Bob demonstrates how to restring a dual head trimmer. Using the Portland Electric Trimmer he reviewed a short time back, Bob shows you how to restring the existing spool, rather than purchase a new spool each time the string runs out on your dual head trimmer.

Congratulations, after 10 videos yours was the first one, from a search, that actually showed how to re-string these things. The other nine were worse than useless (or probably more accurately, I was the one that was useless). Saved me getting even worse a headache than I already had.

I'm 33 and college educated, but re-stringing my trimmer makes me feel like a total doofus. As soon as I take my string out of the holes, the whole thing unravels, and then I can't close the cover and the string gets stuck and doesn't feed properly.

I own this trimmer also and it does a pretty good job. As far as restringing goes, I thought one of the two ends of line followed the arrow, and the bottom end went in the opposite direction. I will give your method a try to see how well it works. Fussing with the spool and the line is the major drawback of these trimmers, anything that makes it easier is a life saver!

Thank you for this video. I received this trimmer as a gift from a neighbor lady who couldn't do her yard work anymore. Thanks for the vid. This trimmer has been a super pain in my a××. The problem I have with it is I wrap the spool and then turn it on and the string shoots everywhere wrapping around the trimmer. Ive cut the string individually and also have done it the way youve shown. I dont know if Im wrapping too tight or its not tight enough. The fact, yours worked perfectly gives me more excitement to get mine to work. If, I mess up again. Im chucking it because this will be like my 80th time lol. Trimmer makes me feel like a dufus. Thanks for the vid!!

Just respooled mine with .80 instead of .65 and did exactly as shown and did it no problem. You don't need the white sleeve, mine didnt have it. The key when spooling it is to keep tension the whole time so it doesnt unwind.

I get everything except WHERE the notch is to anchor before restringing. I have the anchor-notches, but where do you "hook" string initially? I have a Toro 14 inch Electric Trimmer (which I will never buy again--terrible instructions). Great video! Yours was only instructional that showed how to replace with needed details.

Ok the video is exactly how I string my unit. Then when I use the unit, the string comes out all at once. What is the problem. Had my son look at it and he put the string in and pooey the same thing happened. He said it looks like a part must be missing. The little white thing in the middle is down correct? Someone please help me find the problem. Thanks

I just bought my second of these trimmers at Harbor Freight for $26.99. I broke the first one by putting larger line on it that I had laying around and the heavier string caused the little plastic pins in the automatic feeder to shear off. I can probably replace that piece for cheap, but $27 for brand new ain't so bad. Just gotta make sure to only use the recommended line size to prevent this in the future.

I am glad youre doing this on the portland trimmer. I have an old electric i replaced wit this. I think buyin prespooled is a waste vs buyin the line. On my old single line it is pretty quick but its a bump feed trimmer.. Wondering if i can jump up to .80 without issues? My old bump feed calls for .65 and i accidentally fot .80 and spooled it and it works fine..

I need to add: @ 1:34 The "tabs" you push are not shown by the uploader, and they are not immediately obvious. They are on the side of the reel, and look like a square with a bunch of arrowheads on them (ie: >>>> ) They are the same color as the rest of the reel, so if you don't look closely, or there is not enough light, you won't see them. Once you push these... the reel comes off VERY EASILY. If you are struggling, you are not pushing on the right spot.
