When you said, that for every thing you fixed and restored was just as much for you as it was for your boat, was very well said and so very true. I bought a small house boat that had been negelcted, I spent more fixing and replacing things than what I spent purchasing the boat. I can in the faces of people that they feel I am wasting my time and money. They don't understand that I am giving the boat a renewed purpose, as the purpose it gives me. Thank you for saving that boat and giving her new life, and I am glad she rewarded you back.

The 10 hp Saab is truly a mythical engine.

Damsgård Motor Factory, later renamed Sabb Motor, was founded on April 30, 1925, by the brothers Håkon and Alf Søyland from Flekkefjord, together with Harald Svendsen. Until 1929 they lived in a sea buck at Damsgårdssundet, in Laksevåg near Bergen. The company eventually became too big for the place and moved to the present address Damsgårdsveien 113. The first engine, model A, was a 3 hp incandescent engine. One aimed for delivery to small fishing boats as there were many along the coast. The engine became popular and gained a reputation as reliable and reliable. The last of these engines were delivered in 1962. A slightly larger glow head engine was a 5-9 hp incandescent head motor that remained in production for 38 years. A worm motor of 4-5 hp was made from 1935 until the mid-1960s.In 1958, the first full diesel, a four-stroke of 8 hp, was named type G. This is the well-known single-cylinder SABBen that is found in countless fishing and leisure vessels. Eventually, it was equipped with a starting ring and adjusted to 10 hp. There were also made 2-cylinder versions of type G, rated at 22 hp. The motors have roller bearings and splash lubrication and an innovative propeller wing reversal system. In total, more than 20,000 of SABB type G have been made. It also existed as a stationary engine without a casing, and as an air-cooled lifeboat engine, then with reversing gear and fixed propeller. The latest engine of this type was manufactured at the factory in 2001. One then went in full with the marination of engines from other factories, as well as continued the production and adaptation of systems with rotatable propellers, gearboxes, and other specialties. The motors are then equipped with the Sabb mark. In 1971, the company was converted into a limited liability company and was named Sabb Motor AS. Sabb is now part of the Frydenbø Group.

I just love the sound those 1 cylinder diesel engines make.

My dad's boat had that engine when I was a small boy. I've taken it apart and rebuilt it more times than I can count. One word of caution though, when you start it keep your thumb on the same side of the starting handle as your fingers. It's not a natural grip, but the reason for it is that once in a long while the engine will kick back against the handle. This can break your thumb. It's not pleasant. Once when we took it apart and put it back ( the head gasket was leaking) we got the con-rods crossed, and when we started it it ran in reverse, sucking air in the exhaust and blowing smoke into the engine box. iirc we had to unbolt the fuel line from the injector to get it to stop... The con rods go from buttons on the crank case at the base of the engine, to the valve rocker arms on the top of the engine. The 'buttons' are fore and aft, and the intake and exhaust valves are port and starboard. When you had a little smoke in the engine box, I was SURE that you'd done this too. Enjoy her.

Wonderful story, thank you for sharing. My first boat - Osprey - was also a British design, by Philip Goode of Poole in the 1950s. I didn’t use her as my home, but aged 18/21 I cruised her extensively along the south coast of England, with no lights, no navaids, no proper life jackets, no radio and usually with no crew (they declined when they saw her 🤣).... and she had a rather dangerous Stuart Turner single cylinder petrol engine that was a detonation just waiting to happen. I loved that boat despite the bank-busting impact on my finances and the hazard involved in my voyaging. After a few years I went off to sea professionally and she went to a good home .... I was sad and relieved all at once. And/but - like you - I had learned SO much from that first experience of being my own captain, engineer, deckhand and cook. 😃

i just received your comment about the one below!. Thank you. I have done many endeavors in my lifetime but knew from my earliest ages that i was a free spirit and wanted to explore. I started drawing and won contest after contest from 1st grade forward. I eventually acquired a full scholarship to local Art University and have two majors. I have owned more than 40,000 dollars worth of musical instruments mostly guitars but taught myself to play 7 total instruments. I felt like my whole life that few people understood me? I always wanted more and seem to bore easily with the standard molds. Music for me was the conduit that lead me places. i was in a few local bands like the bluegrass genre. I keep searching for more. I simply must have the spirit of a wanderer? I have 3 grown daughters now around 30. I went back to university in my late 20s and studied computer engineering. that led me to a job in a chemical factory where i eventually quit from heavy metal poisoning that led to my health demise. I took about q0 years before i recognized the symptoms. By that time the damage was done . It took a few years to get proper help and diagnosis since i was too sick to work. Meanwhile the time between 35 and 45 was a blur. I never smoked or drank beer and drugs wasnt my thing. I just wanted to be free and enjoy the water somehow. After several years of pain and surgeries my organs have just become overwhelmed? My mind is good 50 with a near photographic memory capability and still draw portraits with just one look at a person. every detail of my youth i can recall like it was today. when i came across your channel; i saw the video of obtaining your boat for just 1.00. It amazed me! your so beautiful of spirit. Your attitude seemed so positive? I raised my children to think and love and be sensitive to everyone. I havent found most of my childrens friends to be the same way? You are truly different.You are obviously still very young. you have your entire life ahead of you. enjoy whatever comes to your imagination. What is more satisfying than being on the open ocean and exploring the open ocean and the world? You can enjoy making your own creative music and allow your soul to fly. Watching your channel seems pure and honest and wholesome. I adore how you treat others and your own self awareness. I have exceeded my life expectancy twice now already. I went back for a new prognosis just before Christmas. I was told again 3 to 6 months roughly . I feel so alive and so eager to explore like you- yall. I am so very proud of what i can see that you have done with your life. I dont have to know you to see a lot about you. You seem to have found another soul mate to explore life with you and it should net maximum benefits? Thank you again to read my thoughts. you have inspired me. Old diesel engines are unbelievable. I've had engines that have sat in a field for 20 plus years. Clean the fuel tank, new filter and fuel and away they go. I've got to say I prefer a combined cooling system. My boat has a heat exchanger (think car radiator), the raw water runs through this and cools the coolant that runs through separate chambers in the heat exchanger. This coolant then runs through the block instead of raw water. Either way Hopefully you have a strainer on the raw water incoming side to stop debris blocking the engine block passages. Loved your enthusiasm and how you watched and learnt your Father. All the best from Australia.

My dad still owns a 10hp Sabb fitted on a David Cheverton Champ 18 foot hull for the past 40 years. Its reliability is awe-inspiring. Ours has a 12v heavy duty Bosch starter motor . The 8 hp version of this engine was originally fitted with a 12v dyna starter coupled to the engine with 2 rubber vee drive belts on the inner fly wheel rim. This dyna starter ,as the name implies acted as a starter motor and then acted as a dynamo to charge the battery. The downside was the electro-mechanical voltage regulator, that with time gave trouble. Your videos are great, good job ,keep on learning and most importantly keep enjoying it.!!!!. I have the Sabb 8hp in my boat and had exactly the same issue with the frost plug. It was worn out completely, no wonder as the engine was build in 1969. I ordered a new one also in the UK, put it in and the Sabb still does his work. You can easily let it run dry for 15 minutes, the norwegian SAR did the same, they started their engine underway to their intervention point while the rescue boat was still onboard the masterboat. Great engines, I really do love them.

Fantastic engines, we in the uk still use them in Narrowboats on the canal system, well done to you and you're dad for persevering with the old engine.

Reminds me of the old putt putt Acadian Marine Engines back in the 60's and early 70's when I was a kid in newfoundland. Love these old engines. They are awesome.

And do we all know where the word Curlew comes from? It's a bird. We have lots of them around here in Oz. They are a ground dweller about knee high. They hide in plain sight by freezing. they have awesome camouflage. Their cry sounds like a baby is being strangled, it's a high pitch screaming. I actually love the sound of Curlews. So evocative of warm nights down in the cane fields, full moon rising with good friends.

I for one believe Sailing Magic Carpet (Maya & Aldino) is the most thoughtful and well-documented sailing channel of all other sailing RU-vid channels. Of all the hundreds of episodes I've watched of many different channels including- La Vagabond, Delos, Sailing Doodles etc...I do believe this one episode ( Restoring the engine on my $1 boat) tops all others. I realized I wanted to click the like button several times but, that's not what RU-vid allows..... but!!!!! I did realize I can "LIKE" every comment in the comment section since they are all so raving about such a great documentary. So, that's what I did! I don't know if that helps Sailing Magic Carpet but, it's the thought that counts too:) I wish you success!

WOW what a nostalgic Sound and imagery. I grew up in the '60s my dad starting up his 3hp single cylinder Yanmar diesel via hand crank. I remember him squirting lighter fluid into something, then holding the compression release while getting the crank turning, then letting go and hearing the old gal come to life. His boat was 22' motorsailer an Atkins design based on a Sea Bright Skiff hull which he had built in Yokohama, Japan in 1963/64. I'm weird but I LOVE the smell of diesel both raw and exhaust smoke a very nostalgic odor to me. Later in the mid '70s when dad was dreaming of having a 42' steel hulled Chinese lug rigged Pinky ketch custom made to sail the South Pacific the two motors he had picked for auxiliary power were the Japanese Yanmar diesel, and the Norwegian Sabb diesel. I still had the old Sabb diesel brochures up until about a year ago when while clearing out the old homestead before it sale I had to regretfully place them in the rubbish bin.

It definitely sounded stronger after the new cylinder head... I got my start as a diesel mechanic watching and working with my dad 30 years ago and have worked on all types of diesels from little guys like this to massive 16cyl engines, but I've never seen one of these Saab marine units. Such a great story to watch and yes, those challenging trial and error, how many times am I going to have to take this apart and do it again situations are the ones that really give you the learning experience and knowledge to master things. Looking forward to more of your Curlew III stories.

A truly amazing story told so well Curly is a living entity and will live on forever.

The guy next to my boat in the marina has a Sabb in his boat. Again, must be 50 years old and he pulled it apart and rebuilt it, as the boat had been lying, sunk before he bought it. It runs perfectly, though he has a dry exhaust and it's pretty loud. Just shows the quality of the engineering put in to them. Great video.

Well done with this video....I love these little Saabs and had the same 10hp engine in a 32' yacht.....although it had electric start....a wonderful little engine that ran for years.

Those sabb engines were quite temperamental, but music to ones ears when they ran well. I would be hard broken having to leave a boat like that. I think it was easier for the previous owner to give it away to some one who is full of passion, than to actually sell their baby for hard cash. Hope it is still getting the love it deserves.

This is a wonderful story as it unfolds a bit at a time.So many parts to this experience too. From possibly the least important part of initially trebling your investment,to the bonding experience between you and Curlew,and of course,between you and Dad.The learning curve that you raced right up,learning the ins and outs of that little power house engine,and all the other refitting work.If this story was in book form,I wouldn't be able to put it down'till I was finished reading.But as its narrated,you have me on the edge of my seat,waiting for the next instalment. This was a super cool video, as a kid i absolutely loved helping my dad restore the sail boats he bought, One of my great joys in life is the silence after a tack, when the sail fill and have been trimmed to a perfect curve, the silence right before she creeks and heals over and start to bite the waves.

Nice to see you and your dad improving this classic sailingboat. Altho i admire your working at the engine, you should consider another engine. An 2 cilinder small modern motor is more safe and easy to get sheap also second hand.

Hi, The cracking between the valves in the cylinder head is a common problem with saltwater cooled single cylinder sabb's if you want it to last then change it from an open saltwater cooled system to a closed freshwater one with a heat exchanger.

What superb boat looks solid the engine is like an antique steam train all bits going up and down but at least it is simple.. sails look superb I worked on my mates Volvo md2 which is very old and very well made and built heavily

I had this engine in a 8.30m Oostvaarder Dutch steel sloop of the late 1960ies , and it used to be of the most reliable and easy to handle marine diesels I ever had in any boat. But my Sabb engine had an electric starter.

Not even a default full fuel governed start. What a cute little diesel! Hand oiled rocker arms too. Man, how cool is that?

Hi Maya. I think that your pretty awesome and You are living the dream. Your lucky that your dad is there to help you along. One thing that should be done is send the cylinder liner to an engine shop and have it magnefluxed to see the crack visually. The head could also have been checked out by an engine shop. I have worked on a Sabb engine in FL. for a friend on a canoe stern sailboat named Idle Queen for a man named Harry Heckel who solo navigated the globe in her. The forward gear was slipping and needed shimmed so I removed it in the tiny engine room and ordered the correct shim and reinstalled it. On hisfirst trip around the globe the handcrank “shaft” had seized in South Africa so when he arrived back in St. Augustine FL. I installed a grease fitting at the casting that holds the shaft nearest the bulkhead at the removable handcrank. It worked smoothly after that. That engine went around the world twice and more. You have a Great boat. Thanks for sharing.

i am new to your channel but adore every episode that i have seen. i sort of feel like i know you after watching your experiences. I indicated in my first message to you tha i am living in Tennessee in the USA. I am not old but i am battling kidney cancer and only have one kidney left with issues. im in stage 4. i have decide to finish my life by living through the dreams that others are realizing now?
