Most of you probably know me (Maya) from the sailing videos I make with my husband Aladino. But this video is about what I was doing before I ever met Aladino, back when I still lived in Canada. It’s not like I’m that much older now -- I’m still only 22 -- but I think that this little $1 sailboat was the catalyst which propelled me into an adult life of adventure and courage. It’s one of the most important stories that has shaped my life so far. I’m going to tell it in chapters, so for now, here’s chapter 1. If you like this story, want early access to the next chapters, and would like to support these videos, please consider becoming a patron. www.patreon.com/user?u=13249792

What a beautiful story, Maya you have the skill to touch deep on people’s soul. Being a dad of two girls a little over your age opened a window to see how girls look at their daddy. That part was big on me And I can only imagine how good your dad was enjoying that time with you and your lovely boat. Keep sailing and doing what you do. You inspire people easily and deeply and it’s amazing to see how people can find better content in RU-vid than in the cable or satellite and with out paying a penny, just mentioning your angelical music, the tone and modulation of your voice and the way you tell stories. I am sure you are and always would be daddy’s girl. Thanks for all the good things you do.

What an exquisite story, Maya. Bonding with your father, at an age where most daughters do the opposite, is truly remarkable. Any therapist could write several textbook’s about the Electra Complex allusion. Any fool could see you and your father’s love, radiating through both your spirits and your accomplishments. Any normal girl would envy your closeness to their father at that age. Maya, how refreshing to see the joy in both of your souls. Think someone said, “a daughter having the approval of her father, will enjoy that anchoring her entire life.” If they didn’t, it needs to be said. This would make a great novel and movie. Much love, Old Ron

I’m 57 my dream is very different than yours And yeah I’m getting a late start As a very wise person once said It’s never to late to realize and live our dreams . I love your story ❤️ I think that’s true in part because it’s you that told it with your soft voice and kind sole A truly beautiful person to the core I’m living in Louisiana Working on paying off a few acres I have shops and I enjoy building and making things from scratch From wood work to metal fab and welding to painting refinishing So that common thread of true craftsman that runs trough us makers left me with a tear in my eye Thank you for sharing your story And validating my journey As I am so close to realizing My goals only to set new ones May you always have wind in your sails thank you 😊

What a wonderful story - I hope you sold it for $1.00 - I have this feeling that the oldies who made this wonderful gesture to you did so because they had reached a stage in their lives when they could no longer sail and were pleased to offer some young person a chance at the enjoyment they once had. Very heart-warming 😀

As I myself prepare to no longer call Squamish after four years of studies, I know that I will miss the industrial yet whimsical Squamish harbour. Many of those boats are still there and the tales of student living on a boat still inspire some on campus, myself included. All the best with your adventures around the world, and I will live virtually through your stories until I am ready to sail across the oceans.

I am struck by the obvious intelligence and sheer common sense of this young girl and you can almost see her by listening to her describe her journey, She does not disappoint. I am watching this because in my love of sailing videos I heard music that I liked and saw places that looked interesting. The more of her posted videos I watched the more I realized how exceptional this young girl was in a very crazy world. I can credit her parents for her values but still, you must choose your partners and path in life by yourself. Maya has chosen well and created a life that allows for her musical ability and love of exploring new environments to come together. An exceptional young lady by any standard but very special in today's world.

@@SailingMagicCarpet Maya - The more of your videos I watch the more I am impressed - Not to sound like a stalker - as at 77 - I have a lovely girl 40 yrs my junior who cares for me. The wonderful thing is to see your relationship with your father. (it was a real joy to see your enthusiasm over getting the motor to run again) I have a daughter that I was very close to as she was growing up but have not spoken too in over 10 yrs. Unlike your father, I have had a "checkered" past - but have no problems now. I just love your music - its soul - but in a classical way. thanks for replying.

I watched the video and tears came to my eyes. You are living the life I always dreamed of. The difference between you and I is that your parents encouraged and helped you achieve your dreams and my parents always told me why they weren't possible. Curtailing my lust for life and chances of ever living out my dreams and my full potential. So be thankful for a father who's encouraged and willing to help guide you through such important life changing events. I think your boat is amazing, almost as amazing as you! It must have taken a bit of courage to take a chance to live such and life....I applaud you! Thanks for these videos and sharing your amazing life with all of us! Happy New Year!

Really awesome hearing your story, I started off when I was a kid on my Grandpa's 18' cabin cruiser he built in 1962, fell in love with the water there, did the Navy thing, now I am living on a 42' Spencer that was built right there in Richmond BC. Looking forward to venturing up into those waters of your home turf this summer. This is one of the better sailing videos I have seen on RU-vid, thank you for sharing!

Though my first boat wasn't free, she was sold to me at a very reasonable price. She needed minor repairs and refurbishments that I quickly sorted out in the first few months. After 4 years, I decided that I wanted a newer boat and sold her for about what I had in her (tiny profit but profit nonetheless)...and searched for her replacement. Now, whenever I step onto the fore or aft deck of the replacement, though I do enjoy her, my mind always goes back to that first boat and how much I miss her and the memories that she provided. I imagine this is much the way you feel about Curlew III...

Such an inspiring story. Sometimes, the stars just align. The previous owner obviously just wanted to move on and end the ongoing bills. And you came along just as he was getting frustrated with the never ending dockage fees. You obviously inspired him to relinquish control of his baby to someone who shared his love for it.

A bond that will never leave! Another great video, Dad helped me build my first boat at the age of 18. Drew engineers' plans for things needed to patch up a succession of old boats, shared a beer and a paintbrush during winter maintenance. Was with me for the first "going foreign". He is sadly long gone. It is now my turn, I am now dad, grandpa, mentor, DIY guru and occasionally that crazy guy. Hopefully creating similar happy memories. Have a great xmas and new year. Luckily I also experienced the feeling of one's dream coming through. I purchased my boat about one and a halve years ago and am now in the process of refitting her. One big dream fullfilled and with that, many more were created. Unfortunately I do not have the possibility to share this with my dad, since he passed away quite some time ago. You put into words, a lot of the things that I cannot even begin to describe. Your ability of storytelling and videography is captivating and calming at the same time. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the world and giving up part of your privacy in the process. I wish you fair winds and welcoming shores.

Watching your story about CURLEW reminded me of another CURLEW whose story I am sure would interest you. Pauline and Tim Carr bought a 100 year old 28 foot gaff rigged motorless wooden boat called CURLEW and sailed her and raced her all over the world for 30 years. They settled on South Georgia Island (yes where Shackleton landed on the JAMES CAIRD) where they ran the museum. They published a beautiful book called 'Antarctic Oasis' about their time on South Georgia.
