This week I'll restore an antique letter scale. It is rusty, paint is coming off and the brass is badly oxidated. One of the legs has broken off at some point and someone welded it back on destroying the decorations on the body. I'll try to remake those as well. More detailed explanation bellow:
SOME OF MY TOOLS:
RUST REMOVER: www.mc-51thebestrustremover.c...
CARBIDE DREMEL BIT: amzn.to/2PNPUSk
DREMEL FLEX SHAFT: amzn.to/2DQnAda
TINY DIAMOND BIT FOR DREMEL: amzn.to/2PQIC0o
POWER FILE: amzn.to/2URHvPq
CHUCK NORRIS’ TOOTHBRUSH: amzn.to/2YfXUj2
CORDLESS DRILL: amzn.to/2Wois77
BETTER ROTARY TOOL: amzn.to/2WF75I6
PRESS FOR ROTARY TOOL: amzn.to/2Uiv1Eu
2-AXIS TABLE FOR THE PRESS amzn.to/2WPkttl
MY FILMING GEAR:
MAIN CAMERA: amzn.to/2JvtKox
MAIN TRIPOD: amzn.to/2OlpYgn
MICROPHONE: amzn.to/2I80iDz
VIDEO LIGHTS: amzn.to/2FpJDaB
MAIN LENS: amzn.to/2Fm8yMk

I started by using a dremel with flex shaft and carbide bit. I used whatever was handy to punch out the rivets but now I have punch a real set for future projects. It was really important to make sure as little pressure is applied on the enamel as possible. The enamel was in ok condition and breaking it would have ruined the project. I used holes on the table and drilled some holes to a block of wood to allow me to punch the rivets out without harming the enamel.
After dissassembly I used MC-51 rust remover on the body. This time I had it in a cold shed for a day (warm rust remover would be much faster). The russt came off beautifully. Then I used paint stripper and wrapped the body in plastic. This makes the paint stripper even more effective. After couple of hours all the paint came off in with just Chuck Norris' toothbrush. For the brass parts I used a solution of salt and vinegar. This only took maybe 30 minutes to work.
For painting I used gray primer fro the base coat and then 2K Black spray paint. The manufacturer is Car Rep. It seems to be rether senstitive to temperature. The can needs to be warm for good results.
I then used jewelers viseI bought to make hammer new rivets from 2.5mm brass wire. When attaching the rivets I needed to start with a few hard blows. This will lock the rivet in (the whole rivet will become thicker). After this I used only the minimum force to widen the other side on the rivet. I had to be very careful to not have the enamel touch the anvil as I hammered. It would have sucked to ruin the project at this point. I was very careful that the whole weight of the piece was on the rivet I was hammering on.
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe, like, comment and share as that helps me to create more content in the future. All feedback is welcomed as that is the easiest way for me to improve my work and videos. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments I try to answers some of them. Also consider supporting me on Pateron You will always be able to get in contact to me trough there.

On a "scale" from 1 to 10 this is a 11! And about the vise, I am not sure if it´s vise to do that... since it's a working tool. But on the other hand, why listen to me? I am not the vise guy, you are!

vinegar alone will clean brass. Heat it to near boiling and it does a nice, fast job. In this case it would also help get rid of any remaining lacquer on the brass parts, since they were originally lacquered. Keep the vinegar solution after you heat it, in fact you can leave it on the heat a bit longer than needed, after the parts are removed to reduce it further. The acid in the vinegar is what does the trick, and it has a higher boiling point than water, so ir you heat the solution to the point where it's just steaming, it actually gets stronger.

You know, if you fill your diagonal cutters with silicone sealant, let it cure & then cut it with a razor, the silicone will help hold on to whatever you're cutting instead of it flying across the room. The scale looks great!

Beautiful restoration work. Wish I could find a scale like that. You’re also the only restorer I’ve seen that uses brazing rod to make rivets. I’ve been using brazing rods for years to make rivets for my projects. By the way your Dremel/rotary tool either needs a new chuck, ($6 Australian on EBay) or you’ve cleverly wrapped it to prevent damage to your project. Great work. Really enjoyed it.

clear lacquer that brass, and actually you can clear the whole thing. sometimes what I like to do is paint the iron part, then sand the paint back off with a flat block, leaving the paint in the lower places, then polish the rest with flat blocks until I get it pretty, then clear coat it Makes it much more decorative, and lets face it, tho it works, at this point it's more decorative than useful.

@tootall5559
@tootall5559 5 лет назад
@@OddTinkering No great idea there, the lacquer was originally done to the brass. That's where the heat comes in, it gets it off. I don't do a lot of tools, but I restored hundreds of vintage lighters, They usually have a clearcoat on them or partially on them. Ever see an old Ronson lighter that looks white or cream color, even tho it's supposed to be silver plated? That's the old lacquer turned bad. It does that if it sees a lot of sunlight. Sometimes the ones that are pure white or cream are actually easiest to restore so far as the finish goes, the lacquer protected it, when it comes off what's underneath it is beautiful. ON those, other than getting the lighting mechanism in shape, I would mostly just reapply fresh lacquer. The ones that have gone black in places but are silver or white in others, the black is where the lacquer is worn off. Sometimes I spend way too much time making stuff look pretty, but it's my time, and I enjoy it, especially when it looks like crap at first but comes out beautiful again. You seem to enjoy that too. I don't know where you found a piece like this, but now that it's restored, you can get 75 to 100 for it.

I love the original black paint job, but I think it would have looked bangin' if you had used grey hammerite. Also you should look into a product called Nevr Dull, and no that's not a grammatical error, that's the way the company spells it. I've used it for years and sweat by it. When it comes to polishing metals nothing else works quite as good. Either look on line for it or go to your local hardware store. I guarantee that they will have it in stock. If they don't, let me know if you've got a P.O. Box and I will try to get some out to you.

Nice job! Your videos are always amazing and amusing all at once. I have some questions: 1. For the white ruler, would retrobrighting be useful? (The hydrogen peroxide and LED lights you’ve used for the video game consoles) 2. How much does the Ducktor weigh? The Ducktor scenes are always one of the best parts of your videos. Keep up the great work!
