metal prep but is the same product. Awesome videos. Your hard work will pay off in the end, those vintage bikes sure are fun when done. Refreshing to see someone interested in the salvation of them old souls. Looking forward to hearing the bike roar to life. Good work

Agree on the Phosphoric Acid and 40/60 acid core. I did my tank with it and pressure checked it to make sure there were no leaks. I did not put a liner inside the tank because if they say "ethanol resistant", it is not ethanol proof. After a year or two the liner will get soft and start coming loose from the metal. I just went with the phosphoric coating and run non ethanol gas in my bike.

@@GoldGuyRides I'm sorry I don't speak english very well, what I tried to say was that restoring the tank was more expensive in materials and worktime than having a plant making one from scratch. But in the end it would indeed be sold for a lot more than what it costed you to repair it, cause they make a big profit. A tank like this cost maybe 10 bucks to make and sell for at least 80, more often 100 (talking about more common CG125 tanks).

You should use a cutting wheel to cut out the holey sections and weld in some 14 gauge sheet metal with probably a MIG set-up. The 14 gauge is thicker than the tank so you can keep your puddle focused on the sheet metal and avoid blowing out the tank. You’ll have a better looking tank that will last much longer

That liner he just used flakes and peals I just redid a tank off a 2012 Harley Road King for a customer. Fortunately there is a large opening in these new tanks so you can get your hands inside. I pressure washed the tank than hand sanded the rest of the tank sealer to bare metal the resealed it with an old product called Kream. Save yourself some problems and use the Kream to start with. That other stuff looked old house paint the way it chipped and pealed.

We used Naval Jelly to completely strip metal in the old days, I think aircraft stripper is the same thing. When you clean an old tank put in some nuts and bolts then you can “stir” it once in a while. Aircraft stripper will completely strip the metal on the outside of the tank. The acid core solder is what you need for metal repair. I would have bought a tank on eBay! Or got out the cut off wheel and welder and fabricated a new tank...????... That one will definitely leak, probably while you are out on a trail somewhere. Live the videos, keep em coming!

The gass tank was dissolved by the acid that's why you have so many holes use viniger next time.Steel can be dissolved with a diluted solution of nitric acid and water. The chemical make up of nitric acid reacts to the iron in steel, producing iron nitrate and hydrogen gas. As this chemical reaction takes place, the steel begins to dissolve.
@StevenStGelais

What should be followed up after vinegar? Do we need ALC after to clean vinegar out?

@@StevenStGelais vinegar can be cleaned out with alcohol or normal gas, you can also use water with soap but u need to dry it out right after cleaning it
@kuehjo
@kuehjo 3 года назад
Vinegar is still an acid - specifically acetic acid. It’s not as strong (low in pH) as muriatic acid (which is hydrochloric acid) - so it works slower. But the end result is EXACTLY the same. The holing is not the fault of the acid used - its an indication of how much oxidation (ie, rusting) that steel has already gone through. You can’t turn back time on the oxidative process - only arrest the damage already done.
@kuehjo
@kuehjo 3 года назад
And by the way - in case I wasn’t clear - neither muriatic acid (pool acid, btw) nor acetic acid (vinegar) are nitric acid - which is a different beast entirely.

Probably the only way to fix this tank is by brass brazing. Personally, I'd rather throw it away. If I still had to repair the tank somehow, I'd use a laminating fabric to relaminate the whole tank. Then I would coat the inside with a two-component gasoline-resistant resin (or paint).
