All I gotta say is I love seeing a famous artist who has the money capability to bring it to a shop and get it fixed actually working on their own vehicle to fix it. Love it. You’re doing great. Keep it up. Can’t wait to hear more new songs and see this build get even better.

A couple things to remember before starting an old machine: 1. Always go through the fluids and change them, especially the oil. Oil can oxidize after sitting a long time and turn acidic. Also there could be some water in the oil that will emulsify (turn to a milky substance) when you pump it. Or there could just not be enough because of an old oil leak. 2. Degrease everything to know where you have any new leaks (oil, water, etc.) because a clean surface is easier to track where leaks come from. A pressure washer at a wand car wash is perfect for this - just put it on engine clean or whatever they call it. 3. Assume nothing is right! Honestly, this one has saved me so much time and would have saved you time as well. The machine was mothballed for some reason and it could be as simple as some shade tree mechanic screwed it up. 4. When a problem arises (and it always does), start at the source and go from there. Like when you were trying to figure out if you had spark, the easy way is to pull a spark plug from the engine, put it in the plug wire and press the bottom of the plug (the part that goes into the engine) against the engine. Look while you crank and you should see a spark, and if your plug wires have lost insulation, you'll feel the spark too! If you don't have spark, ensure you have voltage at the battery, then start going from there. Check for voltage going into the distributor. Wherever you lose it is your problem. As far as the distributor, I've filed points before and set the dwell. Dwell is how long the points make contact before breaking. It's kinda like setting the engine timing using the distributor, except it's setting it's own timing to make sure the spark plug gets power at the right time. Also you should lube the rubbing block (the cammed shaft the plastic piece from the points rides on). BTW, you should replace the condenser when replacing the points - that was always the recommended parts to change. Have you rebuilt the carb to clean out the varnish? Gas solidifies quick in a carb. Also pull the fuel lines and push compressed air through to clean the junk out so you don't plug the carb again. As far as the coolant leak, I'd be willing to bet it's any gaskets and especially anything rubber (coolant lines, thermostat housing, etc.). Head gaskets only blow when something pretty major happens. I'd leave that for absolute last and that is sometimes an easy test. With a cold engine take off the radiator cap and start the engine. If you see bubbles and especially if you see the coolant level increasing you know you have a head gasket failure. Also if you coolant smells like gas, it's probably a head gasket. Oh, BTW the smog pump wasn't pumping exhaust into the engine I don't think (they were all removed by the time I got the vehicles) but instead they pumped air into the exhaust to sorta burn the exhaust from what I understand. Fuel, Air, Heat - that's all that's needed to make an engine run. I hope this helps you in getting this old truck running again. Good luck and keep having fun.

@wyattpalmer2575
@wyattpalmer2575 4 года назад
Drew Kelsey not everything is that bad on it I’m rebuilding a 47 gmc with a inline 6 like his and all we did was clean a dirt dobbers nest out of one of the cylinder and it cranked right up but I can agree with you if they want to put another couple hunert dollars for each thing they need to do
@drewkelsey2038
@drewkelsey2038 4 года назад
@@wyattpalmer2575 didnt say it was that bad, frost plug kit is 25 buck and about 3 hrs and flushing the block is 3 gallons distilled. But if your gonna save a 47 year old piece of iron dont short on the cheap stuff
@drewkelsey2038
@drewkelsey2038 4 года назад
And it kind of matter, between a 235, a 250, a 261, or 292 CID bore and stroke differentials on essentially the same block manifests heat and abuse but instances are different just sayin. Grandpa always said if your gonna do a job be thorough and detailed, do it right or dont do it. Obviously not for everyone, just my perspective. I'm sorry

In line fule filter ! In my 85 it helped. Gas in carb. Lighty cover with hand. is had to suck harder. Check the fule lines to see if there is a twist.... Took me forever to find that treat... All in all I did new tank. New lines. Fule pump in tank. Pump on side of block. Mechanical and vacuum spark advance dis cap. New carb wires plugs and she was a beauty. I'm not a mechanic but I sure had fun learning. Now I have a 07 and don't have a clue how to work on that. But guess what, I'll try to learn and thats all you can ask for. Egr is to effectively lower the displacement of an engine to use less air, less air is less fuel. Regen is when the computer dumps fuel into the exhaust stroke to burn out the soot that gets caught in the diesel particulate filter. I'm not sure how that reduces emissions but it makes the yuppies happy.
@morrisan92
@morrisan92 4 года назад
Not exactly...EGR is used as a nonreactive gas to add dilution to the fuel-air mixture. This reduces combustion temperatures which reduces NOx emissions. You're right about regen. The soot in the DPF needs to be burned out every so often to reduce the restriction through it. Lower restriction equals better fuel efficiency
@thefordmaniac
@thefordmaniac 4 года назад
Egr also lowers the need for higher octane fuel. Newer engines run hotter than old ones. Egr is actually an important thing to prevent detonation.
@thesnottynosekid9985
@thesnottynosekid9985 4 года назад
EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. It takes some exhaust and puts it back into the intake to burn off Some emissions in the exhaust to reduce pollution. It's not very effective. It does not lower the displacement of the engine the displacement of the engine is the amount of space that the piston takes inside the cylinder from the bottom of the stroke to the top of the stroke how you thought and EGR would lower that is strange. The other thing you are talking about Is the DPF which stands for diesel particulate filter what that does is it catches soot from the exhaust and when the filter starts to get clogged it switches to region mode which uses DEF diesel exhaust fluid or diesel fluid itself to burn off the soot that is caught in the filter and turn it into ash. That's how that stuff works.

@@thesnottynosekid9985 alright since you went there. EGR lowers the volumetric efficiency of the engine. It doesnt do anything to burn off more emissions. Its designed to use less air and fuel to reduce power when its not needed, ie cruising on the highway or idling. I know it doesn't effect the displacement of the engine, but it does lower the amount of burn able air that can fit into the cylinder at bdc Def is a completely different system. The fluid has nothing to do with the dpf. Def is injected farther down the exhaust to change the chemical compound of the exhaust to carbon dioxide and water. Dpf regen injects fuel into the exhaust stroke to raise temperatures to burn out the soot

You can set the points with a match book or business card. I'd replace the points coil and condenser
