I restored this on to look as close to factory as I could, that being said I really do not know what this Estwing hammer looked like when it was new, just what I believe it should have look like. I believe this style of Estwing hammer had a waffle face, but I already took a lot of metal off cleaning it and was afraid of making it really of balance.

I’ve recently just purchased a second Estwing as my first one I got at 18 (10 years ago) has the handle coming off, and my new one also has 2 radically different claw sizes!

I wonder if the owner of that hammer modified the claw so that heavier nails would be gripped closer to the handle? Maybe he was pulling a lot of heavy form nails, since you found concrete on the claw surfaces. Nice restoration.

Did not have any tooling marks on it, but never thought of wear from use over time, that is a good thought, thanks.!

I have a 16 ounce rip claw that I've had for many years, a brand new 15 ounce ultra series rip claw, and a 12 ounce rip claw that is many years old too, all Estwing hammers. The 15 and 16 ounce have uneven claws like the hammer you worked on here. The 12 ounce has symmetrical claws and rings so bad I stopped using it when it was new. In recent years I have read that a lot of Estwings ring, and a remedy for that is to grind some metal off one of the claws to make them uneven, eliminating the tuning fork effect that makes them ring. When I come across that 12 ounce, I am going to remove some metal from one claw with an angle grinder and see if that stops the ring. I enjoyed your video, it was clear and easy to follow.
@djstoolrestorations
@djstoolrestorations Год назад
I was told by an old framer about what you said about the ringing, and I have not known about and or not noticed it, I will look for it on another hammer when I find one! I am glad you liked my video, my videos are long, but I hate to leave something out that someone may need to see, plus you fast forward all you want!!!!!!!!!
@k1hasard
@k1hasard Год назад
@@djstoolrestorations I like longer videos that include details that some skip over. I looked at the pictures on Estwing's website of the 15 ounce Ultra series rip claw hammer that I have and even on the manufacturer's website you can see in the closeup of the claws that they are not even. So, I guess that must be intentional because they wouldn't put an imperfect hammer as a sample on their own website. Make your videos the way you feel they should be. I'm sure I'm not the only one that likes longer, detailed videos.

I was always a fan of wooden handles hammers. But I gotta say that a old worn handle sure is beautiful. I had 1 estwing. It would ring every time you hit a nail. Very annoying. I turned into a Vaughn guy, the very few times someone else used my hammer of course they break the handle.

I think you can do it pretty easily; I would take a sanding disk about 60 grit and take off and shape it a little at a time, and also, I would try an all-steel hammer to you might find you like it more than you think, it does not hurt to have more than one, just remember to work it a-little at a time and feel it in your hand, I have known framing contractors that have fine-tuned their hammers to make the feel better when they were swinging them.

Hi Sir, do you restore Estwing hammers as a partime gig/ job income for your self. I'm Peter from Australia I love the Estwing hammers I have two of them a 20 ounce for light work, and a long handled 24 ounce for heavy work. I love to swing a hammer at work. G'day to you PeterHarding

I do not restore for money; I have cleaned some up for some friends, I am working on one today for a friend, and I think it is a 20oz, I do not get to swing a hammer like I use to, I work in a facility that is fire rated, I build with 5/8 sheetrock and metal studs, they will not let me make cabinets any more, they are always in a hurry and buy cheap Ikea type made crap, I use tools of all kinds every day, tools for me make me money or save me money!

They do not make replacements or warranty it, I used leather to make a handle on a Estwing hatchet and I made a wooden handle for a 28oz Estwing framing hammer that was in my fire, if you want to see them I made a video on the hatchet or I can just make a video for kind walking through what I did, right now I do not have a hammer to restore, I am publishing a video Saturday morning where I make a leather handle on another hatchet, let me know if I can help?

Its GoJo original formula hand cleaner it is the only cleaner I buy; my wife uses it on my clothes sometimes when I get a lot of grease or oil on them, Wal mart and Napa are the only two places around here that carries it sometimes Wal mart is out for weeks, so I always buy two or three containers.
