Smallville tackles psychotic relationships this week as Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling revisit Season 3 Episode 14: OBSESSION!
After the guys gush over their time on set with the wonderful Sarah Carter, they analyze some of Tom’s noticeable giddiness in scenes throughout the episode.
Michael talks about the plastic butcher knife horror scenes and questions why Lana stays in her own psychotic relationship.
Tom gives props to certain choices taken by Allison and remembers how they got an honest reaction to the ‘Jonathan walking in on his son’ scene in the episode.

It's funny that you say that because I was thinking the same thing. Every once in awhile I think about getting the top tier for a month just to help out but unfortunately I have to put my bills first so I always write a review about the episode and Michael, Tom and Ryan's take just to help out in my own little way.

I really hope they might get Camille Mitchell on the show at some point. Can't remember if she has any "big episode" or if it'd just be her final one. I don't think she uses her natural voice although I could be wrong. Would be fun to hear what she felt/thought about playing this sort of background yet recognizable role and clearly bringing a lot of character and sort of campy humor into it.

Groooooomer haha. I think Michael's way of playing Lex is always a little flirty/suggestive, not always sexually but always in some way. Which works quite well for the character, but definitely makes him creepy with the young girls who are totally not in their 20s now.

Once again, Tom as Clark in "Resurrection" is another great performance since the stakes keep getting higher and higher with every single scene! "Who Cares?" isn't exactly the best way to go since a lot of scenes in this episode are foreshadowing the future of Clark as a great journalist and superhero!

It helps us relate to how much of a job it is to perform. Watching the finished edited product leaves the impression that it's somehow 'easy'; all done in one.

If he's able to superspeed through the radiation of that much Kryptonite before it gets to him, you'd think maybe he should just keep a lead blanket nearby most of the time, and he'll never have Kryptonite problems again :P Ah, such are the plot problems you have to ignore when a character has super speed...

First I have to say this. It's criminal how they slowly wrote Pete out of this series. Only ONE scene?!?! In that one scene, you notice there is absolutely no interaction with Lana. They are supposed to be friends but they don't acknowledge each other let alone hug. Lana does kinda hide behind him once the bomb is in play which makes it all the more awkward.

Hey. Doesn't he have lines in 2 scenes? :P (First showing support for Jonathan, then talking about the kryptobomb later with Martha.) But yeah, "Velocity" is kind of Pete's last hurrah I think. Yeah I would've liked to hear Ryan's shortlist, that scene with Jonathan was the first I thought of, bomb was second. Maaybe Lex and Dr. Tang talking would be a distant third, they have a decent chemistry, and Lex's look at the disappearing vial was kind of fun/ny. I agree with Ryan's pick though. Not only did Clark disappear from the sniper's scope, but the bomb disappears and blows up somewhere else, but nary a peep from the Sherriff about any of that!

Yeah it was a nice relief for Dr. Tang to get a follow-up to the previous episode. When Lionel was just like "nah we'll just leave him here to rot" I was thinking "so, I get you're in his pocket, but nothing to say about that?" Also clarified that she actually just ghosted Lex, whereas in previous episode it implied she was probably going to agree to the deal he proposed to her. Also Michael and her feel like they have a solid chemistry, I'm a little surprised he hasn't said more about working with her, maybe later.

@charlesjenkins2090 9 месяцев назад
So yes, this episode suffers seriously from, even by Smallville standards, absurd levels of contrivance. Its very much an interesting plot, and the characterizations of everyone are spot on. Emotionally its very compelling, and it ties together the Helen plot, the Lionel plot, the Morgan Edge plot, and the Adam plot and somehow manages to parallel it with the Jonathan plot. Its insanely ambitious. For instance, I am baffled at the idea that there is something strange about the brother getting more desperate not less after seeing his brother resurrected. That's the whole point! This resurrection drug gives false hope. It prevents loved ones from getting closure! Like if you know they can always just come back again doesn't that change the entire mental and emotional calculus of grieving and healing? You get whiplash instead of the finality of death, and so you have to deal with both grief and the desperation for your loved one to be saved simultaneously. I'll look forward to seeing the actor for the older brother again near the end of season 6. Also wait did Clark blow up the hospital's backup generator? Also, wait wait guys the entire hospital got saved! Anyway you guys are simply wrong - 1.5 roses
@jerodast
@jerodast 9 месяцев назад
Haha is that what that hole in the ground was, the backup generator? Perhaps. Interesting tying together all those threads although I would say the Helen plot simply turned into the Edge plot and frankly that has turned into Lionel's plot which is clearly also Adam's plot (although Lionel at least has 2-3 threads running concurrently), so it's not really "tying together" so much as "continuing". As they do. But this screams "filler villain/crisis" way too hard for me to see it as some grand scheme key episode.
@charlesjenkins2090

I mostly care how hard it is, unless it becomes the major subject. Sometimes it is nice to hear that big Hollywood stars also have their internet blow out on them. Mine does all the time recently and my boss really doesn't care. Makes it easy to relate 😊

Love this podcast and y’all. This episode is a bit of a mixed bag. I loved the man of steel line in this episode. The scene where Jonathan says to Clark that every day that you are in our lives you save us. The apartment scene was a little creepy. Loved the Chole and Lex scenes. It was interesting to learn more about Dr. Tang and that she actually cares. No Lionel in this episode. I was glad to see Pete quickly in this episode. Jonathan’s doctor was so calm during his surgery considering there was a bomb threat going on. When Martha says to Jonathan that you will be there when Clark flys away. Jonathan is there, but it is spirit. Love the Sheriff Adams scenes. Love y’all

You got to be a Superman and comic book fan to enjoy a show like this but the only important thing in this episode was so they can progress the plot involving experiments with Clark's blood which is a big thing in the comics. It's like having the blood of a God. Another thing is the small town, freaky stuff happening trope that was overly popular doing the show's time period

For some reason I personally did like this episode. Mostly because of the finding about the serum and its relation to Clark's blood. That's what the whole 3rd series is about and in this episode that is discovered. A key episode to understand the whole 3 season of Smallville. Thanks guys. Cheers.

Oh my goodness, these episodes where Johnathan has these heart problems, the first heart attack, the operation and when unfortunately he leaves Clark, now, 20 years after the first time I saw them, they hit straight at the heart, having lost my dad last June. Emotions are amplified exponentially. John Schneider is gorgeous as Johnathan Kent

Im currently rewatching the show, and I thought it was odd that when clark disposed of the bomb, they showed the surgeon and his staff operating on Jonathan and they feel the building shake and hear the explosion, but they just look around like and ask if everyone is good to keep going. In December 2002, my dad went into the hospital on the urging of myself and my mom because he felt...wrong...after straining too hard in the bathroom. By the next morning, they still weren't home. Got a call from my mom saying my dad was going into surgery. Turns out he was having an aortic dissection (same thing that would kill John Ritter a year later). My mom insisted I not come in to sit with her or anything, just stay home, stay calm and pray. He actually did survive it after ten hours on the table. (The doctors were about to send him home after being unable to find anything conclusively wrong when a specialist in the field just happened to be passing by the room and overheard my dad talking about feeling oddly cold and other things, and knew what was happening). Apparently, at least at the time, only 10% of people who had dissections survived, and of those 10%, something like another 10% didn't make it another ten years. My dad did not beat those odds, dying in July of 2009. My mom was point blank told, "You just got your Christmas miracle." I only bring it up because it's not so odd for a mom to be like, "Go do something useful instead of sit here." Now, for me, that meant sitting at home playing through Metroid Fusion and trying really hard not to think about it, kind of internally praying for my dad the whole time. But I can easily see a situation in which a mom is like, "It does no one any good for you to sit here doing nothing like me. Your being here isn't going to help him survive, and you can pray anywhere. Go somewhere where you actually have some agency over the situation. It's what he would want."

I know it must be totally cringe watching some of these storylines, but we the fans loved them. I watched the show all the way through for the first time in like 2016-17 as a 30-something. Yeah, there were episodes where I could've made nachos with all the cheese, but there was always some redeeming quality about the episodes that kept the story moving forward. I understood that you guys were adapting characters and stories for this Smallville universe and that some things worked better than others. Personally, I love the later seasons with Lois and Metropolis where the mythos really starts to get elaborated on.

On the BTS information, I love it. I always like to know what into the making of movies, TV shows, and even specific scenes. As for the mundane details of what went wrong, how many takes were done, and who was late... I imagine many rookie actors and actresses get on set with certain hopes and expectations that are quickly shattered by the reality of filming a TV show. Better for them to know how hard and/or tedious the work is beforehand.

Wow, much relief for you guys to have a majority-bomb episode so you can unabashedly vent your pent-up frustration with the show's lazy/sloppy/filler episodes haha. Love that superspeed is always the ultimate fallback to save the day when nothing else is working, both in-universe and for the viewers :) Since that caller brought it up, I wouldn't mind knowing more how they do the superspeed effect where Clark is interacting with another person essentially frozen in the scene, like the kid with the bomb in mid-fall.

They were going for another hostage crisis episode (ala Jitters and Insurgence), but this one didn't live up to those standards. Mainly because Garrett wasn't sympathetic like Earl Jenkins was in Jitters or as evil as Pyne was in Insurgence. He was just annoying. Like his brother kept saying, a runt, LOL. Best part was John Schneider's acting. The guy just knows how to hit you in the feels.
@jerodast

As I recall, _John Q_ wasn't exactly critically acclaimed by critics either, funny they'd try a _Smallville_ remake anyway. I think audiences mostly go "so you do this insane dangerous plan but we're still supposed to sympathize with you at least a little because of your dying family member? Yeah no." Kinda cracks me up they barely even mention the kid after he gets blown away. "Ah well that whole family's dead, too bad!"
@Costas22

@@jerodast At first you feel bad for him, but when he shows up with the bomb and then orders the doctor to get Jonathan's liver because Clark "would still have a mother", all sympathy is gone out the window. Looking back now, and given what happens next week, they should have done a hostage crisis episode with Adam at the forefront. It would have meant more to the viewer.

I was in the middle of a sip of iced coffee when Tom said the line about not seeing Lex's hair move at all. I damn near choked and my laptop almost got a shower. We actually got some major info in this episode. We already knew that this mysterious serum could keep people alive, but we got three more pieces of the puzzle here. We found out that the people the serum works on are people with liver failure; we find out that the serum is made from Clark's blood; and that leads us to Lionel being behind it, because he's the one who had Clark's blood in the first place. So: Lionel is engineering a serum made from Clark's blood that will keep people with liver disease alive. I wonder if that could be significant? 🤔 Also, of course we never see Clark's classmates except in the episodes when they show up. When do we EVER see Clark in class or interacting with anyone other than Chloe and Pete in the Torch office?

I also liked Garrett Davis' character with how determined he was to save his brother. Even if he did go about it the wrong way at certain points, keeping the medical center hostage with a bomb. Thought the reunion with Vince in Clark's barn after his initial "resurrection" was very touching. Overall, it's admirable the loyalty he had for him. As he was his only family even.
